Near-death experiences, or NDEs, are controversial. Thousands of people have had them, but many in the scientific community have argued that they are impossible. Dr. Eben Alexander was one of those people.

A highly trained neurosurgeon who had operated on thousands of brains in the course of his career, Alexander knew that what people of faith call the “soul” is really a product of brain chemistry. NDEs, he would have been the first to explain, might feel real to the people having them, but in truth they are simply fantasies produced by brains under extreme stress.

Then came the day when Dr. Alexander’s own brain was attacked by an extremely rare illness. The part of the brain that controls thought and emotion—and in essence makes us human— shut down completely. For seven days Alexander lay in a hospital bed in a deep coma. Then, as his doctors weighed the possibility of stopping treatment, Alexander’s eyes popped open. He had come back.

Alexander’s recovery is by all accounts a medical miracle. But the real miracle of his story lies elsewhere. While his body lay in coma, Alexander journeyed beyond this world and encountered an angelic being who guided him into the deepest realms of super-physical existence. There he met, and spoke with, the Divine source of the universe itself.

This story sounds like the wild and wonderful imaginings of a skilled fantasy writer. But it is not fantasy. Before Alexander underwent his journey, he could not reconcile his knowledge of neuroscience with any belief in heaven, God, or the soul. That difficulty with belief created an empty space that no professional triumph could erase. Today he is a doctor who believes that true health can be achieved only when we realize that God and the soul are real and that death is not the end of personal existence but only a transition.

This story would be remarkable no matter who it happened to. That it happened to Dr. Alexander makes it revolutionary. No scientist or person of faith will be able to ignore it. Reading it will change your life.

Take Words With You” is a comprehensive compilation of approximately 1500 promises and Scripture prayers (ESV) to provide tangible traction to our prayers. It is intended to fortify our prayers with God’s Word and to build a strong faith in God in the one praying. It is also intended to better align the believers praying with the will of God, which God has promised to answer:

This is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. (1 John 5:14)

God loves to be quoted. It’s possible to know your Bible but then leave it behind when you go to pray. But isn’t it so much better to “Take Words With You” to infuse your prayers with the words of Scripture? If that’s the desire of your heart, this book will be a valuable tool.
-Joshua Harris, Senior Pastor, Covenant Life Church

You know you’re praying in the will of God when you’re praying the Word of God. This manual is packed full of Scripture promises, affirmations and blessings. It’s a well-organized and invaluable resource for personal, corporate, and intercessory prayer. If you want to ignite your prayer life, Take Words with You. I’ll definitely be taking a copy with me!
-Mary A. Kassian, Professor of Women’s Studies, Southern Seminary

There are many books–hundreds of them–that teach Christians how to pray. Take Words With You teaches Christians what to pray. The words of God, his promises to us, must be the fuel that powers our prayer. Use this book, pray the promises it contains, and let your prayers be transformed by the Word of God.
-Tim Challies, Blogger at

This book is a much-needed tool. You will find your prayer life nourished if you allow yourself to be gripped by the Scriptures that are contained within it. You need this book. Your family needs to use this book. Your church needs you to pray like this. I need this book.
-Adrian Warnock, Blogger at

It is not common today to hear praying filled with and shaped by Scripture and that’s why I am excited about “Take Words With You.” I am grateful for this useful tool and plan to put a copy in the hands of our staff, Elders, Deacons and small group leaders.
-John Mahaffey, Lead Pastor West Highland Baptist Church, Founding council member of The Gospel Coalition

I already have some good books on prayer; I don’t have any that get me praying more than this one. Some books sit on the shelf. This one’s going to sit on my desk for daily use. I plan on using it for years.

From nail biting to cell phone addiction, procrastination to overspending, bad habits seem to outnumber the good ones. Unfortunately, we pay a price for bad habits that outweighs the immediate gratification that they bring.

In this book, Joyce Meyer starts by examining the nature of habits. The first habit – and most important one to have – is the God Habit. By making it a habit to start your day by reading the Bible and communing with God, asking for His help in your efforts and His strength and sustenance, the stage is set for overcoming the habits you want to break and establishing new ones in their place.

She then explores how to break bad habits by examining the destructive negative behavior patterns.

The author moves on to discuss fourteen good habits and devotes a chapter to each. By the end of the chapter, the reader has a specific roadmap to follow until the behavior has become automatic (the definition of a habit). It’s like following a GPS to get you to a new place. After traveling the same route several times, the GPS isn’t needed for you to find your destination. The ‘habit’ of following the right route is ingrained.

Among the habits discussed are:
The God Habit
The Habit of Being Decisive
The Health Habit
The Happy Habit
The Habit of Faith
The Habit of Excellence
The Habit of Being Responsible
The Generosity Habit
The Hurry Habit
The Discipline Habit
The Confidence Habit

All eyes are on the Middle East. Israel has successfully launched a first strike on Iran, taking out all of their nuclear sites and six of their nuclear warheads—and causing The Twelfth Imam to order a full-scale retaliation. US President William Jackson threatens to support a UN Security Council resolution condemning the Jewish State for unprovoked and unwarranted acts of aggression.

Meanwhile, CIA operative David Shirazi has infiltrated the Iranian regime and intercepted information indicating that two Iranian nuclear warheads survived the attack and have been moved to a secure and undisclosed location. In danger not only from the ongoing missile strikes on Iran but also from the increasingly hostile and suspicious governments of multiple countries, David and his team are in a race against time to find the remaining nuclear warheads before disaster strikes.

Editorial Reviews
Joel is a stalwart and faithful friend of Isreal and a great writer. He understands the grave dangers posed by Iran and Syria, and he’s been a bold and courageous voice for true peace and security in the Middle East. If you haven’t read his works yet, I hope you will” – Danny Ayalon, Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister

“Joel C. Rosenberg is one of the most knowledgable people writing about the Middle East, he has a clear understanding of what is going on in today’s Iran and Syria and the grave threat these two countries post to the rest of the world.” – Reza Kahlili, former CIA operative in Iran and bestselling author of A Time to Betray: The Astonishing Double Life of a CIA Agent Inside the Revolutionary Guards of Iran.

“Joel Rosenberg is unsurpassed as the writer of fiction thrillers, they have a ring of truth that eerily echoes the news headlines. Sometimes I have to remind myself to breathe as I read one of his novels, because I find myself holding my breath in suspense as I turn the pages.”–Anne Graham Lotz, speaker and bestselling author of Just Give Me Jesus

Damascus Countdown is fantastic – intense action, blistering pace, and eerie how close it is to real events in the Mideast, espeically with Iran so close to the Bomb and Syria melting down! Rosenberg always keeps me riveted.- Rush Limbaugh, Radio Host

Damascus Countdown will be the most chilling, pulse-pounding thriller you read this year. Joel is a great writer and spot on, he paints an eerie, terrifying, page-turning picture of a worst-case scenario coming to pass. You have to read this book, and then pray it never happens.- Former Senator Rick Santorum, author of American Patriots: Answering the Call to Freedom

In Think Big, which emanates from the last chapter of his best-selling Gifted Hands, Dr. Ben Carson prescribes his personal formula for success. And who could better advise than one who transformed his own life from that of being a ghetto kid with problems in school to becoming the most celebrated pediatric neurosurgeon in the world? With an acrostic, Dr. Carson spells out his philosophy of living: T -Talents/time: Recognize as gifts from God H -Hope for good things and be honest I -insight from people and good books N -Be nice to all people K -Knowledge: Recognize as they key to living B -Books: Read them actively I -In-depth learning skills: Develop them G -God: Never get too big for Him — Think Big does not offer pat answers, or promise a life of ease, but it does show how a person should view problems, evaluate them, react to them, and eventually overcome them. The philosophy in Think Big can be applied by all individuals to their own lives and help them to make the most of the gifts that God has given them.

From the Back Cover
This book is for you if your life is a series of shattered dreams. This book is for you if you have no dreams at all. It’s for you if you’ve bought the lie that you’ll never amount to anything. That’s not true. Your life is BIG—far bigger than you’ve imagined. Inside these pages lie the keys to recognizing the full potential of your life. You won’t necessarily become a millionaire (though you might), but you will attain a life that is rewarding, significant, and more fruitful than you ever thought possible. The author of this book knows about hardship. Ben Carson grew up in inner-city Detroit. His mother was illiterate. His father had left the family. His grade-school classmates considered Ben stupid. He struggled with a violent temper. In every respect, Ben’s harsh circumstances seemed only to point to a harsher future and a bad end. But that’s not what happened. By applying the principles in this book, Ben rose from his tough life to one of amazing accomplishments and international renown. He learned that he had potential, he learned how to unleash it, and he did. You can too. Put the principles in this book in motion. Things won’t change overnight, but they will change. You can transform your life into one you’ll love, bigger than you’ve ever dreamed.

5.0 out of 5 stars A captivating read, January 30, 2012

This review is from: A Sweethaven Summer
From the very first chapter, this book had me captivated. I wanted to know more about these girls, their summers together, and why they drifted apart. The characters were well developed, and their stories were both heartbreaking and beautiful. I love the setting of a small, beach town, and I think we all long to stay in a place like that to escape the craziness of life.

Courtney has a great way of capturing your heart and wanting to experience the relationships that these girls had. A Sweethaven Summer will take you back to memories of times when all that mattered was being with the people you cared about. She’ll also remind you that unconditional friendships are something to be treasured.

This was a quick read, and a heartwarming story. I can’t wait for the second book in the series! I would highly recommend this book!

Is it possible…

That there exists an ancient mystery that holds the secret of America’s future?
That this mystery lies behind everything from 9/11 to the collapse of the global economy?
That ancient harbingers of judgment are now manifesting in America?
That God is sending America a prophetic message of what is yet to come?

Before its end as a nation, there appeared in ancient Israel nine specific warnings and omens of national destruction – These same nine Harbingers are now manifesting in America with profound ramifications for America’s future and end-time prophecy.

Hidden in an ancient biblical prophecy from Isaiah, the mysteries revealed in The Harbinger are so precise that they foretell recent American events down to the exact days… the 3,000-year-old mystery that revealed the exact date of the stock market collapse of 2008… the ancient prophecy that was proclaimed from the floor of the US Senate and then came true…and more. The revelations are so specific that even the most hardened skeptic will find it hard to put down. Though it sounds like the plot of a Hollywood thriller – IT’S REAL.

The prophetic mysteries are factual but revealed through a riveting narrative the reader will find hard to put down. The Harbinger opens with the appearance of a man burdened with a message he has received from a mysterious figure called The Prophet. The Prophet has given him nine seals, each containing a message about America s future. As he tells of his encounters with the Prophet, from a skyscraper in New York City, to a rural mountaintop, to Capitol Hill, to Ground Zero, the mystery behind each seal is revealed. As the story unfolds, each revelation becomes another piece in a larger and larger puzzle, the ramifications of which are, even now, altering the course of America and the world.

Love is His nature; Justice is His necessity — We have been warned January 4, 2012
By L. Weeks
Format:PaperbackFull disclosure – I’ve been a member and/or attending Beth Israel under Jonathan Cahn’s leadership for a decade. I have never seen or read anyone that can unpack information with the facility he does. Having been familiar with much of the information and facts contained in The Harbinger through Rabbi Cahn’s sermons over the years, I am still blown away by the amount of seemingly new information in this book as well as the method and order of its revealing. He brilliantly unfolds this message that needs to be (and is) as resoundingly clear as can be: God is warning this country to turn back to Him. As anyone with ears to hear and eyes to see can tell, we are living in perilous times. This narrative and the true, checkable facts it is built around demonstrate that even in chaos, there is order … and that nothing happens (or will happen) apart from God’s allowance. He is in control.

If you doubt His being in control – or if you doubt the parallels between God’s dealings with ancient Israel and the events in America since and including 9/11, reading The Harbinger with an open mind will change that. Reading it with an open heart might just change your life.

It’s time to wake up America! November 7, 2011
By Bigcheese
Format:Kindle Edition”The Harbinger” by Jonathan Cahn was written for a time such as this, mesmerizing and fascinating from beginning to end. In light of current events, this book is an eye opener for every American. The book is presented in a narrative fashion and uses scripture to demonstrate the ties between the destruction of ancient Israel and America. Anyone searching for answers in the midst of the chaos, unrest and fear that is prevalent in America today will find “The Harbinger” provides a glimmer of hope. Cahn offers these words from scripture “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14. This book surely is a wake up call for Americans to get on their knees and reclaim this great nation before it’s too late.

Book Description
Publication Date:July 4, 2012
The summer of 2012 has become the Summer of 43—as in the summer of R.A. Dickey, the 37-year-old knuckleball pitcher who wears Number 43 on the mound for the New York Mets.

As his knuckleballs flutter and drop through the strike zone, befuddling batters and producing a 12–1 record by the All Star break, Dickey has become one of the greatest feel-good stories of baseball history: the man who found redemption, after years of adversity, by mastering one of the strangest and most difficult pitches in the game.

But it’s not just his own redemption that R.A. Dickey has discovered. After the Days of Steroids—the era when baseball went brazen mad and lost itself in a noonday sin—America’s game has needed a new narrative. Baseball has been desperate for a better storyline, a new shaping tale. Baseball has needed, for those who love the game, a way to signal its own redemption and its return to the hearts of baseball fans.

A little faith in God—and thereby, a little faith in himself—coupled with years of work, and R.A. Dickey’s surrender to the mysteries of the knuckleball has given the man another chance at the greatness that eluded him early in his career. Given baseball itself another chance, for that matter, and promised us all that second chances really do come around in this life.

In “The Summer of 43,” the widely published essayist and poet Joseph Bottum takes up this story with verve and skill. The bestselling author of “The Gospel According to Tim” and “The Christmas Plains,” he is, as the essayist Andrew Ferguson has noted “one of America’s most gifted writers, with a perfect ear and a matchless style.” And in his account of R.A. Dickey, Bottum uncovers both the tragedy and the comedy of baseball—and the joy of a story like R.A. Dickey’s.

Editorial Reviews Review
Having penned the popular Kindle Single The Gospel According to Tim (Tebow), Joseph Bottum knows his way around the nexus of faith and sports. In The Summer of 43, he would have us believe that baseball is a moral game. Who knew? At one end of the spectrum, I suppose, are those comedians who insist that performance-enhancing drugs should be mandatory for all athletes, and at the other, there’s Bottum’s taxonomical assignment of various pitches into “moral categories.” All of which brings us to one R.A. Dickey (the number 43 of the title), whose increasingly unhittable knuckleball has taken Major League Baseball circa 2012 by storm, providing–Bottum argues–the long-awaited antidote to a decade-plus doping story that brought baseball all the way to Congress. Nevertheless, Bottum’s passionate essay is more than a purist’s screed on “steroids, the sin against which R.A. Dickey is throwing his knuckleball this year.” It’s also a lofty testament to the dizzying emotional and metaphorical heights that some fans still find in the game. –Jason Kirk

Grand slam July 6, 2012
By Dr. Syntax
Format:Kindle EditionThis is a wonderfully descriptive, authoritative picture of the mysteries of the knuckleball and the resurgence of #43’s career after concentrating on regularly hurling that flabbergasting pitch. A fascinating story very well told.

Art of Baseball July 6, 2012
By Denise L. Wiktor
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified PurchaseI love baseball, have loved it since I was young and would hang with my father as he puttered and listened to baseball. He would watch golf on TV but never baseball, it had to be listened to. Of course that was a time when baseball commentary was king. Joseph Bottum’s essay is more for the fan of the ART of baseball, not the mere statistician. So for me the description of the Miamiacs and their stadium I loved. It is also about the paid of the steroid scandals and how it has made us doubt who is playing. Only a pitcher, it seems to me, can avoid that and we get a animated description of how the knuckle ball and one pitcher can give us faith in the game again, to redeem it.

I do take one exception, in the part where he describes “Before 1998, only fifteen players over the previous hundred years of baseball had managed 500 home runs in a career.” he fails to mention the one bone of contention I do have with statistics, which there are more games in a season that there used to be so the record (with or without drugs) has more of an opportunity to be broken.

I enjoyed the essay and I think that anyone who likes the sport of baseball, the art of baseball will enjoy it too with the colorful and descriptive passages, which, by his own admission, meander. The meandering gives context and emotion to the narrative. All for $1.99.

The intersection of faith and baseball in a compelling essay July 6, 2012
By Robert C. Ross TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified PurchaseJoseph Bottum has written a good review of his own essay, which appears for free on his Blog on the CatholicVote website:

“I’m not sure when the editors for the Kindle Singles elected me their go-to guy for any story about the intersection of sports and religion, but it’s fun to write on these topics: first Tebow and now Dickey. And the thesis is one I think I’m right to hold: ‘A fastball is a power pitch. A curveball is an artist’s pitch. And a knuckleball — ah, yes, a knuckleball is a pitch of faith.’

“Along the way, R.A. Dickey is showing us the 2012 redemption of baseball from the Days of Steroids: the era in which the game went brazen mad and lost itself in a noonday sin. If you haven’t been aware of Dickey’s story — and, even more, if you haven’t watched him pitch, throwing his fluttering knuckleball past the hitters of the National League — now’s the time to start. It’s like watching faith on the fly.”

After reflecting on his essay for 24 hours (and deleting my original ungenerous review), here is one explanation for why the editors made the choice of this essay:

First, Joseph Bottum is a wonderful writer, and this essay is as good as his earlier effort The Gospel According to Tim (Kindle Single) on the intersection between sports and religion. (For me, the baseball part of The Summer of 43 was stronger than the religion part, whereas in The Gospel According to Tim the faith part was stronger than the football part.)

Second, the baseball parts of the essay are absolutely superb. Bottum summarizes several of the major scandals that have so rocked baseball over the past several years, most dealing with drugs and the hypocrisy of owners and to a certain extent the players. He is absolutely brilliant describing the various basic pitches, especially the knuckleball, that most unpredictable of all pitches, and the one that has garnered some of the best quotations that exist in the long lore of baseball.

Bottum also writes a compelling summary of Dickey’s past career and makes a strong case for why and how Dickey’s faith has enabled him to grow from a marginal pitcher into, at the moment, one of the very best in baseball. And, he shows how fleeting that excellence may be, especially with a pitch that is so unpredictable, not only for the hitter or the catcher, but for the pitcher as well.

Fate always plays a part in baseball; as Bottum writes in this same blog entry: “Dickey was close to a disaster [in a game the Mets stole from the Phillies], giving up a career high of 11 hits and 5 runs in 7 innings. Not, in other words, the Dickey we’ve been seeing–who just had one of the best months of any pitcher in baseball history: 5-0 for June, with a 0.93 ERA and the first back-to-back one-hitters in 25 years. In the event, for the second time in three starts, his teammates’ heroics in the ninth brought a win for the Mets’ reliever and saved Dickey from recording what would have been his first loss since April 13.”

There is a great deal of interest here, not only for folks who may not know too much about baseball, but also for folks like me who have been a baseball fan for over 50 years.

PS: I’ve substantially revised this review, and have re-purchased the essay — it resides in my memory, like many other essays Bottum has written.

It is well worth following Bottum on his blog, and taking a look at some of his poetry. I’ve purchased a copy of his The Second Spring, which is a collection of twenty-four poems set to fairly simple music. For folks without tin ears, they probably are easy to sing, but for me, they are much more fun to recite aloud. Some of them are set in Appalachia, and these sound particularly good on my hikes in the Ramapos. R.

Book Description
Publication Date:December 19, 2011
American life can be excessive, to say the least. That’s what Jen Hatmaker had to admit after taking in hurricane victims who commented on the extravagance of her family’s upper middle class home. She once considered herself unmotivated by the lure of prosperity, but upon being called “rich” by an undeniably poor child, evidence to the contrary mounted, and a social experiment turned spiritual was born.

7 is the true story of how Jen (along with her husband and her children to varying degrees) took seven months, identified seven areas of excess, and made seven simple choices to fight back against the modern-day diseases of greed, materialism, and overindulgence.

Food. Clothes. Spending. Media. Possessions. Waste. Stress. They would spend thirty days on each topic, boiling it down to the number seven. Only eat seven foods, wear seven articles of clothing, and spend money in seven places. Eliminate use of seven media types, give away seven things each day for one month, adopt seven green habits, and observe “seven sacred pauses.” So, what’s the payoff from living a deeply reduced life? It’s the discovery of a greatly increased God—a call toward Christ-like simplicity and generosity that transcends social experiment to become a radically better existence.

Editorial Reviews
Publishers Weekly – The central principles of living a Christian life, like tithing, fasting, and prayer, might get short shrift from some people but not Hatmaker (A Modern Girl’s Guide to Bible Study). The wife of a pastor at Austin (Texas) New Church aims for a more saintly life by cutting back on possessions, food, stress, and other excesses with funny and lively writing that can get overly self-deprecating. Her goal is to convince the reader that a simpler life is a godlier one, which lends a sanctimonious element to some of the writing. Other parts are earnest and moving, such as the final chapter, in which the book drops snarky humor to offer sincere appreciation for prayer, even if the subject matter is divided between prayer and the couple’s adoption of two Ethiopian children. For Christians who desire to live out their New Year’s resolutions year round, this is worth reading.

About the Author
Jen Hatmaker and her family live in Austin, Texas, where the city motto is “Keep Austin Weird,” and they work hard to do their part. Jen’s eight previous books include Interrupted and A Modern Girl’s Guide to Bible Study. She and her husband planted Austin New Church in an economically and ethnically diverse, socially unique, urban area of the city in 2008. They are in the great- est adventure of their lives, (thrilled to find out where they have planted is known as the “church planters graveyard”) and have made some incredible new partnerships in ministry. They’ve seen their world turned upside down as they’ve considered what it means to ask God how to live and not just what to do. But it’s a good upside down, as part of that discovery will be the addition of two children from Ethiopia set to join the three they already have. Together they will keep Austin weird and seek to glorify God as they do.

A really important book written in a really good way January 5, 2012
By Christine Hoover
Format:PaperbackYou must read this book! Here’s what it’s about: Jen (the author) did an experiment in which each month for 7 months, she and sometimes her entire family fasted in an area she felt they were excessive in: media, stress, possessions, shopping, food, clothes, and waste. I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking that sounds all preachy and super-spiritual and hard and you don’t want to read it. Thankfully, it’s the complete opposite. It is laugh-out-loud hilarious, totally real-life, 100% empowering, and 0% guilt-inducing.

You must go immediately to purchase this book and devour it whole. Do not pass go, do not collect $200. Do not stop to brush your teeth or feed your children. While you’re out, buy Depends to wear because you will pee yourself while reading from laughing so hard.

Some other suggestions of how to read this book:
Keep a notepad handy while you’re reading to write down notes and thoughts because ideas and action points will come to you like nobody’s business.
Do not read this book right before you go to bed because you will not be able to sleep due to the millions of thoughts running around in your brain.
Read this book with your girlfriends.

“7” – Like drano for all the clutter in our lives! January 5, 2012
By Damon C. Ward
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified PurchaseJen Hatmaker’s “7” is like a voice screaming in the midst of chaos that is the American lifestyle. The message delivery of “7” is atypical of most Christian-based “self-help” or “as Christians we really should be doing X” type books. First of all, the author approaches each topic within 7 from an attitude of repentance and humility that comes across as completely genuine. I don’t know that I’d be willing to admit some of the things Jen does. Successes, struggles and failures are laid bare for the world to see, which is very refreshing. There is no condemnation or lofty attitudes from the author that she is better or superior to any average reader.

One of the key words I’ve seen after someone has read the book is “wrecked”. This is a great one-word summary of how deeply these topics should impact each reader. If you’re not spurred to some kind of deep self-reflection or action after reading this book, I believe there are only two reasons why – you live an extremely minimalist lifestyle or you live in extreme poverty. Jen humbly points out how these various areas of life have distracted the church from its purpose. We’ve stopped distinguishing ourselves, we’ve stopped being all we can and should be as God’s hands and feet on this planet.

The truths from God’s word and examples from Jen’s life are revealed in simple, humorous and refreshing ways. You’ll laugh, you’ll sob, your heart will break, you’ll repent and most importantly you’ll be ready to say “I’m in!”.

The main concern I had before reading this book was that it would be a book only for women. While there certainly were portions of the book I could not identify with as a male and even found myself rolling my eyes a few times, men NEED to read this book. There are far too many Christian men living life on the sidelines, and the message in this book will light a fire that’s been a slowly dwindling ember in so many!

An Unbelievable Intersection of Lives March 20, 2012
By Mary C. Findley
Format:Kindle EditionThis is the third contemporary romance I have read recently, and the second by a Christian writer. Normally I don’t read this genre because the stories tend to focus on the self-centered “sufferings” of a heroine who doesn’t have any real sufferings. I have been blessed, however, to find two out of three gems in the genre.
You know Maggie Montgomery has seen real trouble from the very beginning. But you also know she’s learned to “pray without ceasing” in the most down to earth sense. Don’t make the mistake of thinking this is “The Nanny” with tacked-on Christianity. This is no comedy. Grab your box of tissues and follow Maggie through her stunning discoveries and what people discover about her, themselves, and her God. Who becomes her only real friend? Someone who’s totally off-limits. Who does she teach to pray? Not just the sweet little four-year-old boy she cares for. Whose lives does she change? Almost the entire rest of the cast of the book.
I thought the scenes at church were a little strange. They never met a single church member. Didn’t even shake hands with the pastor or say his name. Some of the sermon illustrations were application rather than strictly correct interpretation, but the points made were easy to understand. The focus was on Maggie’s living faith, and that shined clear. Romantic tension seesaws through everything, but was a little repetitive in the way was portrayed sometimes.
The characters were well-rounded, even the secondary ones. Plenty of internal and external conflicts keep the reader going and guessing. It’s an excellent read with a resolution of so much more than just the impossible romance.

I Loved Deep in the Heart March 19, 2012
By Cindy
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified PurchaseWhat does forgiveness have to do with hurt, anger and scars from the past too ugly to be revealed? How can love wrap itself around grudges, secrets and the quest for monetary wealth until it’s the only thing that matters? Searching only for a job and a roof over her head, Maggie shows up at the door of the Ayers mansion alone, penniless and utterly dependent upon the mercy of the rich family too concerned about their own fortune to have compassion on such a thing as a human soul. How could they know that their lavish quest for worldly goods and social status is about to come crashing down around them at the selfless love and kindness of the lowly woman hired as their nanny?
Deep in the Heart is a gut-wrenching, tear-jerking story of forbidden yet undeniable romance between the one who has it all and the one who has nothing. And yet, which is which? Is it Keith, the handsome son of one of the richest men in Texas with racehorses to tend, a beautiful fiancée on his arm and a future of wealth and power at his fingertips? Or could it be Maggie, the girl with no money, no family, no home and yet possesses a heart of peace and fulfillment, brimming with love for others and for her God?
Once again, Staci reaches `deep in her heart’ to spill emotion onto the pages that pulls you into her story with a grasp that will not let go. Your heart will ache along with Maggie as she falls hopelessly in love with the man she can never have and along with Keith as he seeks to fill the void in his heart with things that can never satisfy. What twist of irony awaits Keith and Maggie that causes their pasts to collide with their futures in a way they never could have predicted?
Deep in the Heart is Staci Stallings at her finest. The memory of the anguish and joy poured out by her pen will remain in your heart long after the final page has been turned.

The Samurai were soldiers of feudal Japan who dedicated their lives entirely to their lords. In fact, the very title of samurai means “one who serves.” Legends of their skill, sacrifice, and service have been passed down for hundreds of years. As Christians, we are called to be both servants and soldiers of Christ. As this book demonstrates, there is much we can learn from the teachings and example of these legendary servant-warriors of Japan. We can respond to the call of our Lord, Jesus Christ, as Christian Samurai.

Unique, Sound, and Very Practical August 22, 2007
By B. S. Copeland
Format:Paperback”If one were to say in a word what the condition of being a samurai is, its basis lies in seriously devoting one’s body and soul to his master…”

This quote, taken from Hagakure: The Book of the Samurai, appears on the back cover of WCS. As the quote illustrates, the teachings of the samurai are extremely relevant for Christians, for their single purpose in life was to serve their master and those around them. As the author points our in the book’s introduction, the title “samurai” literally means “one who serves.” The relevance of such a philosophy is obvious for Christians. We are called to deny ourselves and to serve God and our neighbor. However, in our selfish, individualistic culture, the idea of servant hood is entirely foreign to us and we tend to minimize the emphasis on the selfless nature of such servant hood.

The value of this book is in its ability to show us what true servant hood is by examples of the writings of the samurai of old. Of course, we have the perfect example of servant hood in Jesus Christ. Unfortunately, it seems like we mythologize his selflessness because of the fact that Jesus is God. Its true that he is God, and that we can’t live up to his perfect display of sacrifice is undeniable. Nonetheless, we are called to live by his example and promised that the trials we face by imitating his self-denial will mature us to be more like him. I’m afraid that we Westerners have trouble living by Christ’s example because the mythological nature that we attach to his servant hood. What would help us is to see examples of people throughout history who lived by the philosophy of being servants who deny themselves on a daily basis to better serve their masters. God has provided us such examples in the samurai of the feudal period of Japan.

In the book, Paul Nowak deals with three main works written by the samurai and shows how their philosophy is practical to Christians. He also shows Scripture passages that parallel these teachings. Amazingly, many of the excerpts from the samurai works are basically rewordings of passages of Scripture. Quickly after I began reading the book I was absolutely amazed by the level of devotion that they aimed to live by. By no means am I more impressed with their example than I am by our Lord’s example. Rather, I was encouraged to see that these men actually displayed the self-denial and loyalty to their master that we are called to do. Keep in mind also, that the samurai were this committed to a fallen human. Our master is the perfect risen King who helps us by sending us his Spirit! How much better should our example of servant hood be? To me, it should be much better. Yet from the examples given in this book, we have a lot of work to do in order to surpass the pagan samurai in our devotion to our master.

After reading it, I have a much better sense of what service and self-denial is. More importantly, it has helped me see more clearly the example that Jesus set, and has encouraged me that I can do much more in imitating it. Also note that this is not one of those lame self-help books. It is thoroughly Christ-centered. It is also a very unique book. I’m pretty sure that it will be a while before I come across a book this unique in content, yet this sound in its message. I suggest this book to everyone but especially to people who are interested in Japanese culture, because it deals a lot with the writings of the legendary samurai who helped make the culture famous.

Holy Warriors October 25, 2007
By Labarum VINE™ VOICE
Format:PaperbackA lot of people will get nervous about a book that suggests Christians have something to learn from the Samurai about how to serve the Lord. After all, weren’t the Samauri pagans? And doesn’t all of this reek of the sort of syncretism that attempts to equate all religions? It might except for two facts: Not all pagans were monsters and the modern West (including most of the Christians living there) have a lot to learn from the Samauri about the time honored concept of willing servitude.

Paul Nowak attempts to remedy that situation with The Way of the Christian Samurai. Consisting on excerpts from noted samauri masters (the samurai were a class of elite warriors in feudal Japan) with commentary noting applications to the Christian life, the book demonstrates how much modern society has lost in its quest for unrestrained egalitarianism. Certain passages in the New Testament – particularly those showing the deference given by the Apostles and others to Jesus (even before they knew His true nature as the Son of God) – can be misconstrued without understanding the cultural milieu wherein a respected figure was shown honor by those he visited and subservience by his followers. This is at odds with our own tradition on self-reliance to the point of self-centeredness that has led to the highly individualistic form of Christianity that has taken root in America (both on the liberal and conservative ends of the spectrum). The result is the claim of Jesus as Lord without fully grasping the import of claiming someone as Lord.

The samauri may not have been Christian but they did understand concepts that are applicable to the Christian life – often better than we. Integrity, loyalty, honor, service, courage, and self-sacrifice are all things that the samurai were instructed to live. Naturally, many failed in their personal lives but that is as true of Christian clerics as of samurai warriors. The important thing was that they understood the standard for which they strived while in many cases we in the postmodern world are oblivious to the existence of standards.

The excerpts on serving one’s lord are eye-openers for any Christian with a “soft” view of service that rarely goes beyond activities at their local church. The willingness of a warrior to give himself completely to his lord underscores what it means to make oneself part of the “body of Christ”. The Church, in this context, is not an abstract collection of like-minded individuals, but a concrete force sent out to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ a dying world.

To Nowak’s credit, he constantly emphasizes that the Samurai are not in any way Christian and the Samurai way is infinitely inferior to the Way of Christ. The samurai way is at times at odds with the Christian way and in these instances we are to reject the samurai teaching. However, we can learn how we are to serve our lord by the standards the samurai set in serving theirs. It is not a direct application of samurai teachings but one by analogy. It in a sense becomes comparable to how the early Church was able to utilize classical pagan philosopy in systematizing its own theology.

In all this talk of service, one might ask: What about freedom? Indeed, the Christian faith is certainly about freedom. It is about being freed from the bondage of sin but this freedom is found in placing oneself under the headship of Christ. Christians find freedom in becoming part of Christ’s body the Church when we place ourselves in service to Him. This does not at all correlate with the modern idea of freedom that insists we must follow our own desires, but looks back to a time when willingly placing oneself in the service of a great leader was considered a virtue not a vice.

The Way of the Christian Samurai is truly an unusual book among the many published that seek to link Christianity to various Eastern religions or philosophies. It’s uniqueness lies not in any success in doing so, but in its insistence that any such linkage must be judged by the known truths of the Christian faith. Given the limited focus of the book, its acknowledgment of the superiority Biblical teaching, and its usefulness in shedding light on often ignored facets of the Christian way, it is an important book that can be read with profit by those in the Church.

Scripture points out the reason people mock Bible prophecy—that they might continue “walking after their own lusts” (2 Peter 3:3). In other words, they would prefer to deny God’s authority and His judgment upon their sin rather than repent and receive God’s salvation.

Product Description
In this four week mini Bible Study you will examine your faith and what it means to have faith in God.

He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.” Matthew 17:20

Our faith begins with what we know and believe about God. Our faith will carry us how far we are willing to let it take us. Faith is a choice and we need to begin by choosing to believe in Jesus and His power to move mountains, heal the sick, and save us from all our sins through His sacrifice on the cross.

When we believe in God we then learn to walk in faith and trust God. But first we must believe, and it’s up to us, we can either choose to believe in Him or not. But faith will mean nothing until we believe with all our heart that God is who He says He is.

This review is from: Faith – Four Week Mini Bible Study (Becoming Press Mini Bible Studies) (Kindle Edition)
This week, I read Heather Bixler’s Mini Bible Study on FAITH. This is one of my favorite subjects, and having been a Christian for many years, I didn’t suppose there was much I hadn’t already heard about it, but it’s nice to hear it, again. My goodness, was I wrong! While the scriptures were familiar, I loved the wonderfully fresh perspectives on them that can only come from someone who is truly “in touch” with the Lord. How can I say something like that? Well, I’ll tell you. It’s because I came away with something life-changing.

It was the suggestion that faith is a choice.

Now, having always considered faith to be something that “grew” in you, something you had to personally work hard to cultivate, this was a highly refreshing thought for me to think about. If all I had to do was choose (like picking chocolate over vanilla), I would choose faith all day long. Then it occurred to me that maybe I simply had the habit of looking where I had been, to figure out where I was going, instead of looking ahead. So, I started making a conscious decision to “choose faith” if ever I spotted an opportunity on my horizon. What a boon to realize there were little opportunities everywhere, once I started looking for them! And what a surprise to discover how much I liked doing it. There was a bonus, too.

Choosing faith has made me feel joyful. It makes me smile when I think about it, and gives me something to look forward to every day. What’s more, it doesn’t go away, like so many other enjoyable things do after they’re over. In short, this little Bible study made me think, and discover new things about my own Christianity. And that’s how I knew for sure where this secret truly came from. Perhaps if you read this book (and I hope you will), God will whisper something joyful to your heart, as well. Meanwhile, I’m very glad Heather Bixler took the time to share what she heard.

Thank you, Heather!

This is the third book in this series, and it keeps getting better (I can’t wait for the next book in the series). This book has a lot more drama than the others, and I like that. I’m glad to see the characters leaning on God during their troubles. I highly recommend this series.

Just a girl. The only one strong enough to break the cycle.

In Depression-era Mississippi, Millie Reynolds longs to escape the madness that marks her world. With an abusive father and a “nothing mama,” she struggles to find a place where she really belongs.

For answers, Millie turns to the Gypsies who caravan through town each spring. The travelers lead Millie to a key that unlocks generations of shocking family secrets. When tragedy strikes, the mysterious contents of the box give Millie the tools she needs to break her family’s longstanding cycle of madness and abuse.

Through it all, Millie experiences the thrill of first love while fighting to trust the God she believes has abandoned her. With the power of forgiveness, can Millie finally make her way into the free?

Saturated in Southern ambiance and written in the vein of other Southern literary bestsellers like The Help by Kathryn Stockett and Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter by Tom Franklin, Julie Cantrell has created a story that will sweep you away long after the novel ends.

Editorial Reviews
“A visceral and gripping journey of a young woman’s revelations about God and self, this novel will surely excite any reader who appreciates a compelling story about personal struggle and spiritual resilience.”

Publishers’ Weekly

“Julie Cantrell beautifully renders a vivid past, but her subjects are immediate and eternal—family secrets, love’s many losses, revenge and revelation, and finally redemption. Her characters may buck and brawl and bray against the notion of God in their lives, but there’s no denying He continues to send them into each other’s path, and Cantrell masterfully introduces them to one another in her wonderfully woven narrative. This book is full of insightful detail and wondrous turns, with an ending that moves in all directions through time like God’s grace.”

Mark Richard, author of House of Prayer No. 2

“Exquisitely written, Julie Cantrell has created a haunting story that will linger in your heart long after you’ve turned the last page.”

Karen White, New York Times bestselling author of The Beach Trees

This review is from: Into the Free: A Novel (Paperback)
My disclaimer regarding bias: I grew up with the author, and thought the world of her long before she published anything. Now, I am simply in awe of her. Most reviews I’ve written have been solicited by authors known to me personally. This review is unsolicited. I hope that my inadequate typed words are able to convey the depth of passion I have for this book.

The bottom line: I have no recollection of being so powerfully moved by written words in my lifetime.
I read the first four chapters after a long day at the office, when I greatly desired only to sleep. I forced myself to put the book away, only after awakening my bride to share a few passages with her. I rationalized savoring the experience, meteing out only a few chapters a night. Today, instead, I finished the book. I cried no less than three times. I stopped to get into the floor and play with my kid, tears in my eyes, and to hold him- telling him that I love him. Mrs. Perkin’s Millie Reynolds represents to me hundreds of victims of domestic abuse/neglect and child witnesses of domestic violence that have streamed through my office seeking therapeutic services. My tears and anguish for Millie are the tears I’ve never let myself cry for them- the depth of pain that I felt here something professional boundaries limit me from in my practice.

Julie writes with an authenticity and genuineness that perfectly captures the experience of many children who grow up in violent homes. Millie’s growth from child to late adolescent in the book tracks perfectly with the psychologic development of kids in her position. I’ve developed workshops and delivered countless trainings in this particular subject area. With Into the Free, I could instead take a front row seat in Julie’s classroom, witnessing firsthand, transfixed, the personification of everything I’ve ever learned from my clients about their experience. One of my favorite professors described empathy as walking with our clients, trying to understand their experience. With the characters in this book, I was able to walk a mile in their shoes- wanting desperately to flee from the text, but unable to abandon the young protagonist when she was so desperately alone.

I am considering making this book required reading for a class that I teach at a local university. There is no better way to experience the journey of so many of the people we work with. For those blessed to never live in Millie’s circumstance, it offers insight into the human condition. For those who have or still do, it may offer some roadmap to healing their own invisible wounds.

This is an outstanding read, its characters complex and evolving. It is easy to love young Millie Reynolds, to be afraid for her, to cheer for her, to want to hold her tightly until the storms in her life pass. The reader is treated to an age-accurate view of the world that matures as Millie does- from a dichotomous perspective that categorizes people as good or bad, to one more accurately reflecting the people that we all are- significanly more than can be described with a few adjectives.

Buy this book- the publisher guarantees to credit your purchase price if you don’t believe it worth the time most will certainly invest into it. My warning: don’t buy it if you are afraid to connect with the protagonist at a visceral level. I don’t suspect many will read the book without going through a spectrum of emotions.

This review is from: Into the Free: A Novel (Paperback)
Julie Cantrell has written a great novel. It is a story of grief, love, conflict, and forgiveness. And as it is Southern, it is especially a story of faith. It is difficult to write a review of such a story, as the risk of leaving out critical concepts is greater with the myriad of them Julie has woven so well into this tale; so brevity herein. Her characters are masterful: from her father (whom she calls by his given name, Jack)and mother to her almost-mystical, Sloth, to a knight (my appellation) named Bump the reader will attach himself to them as well as others. I don’t know where Julie came up with the idea to write INTO THE FREE, but God gave her the talent to write it.

This review is from: Jacob’s Daughter: Book One (An Amish, Christian Romance) (Kindle Edition)
I have been buying a few Kindle books as I have a rare few days off and am reading 24/7. I don’t normally buy Christian Romance or Amish Romance but had really enjoyed another book by this author – The Apothecary – which was a great ghost book, and this one kept coming up in my recommendations, so I thought I’d give it a try.
I do like Historical Romance and I recommend this book to everyone who does. It’s not so much historical in the sense of past times – but it does give a wonderful account of Amish life which is fascinating and clearly the author knows her stuff. I really enjoy fiction set in an accurate background.
I literally could not put this book down, and I am happy to see there are two more books in the series as I love series.
I just reviewed another book and it too did not come up as Verified Purchase. I am an Aussie and had a Kindle for PC for ages and have just bought a Kindle. As the email addresses are different I am wondering if this is the reason.
I HIGHLY recommend this book.

This review is from: Jacob’s Daughter: Book One (An Amish, Christian Romance) (Kindle Edition)
This book was just the right length for the price. So many books contain tons of filler just to extend the page count–they come off as boring!

This books is anything BUT boring–it was very exciting from start to finish.

I liked how the author handled Lizzie’s past and the mistakes that she made–very tactful writing.

This is a sweet love story, that deals with the trials of family relationships, and how to deal with them in a Christian manner.

I would highly recommend this book to lovers of Amish and Christian Romance who want to read a story with realistic characters, by an author who tells it like it is!

Product Description
Topping the New York Times list and already selling five million copies, The Love Dare has established itself as more than a book; it’s an unstoppable marriage movement. And like the husband in Fireproof (the film where The Love Dare originated), readers know this 40-day challenge to understand and practice unconditional love with their spouse need not end when the book does.

With that in mind, The Love Dare Day by Day encourages and challenges couples toward new steps in faith and love with 365 marital encouragements, reminders, and action points worth repeating year after year.

Unconditional love is eagerly promised at weddings, but rarely practiced in real life. As a result, romantic hopes are often replaced with disappointment in the home. But it doesn’t have to stay that way. Whether your marriage is hanging by a thread or healthy and strong, The Love Dare Day by Day is a journey you need to take. It’s time to learn the keys to finding true intimacy

5.0 out of 5 stars You Might Need This If You Plan to Buy Any Of the Newest 2011 Kindles Except the Fire!, September 29, 2011
By Ellen Ripley (ILLINOIS, USA) – This review is from: Amazon Kindle US Power Adapter (Kindle, Kindle Touch, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle DX) (Accessory)
The newly announced $79 Kindle, the Kindle Touch Wi-Fi and Kindle Touch 3G come with an included USB 2.0 cable that you can use to charge your device by connecting it to a computer. But the specs also say:

So you are going to need one of these if you ordered one of these Kindles. I guess that’s why they are 50% off. Amazon is trying to take some of the sting out of the deal for when everyone finds out that they need an adapter to plug/charge it in a wall outlet. In the past all Kindles came with the adapter included in the purchase price. Welcome to the new AMAZON!

Note: The Kindle Fire comes with both a USB cable and it’s own power adapter, so you won’t need one for the Fire.

This is the same adapter that you should already have if you own one of the the latest generation Kindles, so no need to buy a 2nd one. I lost the adapter on my Kindle 3 and had to buy one of these. It works as it should, it charges the Kindle.

” I can’t think of a single other gadget that costs less than $100 that I’d actually recommend,
which makes the new Kindle just about the best Christmas gift out there.” – Popular Science
” The basic Kindle e-reader from Amazon now starts at $79, a price point that’s very hard to resist. It seems that those
