About the Author
Sergio Cariello was born in Brazil in 1964 and started drawing as soon as could hold a pencil. At the age of five, he already knew that he wanted to be a cartoonist. And so did everyone else–he drew on church bulletins, napkins, and every surface wtihin his reach. He currently resides in Holiday, Florida.

Sergio has worked for Marvel Comics and DC Comics. He attended the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art as well as the Word of Life Bible Institute in upstate New York.

In February, 2006, he was contacted by David C. Cook to gauge his interest in a new project; completely re-illustrating Cook’s classic Picture Bible. What David C. Cook couldn’t know is that Sergio had grown up in Brazil with a Portuguese translation of that very same Picture Bible. He was reading the Picture Bible before he learned to ride a bike! Even though he knew as a kid that he wanted to be a comic artist, he never would have dreamed that he would one day get to work on the Picture Bible itself!

Wonderful book September 20, 2004
By Melanie
Format:HardcoverThis book focuses on being thankful for all things in life–from the smallest of things (the green grass, noses, giggles and many more) to the more important things in life (Mommy and Daddy and families). Prayers are very short and rhyme. Prayers about behaviors are included in this book such as a couple about being sorry for acting bad and learning to share. The book is small–perfect for tiny hands. This has been one of my very favorite books. I will buy this book for all new moms in the future. I definitely recommend this book and hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

I love the rhythm of the rhymes June 9, 2008
By JLS
Format:HardcoverI read these prayers to my infant over and over again. I would randomly choose different ones and seemed to always find something new. Now, my 18 month old will sit and flip the pages for 20-30 minutes at a time. Now, she loves all books so this is not unique to this book but I really love this book!

Very nice collection November 5, 2009
By Laura
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified PurchaseThis book has a large variety of prayers for all occasions. It’s nice and small, but has large text so it’s easy for little ones learning to read. The prayers are illustrated with appropriate and easy to depict images. I definitely prefer this book to the “Baby’s First Bible” by the same author. It would make a very nice gift for a toddler or preschooler for Christmas, Easter, or other religious holiday.

When a charming polar bear cub climbs into bed one night, she asks her mama a very important question–one that little “human cubs” often wonder about too: “Where did I come from?”

As Mama Bear tucks her young cub under the quilts, she gently, tenderly, and reassuringly communicates the message loving parents everywhere (bears and non-bears alike) want their little ones to hear: “We wanted you very, very much, and we are so very glad because…”God gave us you.”

Perfect for bedtime, naptime, storytime, or anytime, God Gave Us You provides a valuable opportunity to build children’s self-esteem every day and assure each one that he or she truly is a welcomed, precious, and treasured gift from above.

Beautiful story! February 26, 2002
By A. Stephens
Format:HardcoverThis book is a beautiful way of explaining where baby comes from without giving an adult answer. The simple message that your child was a gift from God sums it up, and in a sweet story. The illustrations are soothing, and the story is a good bedtime read.

Where do babies come from? May 15, 2001
By Jacki Whipple
Format:HardcoverFROM GOD… of course!!! This book is just perfect… it is a very cute story of how a baby gets from heaven to the family… a small child (polar bear) is asking her mama where she came from and the reply is “God gave us you”… this goes from conception to birth without all the messy details that little ones just won’t get, and You probably aren’t ready to give… but it will apease the child for quite some time… also, the illustrations are just adorable…

A devotional my kids ASK me to read each night February 3, 2009
By Sam & Julia’s mom
Format:HardcoverIf you want your children to connect their daily lives to Biblical principals in language your preschooler will understand, then this is the book for you. The author, a speaker and writer for MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) grabbed my son’s attention from the first sentence. The beauty of the short, but sweet devotions is that they are interactive. Simple questions get right to the heart of the day’s story and offer a chance for your child to share their feelings.

Here’s an example from December 27th’s devotional titled, “Win or Lose”

“Parker and Jack are having a snowball fight. Each boy hopes he will win! Do you like to win when you play games? Everyone likes to win. But when you play games, everyone loses now and then. Did you know there is something you can never lose? You can never loes God’s love. No matter who may be against you. God will always be on your side.”

Notice that this is a Winter story? I’ve found that the more relevant the situation the more my son get’s out of our devotional time. The day about “Working for Fun” caught his attention since he loves to bake cookies:

“Kaitlyn, Jack and Parker are making Christmas cookies. It will take a lot of work. But when the cookies are done, they will get a reward – they’ll have cookies to eat together! The Bible says that hard work often brings happy rewards. When the kids eat their cookies, do you think they will be happy they worked so hard?”

Seeds are being planted in my son and that makes me one happy Mama! But what about actual scripture verses, you ask? Not to worry! At the bottom of each page is a Bible verse and a prayer. The prayers rhymes, which I love. I have my son repeat every few words after me.

“Lord, when there’s work that needs to be done, help me remember that work can be fun. (December 18th’s Working for Fun devotional)”

Devotions written as if Jesus is speaking directly to a child’s heart.

Based on her original Jesus Calling, this version has been adapted in a language and fashion that kids and tweens can relate to their everyday lives.

After many years of writing in her prayer journal, missionary Sarah Young decided to listen to God with pen in hand, writing down what she believed He was saying to her through Scripture. Others were blessed as she shared her writings, until people all over the world were using her devotionals. They are written from Jesus’ point of view, thus the title Jesus Calling. It is Sarah’s fervent prayer that our Savior may bless readers, and now young readers, with His presence and His peace in ever deeper measure.

Good material, Strange Presentation… October 19, 2010
By Lorrie Miller
Format:HardcoverThis devotional book for kids is filled with a year’s worth of devotions–one each day! They are dated with the day of the year, but not the day of the week–so it can be used year after year (a great thing, in my opinion because God speaks to us in new ways from the same passage, many times!)

The devotions contain a short scripture printed at the top and a one page message taken from the theme verse. Scripture references follow for further study–a great thing for older children, especially! I used the devotional book with my own four children and found the short verse and message appropriate for the kids aged five through ten (my three year old’s attention span was much too short!) I, as an adult, also really appreciated the messages and often found God speaking to my heart through them!

The one thing I disliked about this book is that it is written from the first person–as if Jesus himself is speaking the words in the devotional thought. This was really confusing for my kids, who kept asking if Jesus wrote this or said this. It was difficult to explain that it was a woman who wrote it from the perspective of Jesus. I ended up changing it to read from the third person point of view instead and this seemed to be much better understood (and I felt more comfortable with it, too, since they really are not the words of Jesus!)

Overall, I enjoyed this book that Booksneeze sent to me for free to review!

Refreshing Reminders of Encouragement December 22, 2010
By Andrea VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What’s this?)This is a book of 365 devotions, one for each day of the year. Each devotion is wonderful – they deal with things such as trusting God, not people-pleasing, knowing you’re good enough, being thankful, God’s comfort, God’s promises, spending time with God, just to name a few.

This book is wonderful, because of all the negative impact and discouragement we all get in the world, we need to be reminded Who loves us and keeps us taken care of. There are Bible verses to back up each devotion.

Even though this book says “for kids”, I feel that adults can also benefit from it. Even adults need encouragement, sometimes even more so than kids. Adults are the ones who have to worry about certain things that kids don’t. And the way a lot of “adult” inpirational books are written, a lot of adults don’t have the time or energy to read them. But this one is written in such a way that does not require a lot of time or energy. And, I don’t think it is written all that “kiddy”. An adult (or a kid) can read it at their leisure, take as many or as few “days” each day. Even if you only read one “day” a day, it will only take you a year to read the book, and get a lot of encouragement along the way, being reminded that God loves you, and you don’t have to worry about anything but Him.

I love this whole book, and I could actually say that all the “days” are my favorites. But one “day” in particular that I consider one of my favorites, is September 7: “I Set You Free”, in which we are encouraged to free ourselves from the guilt of our past mistakes/sins.

In this time of discouragement and evil, this book is refreshing and encouraging, regardless of your age. Kids and adults, I highly recommend this book.

A Good Place to Start September 30, 2010
By John A. Bird
Format:HardcoverThe habit of spending time with the Lord on a daily basis cannot be formed too early. For children who need a good place to start, Tama Fortner’s adaptation of Sarah Young’s Jesus Calling may be the perfect book.

Jesus Calling is a 365 day devotional for kids. Each devotion begins with a verse followed by commentary written in first person, as if Jesus were speaking directly to the child:

“Talk to Me about your struggles, about the times when you feel that you just aren’t good enough. Little by little, I will take those struggles and turn them to strengths.”

Each devotion also includes suggested Scripture passages for further reading.

Young’s writings are comforting, full of practical help, and promote worship. Jesus is often presented as a friend–“I am your best Friend–pour out your heart to Me,”–but He is also presented as the Sovereign King. This adaptation by Tama Fortner strikes the perfect balance for children.

Jesus Calling is probably most suitable for children between the ages of 6 and 12. Older children will also benefit from it, but it may be too advanced for younger children. We have started using it during our family devotional time. It makes a great addition.

I received a complimentary copy of this book through the Thomas Nelson Booksneeze program.

Editorial Reviews
Review
‘The Jesus Storybook Bible is unlike any other storybook. True, that’s to be expected when you combine the mesmerizing illustrations of Jago and the award-winning writing of Sally Lloyd-Jones, a Brit with an uncanny knack for storytelling. Not only is each story as vividly illustrated as it is portrayed, but also each tale is telling one Big Story—the Story of Jesus. Even the Old Testament stories of ‘The young hero and the horrible giant’ and ‘Daniel and the scary sleepover’ come full circle to Jesus, the greatest Hero, King, Lover and Rescuer the world has ever known. — More to Life Magazine

(More to Life Magazine )

”The Jesus Storybook Bible: Every Story Whispers His Name’ disproves the adage that you can’t judge a book by its cover. Jago’s award-winning cover art is a foretaste of the whimsically insightful and richly colored drawings that await you on every one of the book’s 351 pages. The illustrations alone are worth the price of the book….Jago the illustrator, and Sally Lloyd-Jones the author, are a good pair. She brings the same creativity and sense of humor to her telling of the Bible’s stories….But Lloyd-Jones’s writing isn’t cutesy. She has a grasp of the profound. How does one explain to a child the agony of Jesus in Gethsemane, and his prayer of surrender to his Father? Lloyd-Jones does it as well as any biblical commentator….The title and subtitle are even better than the book’s delightful illustrations and narrative — because they provide, in one deft stroke, the interpretive key that unlocks the meaning of the whole Bible. ‘The Jesus Storybook Bible’ says it all: The Scriptures are not merely a collection of stories designed to teach moral lessons. As Jesus explained to the men walking the road to Emmaus on Resurrection Sunday, the whole Bible is about Jesus. In the words of the subtitle, every story whispers his name….Lloyd-Jones manages to show again and again the presence of Christ in all the Old Testament Scriptures, and the presence of the Old Testament Scriptures in the life of Christ.’ — Christianity Today

(Christianity Today )

The Jesus Storybook Bible is, in my opinion, one of the best resources available to help both children and adults see the Jesus-centered story line of the Bible. Tullian Tchividjian , Senior Pastor of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church — PCA, Fort Lauderdale, FL.

(PCA, Fort Lauderdale, FL. )

The quality and originality of this retelling of the Bible is impressive. Difficult concepts for children are clearly explained within the context of their stories. The text blends perfectly with the strong color and texture of the illustrations, which are original and lively and a million miles from ‘traditional’. The book, enhanced by the audio retelling will appeal to all children, not just those from a Christian background. — School Library Journal UK

‘I would urge not just families with young children to get this book, but every Christian–from pew warmers, to ministry leaders, seminarians and even theologians! Sally Lloyd-Jones has captured the heart of what it means to find Christ in all the scriptures, and has made clear even to little children that all God’s revelation has been about Jesus from the beginning–a truth not all that commonly recognized even among the very learned.’ — Dr. Tim Keller, Redeemer, NY, NY

Wow! and Wow! October 12, 2009
By Elyse Fitzpatrick
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified PurchaseAs a grandmother of six, I’m always on the search for edifying Christ-centered material, which is why I bought the Jesus Storybook Bible for my little darlings…Then I heard David Suchet’s reading of it and this wonderful book, which had already earned a “Wow!” from me got another really big “Wow!”…and so, it’s a good thing that I can order with one-click because I ordered copies for the kids (again!) and for my pal the preschool teacher and for…and for…
Really, Suchet’s readings made these stories spring to life and I’ve put them on my MP3 player and listen in the grocery store and at night when I can’t sleep and when I’m on the airplane and need to be reminded of God’s great love for me in Christ Jesus, my Rescuer.
You really must get this — even if you don’t have little ones. The child He calls you as needs to hear the story again and again.

I love, love, love this children’s Bible! October 27, 2009
By Sam K.
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified PurchaseI got this last week and we’ve been listening to the stories in the car. Everyone is captivated! The car gets so quiet so we can all listen (adults and kids alike). The narrator did a wonderful job. I’ve given out well over a dozen copies of the Jesus Storybook Bible and now I will most definitely switch to buying and gifting the Deluxe Edition.

Best Children’s Bible Out there March 18, 2010
By Dana E. Ellis
Format:HardcoverThe Deluxe Edition is a complete package of the reading on CDs and a read-along book. And, since we’ve put the girls to bed and down for naps with books on CDs since they were old enough to hold the book, I knew this set would be right up their alley. I must admit that when I received the book, just before Christmas, I set Emma up with the book and CD’s and saved my reading with her for something that she couldn’t do on her own. However, when I picked the book up to review, I decided that it was something that we needed to read together.

It is a nice bonus that the reader is David Suchet, one of Great Britain’s most distinguished actors, best known for playing Agatha Christie’s super-sleuth, Hercule Poirot. Since Emma finds a British accent as one of the upmost pleasurable things in life (apparently all princesses have British accents), she was hooked upon hearing the first lines of the introduction..

Illustrated by award winning, Jago, the illustrations are whimsical interpretations that serve to help bring the stories alive. While I know that illustrations are an important part of wrapping children into a book, personally, I am typically drawn to the words without paying much attention to the illustrations. However, Jago’s illustrations are so truly captivating and compliment the story so well, that I found myself reading the story through the pictures before I even began reading the words. I also found myself flipping back through to admire his artwork (something I do very rarely).

Those elements alone are worth the cost of the book. But, most surprisingly, I found the most beautiful description of the way that I want my children to view the Bible, right within the first pages of the book.

It’s taken all of my will power not to write the whole introduction right here and now. But, please allow me to share just a couple of pieces in which Sally Lloyd-Jones seemed to have looked straight into my heart and somehow put the passion that I have for my children to know God as a loving and compassionate father into words that I had not yet found.

Sally Lloyd-Jones writes:
“The Bible isn’t mainly about you and what you should be doing. It’s about God and what he has done.”

“Now, some people think the Bible is a book of rules, telling you what you should and shouldn’t do. The Bible certainly does have some rules in it. They show you how life works best. But the Bible isn’t mainly about you and what you should be doing. It’s about God and what he has done.

Other people think the Bible is a book of heroes, showing you people you should copy. The Bible does have some heroes in it, but (as you’ll soon find out) most of the people in the Bible aren’t heroes at all. They make some big mistakes (sometimes on purpose), they get afraid and run away. At times, they’re downright mean.

No, the Bible isn’t a book of rules, or a book of heroes. The Bible is most of all a Story. It’s an adventure story about a young Hero who comes from a far country to win back his lost treasure. It’s a love story about a brave Prince who leaves his palace, his throne-everything-to rescues the ones he loves. It’s like the most wonderful of fairy tales that has come true in real life”.

I completely agree with Dr. Tim Keller’s endorsement of the book below:

“I would urge not just families with young children to get this book, but every Christian–from pew warmers, to ministry leaders, seminarians and even theologians! Sally Lloyd-Jones has captured the heart of what it means to find Christ in all the scriptures, and has made clear even to little children that all God’s revelation has been about Jesus from the beginning–a truth not all that commonly recognized even among the very learned.” — Dr. Tim Keller, Redeemer, NY, NY

This review is from: 100 Top Picks for Homeschool Curriculum: Choosing the Right Curriculum and Approach for Your Child’s Learning Style (Paperback)

I’ve read a lot of homeschooling books in planning for my children’s education and I learned something from each one, whether I liked the book or not! This book, however, is a planner’s dream! It truly has you plan from the bottom up, applying thought to aspects of homeschooling that I had not previously considered.
Cathy Duffy begins by having you come up with your own philosophy of education. As she puts it, “If there were no laws requiring you to educate your child, what would you want them to learn anyway?” Wow! That question really gets to the heart of the matter for most people choosing to homeschool. Then, she has you consider your thoughts about how you want to teach and run your school (teach different ages together, work directly with your children or have them work independently, real books vs. textbooks, field trips, adhering to a schedule or remaining flexible, etc.). She has you take a sort of quiz about your preferred approaches to learning that shows which styles might appeal to you most. After leaning so heavily toward Charlotte Mason after all my reading, I was somewhat surprised to find that I have an equally high regard for unit studies and–gasp!–unschooling (a “curriculum” choice that petrifies me a bit)! She describes the various homeschooling methods (traditional, Charlotte Mason, classical, unit study, unschooling, independent study, eclectic, and umbrella programs). Then, she asks you to consider your confidence/experience level, time available to teach, finances, and religious beliefs. In addition, one of the most important differences about this book is that it addresses your teaching style and your child’s learning style. This is such an important consideration when deciding what curriculum to choose. I’m sad to admit that I’ve been so gleefully planning what I want them to learn and what I think they’ll enjoy that I’ve given very little SERIOUS thought to their perspective about things. Not anymore…
Finally, the discussion of her top 100 picks begins. The curriculum choices are introduced with a chart. The format helps you pick resources that are aligned with what you now know are your homeschooling preferences. Each curriculum is ranked for the following criteria: (1) Multi-sensory/hands-on (2)structure/rules-oriented (3) logical/analytical learners (4) social activity (5) amount of parent instruction (6) independent study vs. one-on-one (7) amount of writing (8) prep time (9) grade level specific vs. multi-level (10) ease of use for teacher (11) necessity for teacher’s manual (12) supportive of Charlotte Mason’s philosophy (13) supportive of classical education (14) religious affiliations. Using the chart, it was easy to look for a unit study or Charlotte Mason approach that would accomodate my Wiggly Willy and my Sociable Sue who work at different grade levels.
Some critics of the book feel that the author leans too heavily on Christian resources so I actually did a count for those interested. Of her 100 picks, there were 15 Catholic choices, 41 Protestant choices, and 54 were religiously neutral. (They don’t add up to 100 because some would work for both Protestants and Catholics, some neutrals could add religious supplements, etc.) If you consider that probably AT LEAST 50% of homeschoolers are keeping their children at home so they can offer religious instruction, I don’t think those numbers are in any way out of balance.
If you are looking for an umbrella curriculum (one that covers all the subjects) you should know that she really goes in depth into only two, Calvert School (neutral) and Sonlight (Protestant). However, some of the unit studies she discusses could be used as a full program with a few additional choices for neglected subjects. (Only one of the seven unit study programs, Five in a Row, is religiously neutral.) If an umbrella curriculum is what you’re looking for, you would be better off requesting catalogs and information from companies offering that service rather than buying this book. Otherwise, the curriculum choices included in this book fall under the following categories: (1) phonics/reading/literature (2) math (3) grammar and composition (4) spelling and vocabulary (5) history/social science (6) science (7) unit studies (8) foreign language (9) miscellaneous.
Her picks definitely cover a wide range of methodology. Some will appeal to you and some won’t. What I find is that in researching something that is appealing (usually on Amazon), I invariably follow link after link until I wind up reading so many reviews that I more fully understand the pros and cons of each curriculum choice I make. What a wonderful thing! I would rank this book with the top four homeschooling books I have read (Rebecca Rupp’s “Home Learning Year by Year,” Charlotte Mason’s “Original Homeschooling Series,” and Karen Andreola’s “A Charlotte Mason Companion”).
