gods not dead 51ddRA2boQL__AA160_

It’s the debate of the ages, this time in a college classroom, and the verdict will be life changing. Atheist philosophy instructor Prof. Radisson opens the first day of class by proposing that, in order to forgo “dusty arguments” and failing grades, students may hand in a piece of paper declaring that “God Is Dead”. Josh Wheaton, a Christian is unable to bring himself to make such a declaration and must defend his faith to prove to the class that God is not dead after all.

When your life is over, everything you did will be represented by a single dash between two dates—what will that dash mean for the people you have known and loved?

As Joseph Epstein once said, “We do not choose to be born. We do not choose our parents, or the country of our birth. We do not, most of us, choose to die. . . . But within this realm of choicelessness, we do choose how we live.” And that is what The Dash is all about.

Beginning with an inspiring poem by Linda Ellis titled “The Dash,” renowned author Mac Anderson then applies his own signature commentary on how the poem motivates us to make certain choices in our lives—choices to ignore the calls of selfishness and instead reach out to others, using our God-given abilities to brighten their days and lighten their loads.

After all, at the end of life, how we will be remembered—whether our dash represents a full, joyous life of seeking God’s glory, or merely the space between birth and death—will be entirely up to the people we’ve left behind, the lives we’ve changed

In 2006, he was the Co-Executive Producer of Though None Go With Me, a movie based on his father’s book that aired on The Hallmark Channel. His feature directing debut, also called Midnight Clear, was based on his short film and was featured in over a dozen film festivals, including winning the Cinequest Film Festival award for “Best First Feature” and the “Audience Choice” award at the Kansas International Film Festival.

In 2009, Dallas directed his 2nd feature film, entitled What If… starring Kevin Sorbo, Kristy Swanson, John Ratzenberger, and Debby Ryan. The film hit theaters in Fall 2010. Product Description
Fifteen years ago, Ben Walker (Kevin Sorbo) made a decision to leave his college sweetheart Wendy (Kristy Swanson), and ultimately his faith, in order to pursue a lucrative business opportunity. Now on the verge of marriage to an equally materialistic fiance, he is visited by an angelic mechanic (John Ratzenberger) who tells him that he needs to see what his life would have been like had he followed Gods calling. Suddenly, Ben finds himself married to Wendy with two daughters, including a rebellious teen (Debby Ryan), getting ready for church on a Sunday morning, where he’s scheduled to give his first sermon as the new pastor. If Ben wants to get back to his old life, he must first learn to appreciate the value of faith and family, and perhaps rediscover the love of his life. In the tradition of It’s a Wonderful Life and The Family Man, What If tells the story of a man whose glimpse into what he’s missing reminds him of what he truly wants.
What If received the “Dove Foundation’s Family Seal of Approval” with 5 out of 5 Doves and was also awarded the Parent’s Television Councils PTC seal of Approval™.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good and convenient daily devotional October 5, 2012
By T. Seiders
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified PurchaseThirty-one good devotionals that each focuses on a different one of God’s promises to us. These are just the right length for me. Each morning I spend about 5-10 minutes to read, study and meditate on that day’s devotion. The topic for that morning becomes my theme for the day. For example today being the 5th the topic/theme is to be grateful to God for all of his blessings. So today whenever I had a free moment I did just that.
I plan for this to be my morning devotional for the next 12-15 months. Each month with each re-reading and meditation I will go further and deeper with the daily themes than I did the month before.
I am also keeping a notebook in which I will write my thoughts and insights. I have a section at the end where I am recording every time I see God’s hand at work in my life. In just five days I have nine entries.
If you are looking for a daily devotional that is upbeat, inspiring and designed for someone with a busy life then this may be what you are looking for.

In Think Big, which emanates from the last chapter of his best-selling Gifted Hands, Dr. Ben Carson prescribes his personal formula for success. And who could better advise than one who transformed his own life from that of being a ghetto kid with problems in school to becoming the most celebrated pediatric neurosurgeon in the world? With an acrostic, Dr. Carson spells out his philosophy of living: T -Talents/time: Recognize as gifts from God H -Hope for good things and be honest I -insight from people and good books N -Be nice to all people K -Knowledge: Recognize as they key to living B -Books: Read them actively I -In-depth learning skills: Develop them G -God: Never get too big for Him — Think Big does not offer pat answers, or promise a life of ease, but it does show how a person should view problems, evaluate them, react to them, and eventually overcome them. The philosophy in Think Big can be applied by all individuals to their own lives and help them to make the most of the gifts that God has given them.

From the Back Cover
This book is for you if your life is a series of shattered dreams. This book is for you if you have no dreams at all. It’s for you if you’ve bought the lie that you’ll never amount to anything. That’s not true. Your life is BIG—far bigger than you’ve imagined. Inside these pages lie the keys to recognizing the full potential of your life. You won’t necessarily become a millionaire (though you might), but you will attain a life that is rewarding, significant, and more fruitful than you ever thought possible. The author of this book knows about hardship. Ben Carson grew up in inner-city Detroit. His mother was illiterate. His father had left the family. His grade-school classmates considered Ben stupid. He struggled with a violent temper. In every respect, Ben’s harsh circumstances seemed only to point to a harsher future and a bad end. But that’s not what happened. By applying the principles in this book, Ben rose from his tough life to one of amazing accomplishments and international renown. He learned that he had potential, he learned how to unleash it, and he did. You can too. Put the principles in this book in motion. Things won’t change overnight, but they will change. You can transform your life into one you’ll love, bigger than you’ve ever dreamed.

Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
YA– A brief, easy-to-read autobiography of a black man who is one of today’s leading neurosurgeons. While pursuing his career, Carson encountered prejudice, negative peer pressure, and politics in getting a job. His sense of humor, faith in God, patience, and his belief in the work ethic come through without preaching. In the last chapter, Carson gives recommendations to students on ways to live and to achieve. –Claudia Moore, W. T. Woodson High School, Fairfax, VA

From the Publisher
In 1987, Dr. Benjamin Carson gained worldwide recognition for his part in the first successful separation of Siamese twins joined at the back of the head. The extremely complex and delicate operation, five months in the planning and twenty-two hours in the execution, involved a surgical plan that Carson helped initiate.

Carson pioneered again in a rare procedure known as hemispherectomy, giving children without hope a second chance at life through a daring operation in which he literally removed one half of their brain.

But such breakthroughs aren’t unusual for Ben Carson. He’s been beating the odds since he was a child.

Raised in inner-city Detroit by a mother with a third grade education, Ben lacked motivation. He had terrible grades. And a pathological temper threatened to put him in jail. But Sonya Carson convinced her son that he could make something of his life, even though everything around him said otherwise.

Trust in God, a relentless belief in his own capabilities, and sheer determination catapulted Ben from failing grades to the top of his class–and beyond to a Yale scholarship . . . the University of Michigan Medical School . . . and finally, at age 33, the directorship of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Today, Dr. Ben Carson holds twenty honorary doctorates and is the possessor of a long string of honors and awards, including the Horatio Alger Award, induction into the “Great Blacks in Wax” Museum in Baltimore, Maryland, and an invitation as Keynote Speaker at the 1997 President’s National Prayer Breakfast.

Gifted Hands is the riveting story of one man’s secret for success, tested against daunting odds and driven by an incredible mindset that dares to take risks. This inspiring autobiography takes you into the operating room to witness surgeries that made headlines around the world–and into the private mind of a compassionate, God-fearing physician who lives to help others. Through it all shines a humility, quick wit, and down-to-earth style that make this book one you won’t easily forget. Dr. Benjamin Carson is director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. He lives with his wife, Candy, and three sons in West Friendship, Maryland.

5.0 out of 5 stars Contagious inspiration and motivational drive June 20, 2004
By QUEEN_OF_EVERYTHING
Format:PaperbackGIFTED HANDS, an autobiographical look into the life of one of the best neurosurgeons in the U. S. of A, is so unbelievably inspirational and poignant. If 100 people simultaneously read this book, I assure you at least one of them would walk away a changed person! I know Ben Carson has changed me. From now on, I’m vowing to do my absolute best. This year of homeschooling has given me many opportunities to “slack off” as one might say – I’ve taken a few of those opportunities. Even though I ended up with mostly As, I’m vowing to give my all into my academic performance next year. Ben Carson’s motivational drive is absolutely contagious!
Benjamin Carson, M.D started out on the mean Detroit streets. His father had to leave the family after it was found he was practically living a double life: he had a girlfriend and another family while married to Ben’s mother. While his mother assured him the family would be fine, they had to struggle to make ends meet. Yet all the while, she kept pushing and pushing Ben to be the best he could possibly be. All the while, she knew he had it in him to get out of the Detroit ghetto in which they lived. All the while, she knew he’d make something of himself. And he did.

We see an amazing transformation from a skeptical kid, unsure of life, to an intelligent neurosurgeon with a heart of gold – so much so that he can’t help but break down and cry when surgery results in the death of a patient. He is a person who made the best of his education, as well as his college years. He went from being the best to simply doing his best and can be regarded as an inspiration to all because his standard of life he began with wasn’t as favorable as many rich families who have attended Ivy League colleges for generations. In his case, he along with his older brother, Curtis, were the first in the family to attend colleges. Curtis ended up at University of Michigan – Ann Arbor and Ben enrolled at Yale University, where he met his wife, Candy.

Ben’s beginnings were certainly not easy. Signs of determination showed as young as the age of 10. He started out as the “class dummy” in school, frequently getting every single question on his math tests wrong. But then, through hard work and a lot of reading at the local library, plus a new presciption for glasses, he expanded his knowledge in every subject. Soon, “good” wasn’t good enough. Ben was driven to be the best. In fact, he was so driven that he won a full scholarship to the renowned Yale University.

God has clearly played a pivotal role in Ben’s life. Before operating, he always prays to the Lord. But one life experience in particular especially is one I won’t soon forget. Ben feared flunking a Yale exam and knew last-minute cramming would do him no good. As he slept, he dreamt of the mathematical facts and figures and equations. The next day, he nervously proceeded to take the exam and realized many of the questions had been in his prior dream! After a lot of worrying, Ben scored a 97 on the exam. He knew it was God’s way of helping him.

What I most enjoy about this autobiography is the way in which Ben addresses the readers. Whether his audience ranges from the age of 13 to the age of 99, either age should enjoy it. Clearly, Ben is a brilliant genius. He speaks eloquently, yet he doesn’t throw in the “big words” he could probably use if he chose to. Instead, his story is told through simple language that anyone can understand.

Ben Carson ought to be regarded as a role model for today’s youth. Those not on the right path to a successful future could especially benefit, as a book like this could assist in a serious straightening out of priorities. As I mentioned before, Ben’s motivational drive is contagious and inspiring! This down-to-earth doctor’s story is really meant for everyone, teens and adults alike.

The font is nice and big and embroidered into the notebook to give it classic look. I love that. I use it for prayer request, sermon notes and to write to God. I love it and it came at a rapid rate!!

Format:Imitation Leather|Amazon Verified PurchaseI really love this journal. I purchased it because of the inscription of Jer 29:11 on the front. It also has a verse on the bottom of each page. The pages have gold colored edges. I like that it has a place for a date at the top of each page and it has lines. I would purchase this item again and I think it would make a great gift. In fact if it is available I am going to get one for my daughter for Christmas.

Format:Imitation Leather|Amazon Verified Purchase”Be still, and know that I am God….” Ps. 46:10a

God speaks in a very quiet voice; one must be still (quiet) in order to hear what He has to say. This is an excellent journal to record His plans, your requests, and His responses. Look back later to see how much you have grown in your knowledge and wisdom of the Lord. Also an excellent gift for a graduate to record his/her college experiences, or a new chapter in the next phase of their life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prepare to have your faith challenged and life shaken! July 18, 1999
By A Customer
Format:HardcoverThis book is probably the most spirit filled and guided work I’ve read in a long time. You can not help but hear the voice of God calling you to a deeper relationship with Him as you read this amazing classic. From begining to end each page is an impassioned plea for the reader to abandon “comfortable Christianity” in order to truly know God as He desires to be known. You can see right away that truly Mr. Tozer wrote this book on his knees. I found myself challenged to look at my own faith in Christ and what I should be doing with that faith in every chapter. Sometimes with weeping and confessing and always compelled to deep times of prayer and renewel in God’s presence. The chapter entitled “The Blessedness of Possesing Nothing” should be required reading for anyone confessing Christ as their Lord. I was totally blown away and my life with Christ and my own pursuit of God has been forever enriched. I have read this book over and over and shared much of it with friends and family. If you are “stuck” in you walk with the Lord, let the Spirit of God use this book to shake you loose and move you onward and upward.

Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified PurchaseThis is one of a few books I’ve read that, upon reading it, actually manifested God’s presence. In line with the teaching of the book, God impressed upon me his love and his desire for a more intimate relationship. I broke into tears. Few books have had that impact. The chapter entitled “The Blessedness of Possessing Nothing” is a profound call to absolute simplicity and abandonment to God who owns everything you may think you “possess”, including yourself! Surrender it all to God and see what miracles will be wrought for His glory. Let God possess you! For those who want other recommendations, try “The Christian’s Secret to a Happy Life” by Hannah Whitall Smith, “A Testament of Devotion” by Thomas Kelly, “Abandonment to Divine Providence” by Jean-Pierre de Caussade, “The Practice of the Presence of God” by Brother Lawrence and, for those who want to experience God’s holiness in a powerful way, “The Holiness of God” by R.C. Sproul. – Brad Clark
5.0 out of 5 stars The Pursuit of God – made easier to know and practice. April 1, 2011
By Mike
Format:Kindle EditionDidn’t realize that when they called this book a classic they really meant it. Many ideas and also clear direction to a more full walk with God (which, I think, is what we all really want). For the believer, God’s “distance” is never the issue. It is only that we are to tune in to Him and the reassurance of His already immediate presence is known and felt by us. The idea of God’s Throne in one’s life (and there is room only for One on the throne at any time) is simplified. Yes, we want to walk with God. But remember it is He who reaches out to us before we can know Him in the first place. No wonder this book is so highly regarded

This book is the same one that caused St. Ignatious of Loyola to found the Society of Jesus. The members of the society follow the charisms of education, prayer, service of the POPE (that is correct the Pope of the Roman Catholic Church), and poverty (not to the extent of friars but still poverty). These men who give up 11 years of their life just to be accepted into the society. The extremly sad part for me is that only 50 years ago there used to be from 30 – 60 applicants per year to grow closer to Jesus and serve the Pope. This year in 2012 there have been only 2 applicants. I saw those two today on Feb 28 2012 in my high school and within one single class period (45 min) they have turned my life around. Two people one from Wisconson (My home state) and one from Texas are joining the about 250ish total Jesuits from the Society of Jesus. Think about that take the total world population then divide it by the number of Roman Catholics and divide that by the number of Jesuits and divide that by the number of members of the Society of Jesus. I honestly dont know what it is but it`s probably something like .00000001% or something insane like that. With the 2 happenings today: meeting the two applicants and me finding this book not on purpose, it is clear to me God wants me to become a member of The Society of Jesus. Please encourage others to follow what I have stated here today. May you find Jesus in your lives, Amen.

Book Description
Publication Date: October 7, 2008 | Series: Inspired By…Media Group
Now on eight MP3 CDs, the most ambitious, critically acclaimed presentation of the Bible ever produced. Inspired By … The Bible Experience features a star-studded cast of 400 performers, including 23 Grammy winners, 8 Emmy winners, 5 Golden Globe winners, and 3 Oscar winners. Highlighting the cast is 2007 Academy Award-winning actor Forest Whitaker as the voice of Moses, along with Angela Bassett (Esther), Cuba Gooding, Jr. (Jonah), Denzel and Pauletta Washington (Song of Songs), LL Cool J (Samson), Eartha Kitt (Serpent), Bishop T. D. Jakes (Abraham), Blair Underwood (Jesus), Samuel Jackson (God, NT only), and Bishop Eddie L. Long (Joel), among others. The Bible Experience uses Zondervan’s most accessible and up-to-date translation, Today’s New International Version (TNIV), and includes dramatic performances set to an original musical underscore by the Prague Symphony Orchestra and Hollywood-style sound design created at Technicolor Studios. The Bible Experience has become not just the bestselling audio Bible, but also one of the all-time fastest-selling new Bibles. In addition to record-breaking sales, Inspired By … The Bible Experience has received unprecedented consumer satisfaction and national recognition, including numerous five-star reviews on Amazon.com, an Audies Audiobook of the Year (the highest honor of the Audio Publisher’s Association), an AudioFile Earphones Award, and a nomination for an NAACP Image Award. The complete Bible features eight MP3 CDs plus a bonus ‘making of’ DVD. The eight MP3 CDs include the full text of the Bible for reading as you listen on your iPod or other MP3 player with the lyrics/text feature.

Editorial Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. This is not your grandmother’s recorded Scripture. The Bible Experience breathes new life into the pages of the bestselling book of all time, enthralling the listener with its energy, wit, adventure, romance and power. The New Testament captured the Audiobook of the Year honor in 2007; now with the entire Bible available, the complete work has set the standard for excellence that is maintained across 85 hours. Of the more than 400 cast members, picking out favorites is harder than a rich man going through the eye of a needle, but there are some standouts. Robert Guillaume plays Noah with a wisdom that warrants God’s mercy. Faith Evans, MC Lyte and others make the music and lyricism of Psalms come to new life. Cuba Gooding Jr. reminds us why he won an Oscar with his portrayals of the recalcitrant Jonah in the Old Testament and the ultimate traitor Judas in the New Testament. The Song of Solomon soars as Denzel and Pauletta Washington bring the ancient love poetry into the here and now. This is not Charlton Heston declaiming page after page of a dusty tome. The Bible Experience pulls you in and makes you part of what is arguably the greatest story ever told.

‘…a full show of music, sound effects, and a dazzling array of celebrity voices. The producers…put together a cast of…actors who deliver a rich, diverse rendering of the contemporary Today’s New International Version (TNIV) translation in gospel-meeting style. Listeners are treated to a sort of aural kaleidoscope with layers of voices, sound, and music….The lavish production pulls out all the stops….If a modern multimedia production experience is what you’re after, enjoy the fine voices and often dynamic dramatized readings.’ — AudioFile

5.0 out of 5 stars What an experience October 27, 2007
By S. Bennett
Format:Audio CDThe purchase of the Bible on CD is the best purchase I have made this year. I have tried to listen to other versions of the bible, however there is something special to be said about the voices in this project. The artist are able to project in a fashion that sounds modern. When I am listening, I feel every word. I am totally delighted that I spent the money on this set of CD’S and I am fortunate enought to be able to give out a couple of the sets to Loved ones for Christmas.

4.0 out of 5 stars TNIV On CD: A Masterpiece January 8, 2008
By Itani Mullik
Format:Audio CDBeing an avid supporter of the Today’s New International Version of the Bible, which is, in my opinion, one of the most potent translations to date, the Bible Experience was a dream come true, a breath of fresh air, a tall, carefully produced, excellently read, and fashionably dramatized masterpiece. I didn’t experience this project until it was released in it’s entirety, and thank God, I’m glad I was graced with the patience to hold out until they released the TNIV in it’s entirety via Inspired By. What we have here is a set of 60 cd’s(Old Testament) coupled with the 19 cd’s(New Testament) from the earlier release of this project along with a bonus dvd about the Making of the Bible Experience. I can honestly say, in all sincerity, that this audiobible experience by far surpasses my prior experiences with NIV, KJV, the Message and other Bible versions on cd. The scriptures are read word for word by some of the world’s leading actors, actresses, and pastors…well-versed, well-acted…and the background efx make the experience quite believable. It’s best described as listening to a motion picture, ‘seeing’ the biblical accounts via one’s own imagination.

I was particularly impressed by the Old Testament in that, in hearing the passages read, the OT came alive as never before. I used to consider the OT to be too lengthy and slow for my taste, but hearing it dramatized made a world of difference. From Adam & Eve to David, Solomon, & the Prophets you have an experience greater than that of some of the greatest biblical epic depictions. The ironic twists, the wars, the betrayals…the drama is all there and will leave you craving for more. My fav’s were the the Torah/Pentateuch, 1-2 Samuel, 1-2 Kings, 1-2 Chronicles, Psalms, the Major and Minor Prophets…all of which I, at one time, considered impossible to read in their entirety until now, and all of which point to the fulfilment of Messianic prophecy, being the coming of Jesus Christ.

I enjoyed the New Testament as well, though I was waaaaay too familar with it and it’s happenings. As with the OT, the books are well acted, well read, and the sound efx bring the scriptures to life. However, one who’s listened to enough of the Bible Experience to compare/contrast the OT & NT seteups will note the difference in format. While the OT was all drama, the NT passages, starting with the Pauline epistles, feature excerpts of recordings contributed by of Gospel’s leading artists (ie, Bishop Paul S. Morton, Take 6, Ann Nesby, Judah Generation, etc). Not that I don’t live the songs or the artists that so graciously contributed to the success of the Bible Experience, it’s just that I wasn’t expecting to hear abridged songs between certain verses in the NT set, and in my opinion, it would’ve been more appropriate to leave the Pauline epistles -Revelation uninterrupted, featuring the songs on a bonus sdtk disk as opposed to the “commercial break format” that popped up between selected verses. That having been said, it is the treatment of the Pauline epistles-Revelation that cost the Bible Experience(particularly the NT) a star. If they ever consider re-releasing the project, they should consider exclusding the gospel joints from the text and feature them on another bonus disk. My 2 red cents though. Other than that, greated audiobible to date. Highly recommended. Peace.

Book Description
Publication Date: July 24, 2012
Wrecked is about the life we are afraid to live. It’s about radical sacrifice and selfless service–how we find purpose in the midst of pain. It’s a look at how we discover fulfillment in the least likely of places. It’s about living like we mean it. It’s a guide to growing up and giving your life away, helping you live in the tension between the next adventure and the daily mundane.

This book is for us–a generation intent on pursuing our life’s work in a way that leaves us without regrets.

Author Jeff Goins shares his own experience of struggling as a missionary and 20-something who understands the call to live radically while dealing with the everyday responsibilities of life. Wrecked is a manifesto for a generation dissatisfied with the status quo and wanting to make a difference.

Editorial Reviews
Review
In His upside-down Kingdom, God promises we can actually find our life by giving it away to others. What is your God-given passion for serving? What is outside of you and bigger than you that demands your time, talent and treasure? I encourage you to ponder that as you read Jeff’s thoughts in Wrecked. The result will be life changing … and you may be surprised to discover that the life changed could be yours.
-Dr. Wess Stafford, President and CEO, Compassion International

The dissatisfaction we feel has a surprising remedy, and this beautiful book tells us what it is: we need to change, and we need to be broken. The lessons of Wrecked will lead you through the wilderness.
-Chris Guillebeau, Author, The $100 Startup

A stunning debut, this book-admittedly-wrecked me. In Wrecked, Jeff Goins held nothing back, using his poetic writing and passion for change-making to call me to action in my own life. He’ll do the same for you.
-Claire Díaz-Ortiz, Social Innovation, Twitter, Inc.

It’s been said, “The true Gospel comforts the disturbed and disturbs the comfortable.” Jeff reminds us that Jesus not only came to heal broken hearts-but also to shatter the status quo. Let his book be an invitation to say ‘yes’ to Jesus and then do something daring with your life. May it help you become a holy nonconformist to all the patterns of this world that are out of sync with the upside-down Kingdom of God. May it give you the courage to join the revolutionary work of Jesus, loving people back to life and building a new world in the shell of the old one.
-Shane Claiborne, author, activist, and lover of Jesus, www.facebook.com/ShaneClaiborne

Although Jeff Goins writes of his experience working with missionaries and ministry, this is truly a guide to growing up and committing to a worthy cause. Yes, young people will find this book immensely practical and helpful, but so will anyone of any age who wants to do work that matters. Perhaps you are like me, at the stage of life where you wonder if you are chasing air and evaluating your overall purpose and impact-this book is also for you. Get Wrecked and walk away changed.
-Carrie Wilkerson, Author, The Barefoot Executive, Host of BarefootExecutive.TV

Jeff Goins wrote my favorite kind of book. First he lived it, then he wrote it. The result is a book that everyone who has ever wondered “Is there more to life than this?” should read.
-Jon Acuff, Wall Street Journal Bestselling Author of Quitter: Closing the Gap Between Your Day Job & Your Dream Job

Jeff Goins has written an inspiring, instructive, exciting, forceful call for young people. I’d love to give it to almost every twenty-something I know.
-Shauna Niequist, author of Cold Tangerines and Bittersweet, www.shaunaniequist.com.

There is a life that most of us dream of living. Chances are you won’t drift into that life. But there are some clear choices you can make along the way to set yourself up to receive all that God has for you. Jeff does a masterful job of gracefully yet purposely helping us take the steps of faith so many of us need to take.
-Pete Wilson, Pastor of Cross Point Church, Author of Plan B and Empty Promises

With Wrecked, Jeff Goins goes way beyond a simple call to action. He gives you a manifesto for getting off the sidelines and living the kind of life you’ve only dreamed about. Be warned-Wrecked will change you! This is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time.
-Mark Lee, Guitarist and founding member of Third Day

Jeff Goins is a precise and passionate speaker which is also true of his writing. No unnecessary verbiage-to the point truth that will change our lives. I like that…I like that a lot.
-Patsy Clairmont, Author, Stained Glass Hearts

Jeff Goins has written a clear-eyed book about the grit and glory of growing up and choosing commitment over complacency. His perspective is refreshing and at times hard to hear, but it brims with practical wisdom for those who yearn to serve a purpose larger than themselves.
-Ian Morgan Cron, Author, Jesus, My Father, the CIA, and Me: a Memoir…of Sorts

Wrecked is a book you should be deliciously afraid to read because it’s content will collide into your conscience and derail your future into a life more meaningful than the one you’ve lived before.
-Sarah Cunningham, Author, Idea Junkie, and Blogger who tries to bring people together around good things. www.sarahcunningham.org

Wrecked fulfills two rare deliverables: it messes with you (in a good way), and introduces you to the fantastic writing of a new author you’ll certainly be hearing more from.
-Mark Oestreicher, Partner, The Youth Cartel

I’ve read Jeff’s writing for years, and I can tell you: What he talks about, he lives. As someone who has given his life to helping the least and less-fortunate, he shares his heart-rending experiences and struggles in a voice that resonates. Read this book, but be warned: You won’t finish it the same way you started it.
-Anne Jackson, Speaker and Author, Mad Church Disease and Permission to Speak Freely

I loved this book. The stories filled me with a desire to be more, risk more, and live more. Who would have guessed that being wrecked is really the beginning to living? If you want to live, get Wrecked – read it, then do it!
-Ken Davis, Author, Fully Alive, Speaker, and Communications Trainer

Wrecked reminded me of my own times of beautiful wrecking, and it wooed me once again toward a sacrificial, joyful life. The stories, the writing, the theology all beckoned me to live intentionally, work hard, and obey Jesus afresh.
-Mary DeMuth, Author, Everything: What You Gain and What You Give to Become Like Jesus

If you’re someone who is groping in the dark without purpose or inspiration, Wrecked just might be the flashlight you need, enabling you to see the next step in the journey.
-Frank Viola, Author, From Eternity to Here and Jesus Manifesto, www.frankviola.org

Jeff has the rare gift of moving hearts. You’ll find encouragement, be inspired to step out of your comfort zone, and live with purpose. Enjoy the journey.
-Alli Worthington, Founder of Picha Global and BlissDom

My dreams and goals have all been sideswiped by something much greater than I could muster up in my dream machine of a brain. So many times we chase and run after a dream and dodge the very things that will get us closer to the dream if we would only allow them to. Jeff has taken stories in this book and wrapped practical advice on what to do when life hits the fan. We think it’s over. But it’s only just beginning…
-Carlos Whittaker, Blogger, Musician, & Creative Coach

In Wrecked, Jeff Goins emerges as a noteworthy and influential voice for this generation. As great writers do, he frames the pain that accompanies compassion with words and stories I won’t soon forget. Reader beware: change is coming and Jeff Goins holds the megaphone.
-Emily P. Freeman, Author, Grace for the Good Girl

Everything Jeff Goins writes is purposeful, fervent, and full of humanity. The stories and ideas in this book will break you, shape you, and ultimately fill you.

If you’re looking to be stirred towards something more, encouraged toward your true calling, and challenged to act accordingly, even when it’s hard, read Wrecked and join the adventure of a lifetime!
-Cheri Keaggy, Dove Award-winning Singer/Songwriter, Speaker, Blogger

Wrecked is a creative mix of wit, transparency, and courageous thinking that will catch you off guard and lead you on an unexpected exploration into your own soul and calling. Open this book if you dare to live life to the fullest.
-Charles Lee, CEO of Ideation, & Author, Good Idea. Now What?

The compassion Christ calls us to can sometimes break us in ways that completely wreck our former way of living in our comfortable little worlds. Goins challenges readers to live life not only on purpose but with purpose-remembering that none of us gets a second chance at life. If you are ready to make a difference-a real, raw, life-altering difference in the world-then Wrecked is a must-read.
-Lorie Newman, Speaker, Orphan Advocate, and Author, A Cup of Cold Water in His Name: 60 Ways to Care for the Needy

Jeff Goins is one of the freshest writers coming on the scene today. He not only brings a raw, authentic perspective to the issues we struggle with most but also a surprising wisdom that is far beyond his years. Wrecked is a must-read because if you haven’t been, you will be. And this book is for such a time as this.
-Ben Arment, Creator of STORY and Dream Year

Vulnerable and gritty, Wrecked is going to dig into your heart and change you. You will be compelled to live.
-Sarah Mae, Author, Desperate

In a world that teaches us to spend our lives building hollow monuments to our comfort and success, the message of Wrecked rings true: we must allow our monuments to be knocked down in order to make way for something that will endure. Wrecked is a guide down a beautiful, broken road, and I’m grateful for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Making a Difference, August 1, 2012
By Jeremy Statton –
This review is from: Wrecked: When a Broken World Slams into your Comfortable Life (Paperback)
Being familiar with his writing, Goins’ first trade book was a surprise. With a title like Wrecked, I expected stories of traveling the world and living out of the ordinary. Although Goins is encouraging us to live life differently, it just isn’t for the sake of it. This book isn’t about living in Africa to be different. It is about actually seeing the world and the people who live in it with you differently. Goins doesn’t just encourage you to travel to Africa and gain perspective, although I believe he would encourage you to do this. He is also emphasizing commitment. He encourages us to be involved in people’s lives in a way that matter. To truly make a difference for them and not just to make ourselves feel better.

Book Description

Building on her signature message of using the mind to master difficult emotions, Joyce Meyer focuses on the most destructive, insidious one of all: anger. It is responsible for broken relationships, sleepless nights, high blood pressure and ulcers. It destroys friendships, marriages and families, not to mention peace of mind. Anger is especially hard to handle for many Christians who have learned from childhood that “good Christians don’t get angry.” Meyer argues that properly handled, anger is an alert system that something is wrong and needs to be resolved.

In her latest book, she delves into the important process of forgiving, explaining its positive impact on the roots, the forms and the results of anger.

Why forgive? Joyce explains that forgiving is the only thing that can free one from the terrible turmoil that anger causes to spill over into every part of life.

Meyer understands that life will never be fair, but that is not a reason to let anger destroy our well-being and health. This is her guide to navigating that thorny territory and finding true peace.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I’ve ever read, April 17, 2012
By Sugarplum – See all my reviewsAmazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This review is from: Do Yourself a Favor…Forgive: Learn How to Take Control of Your Life Through Forgiveness (Hardcover)
A very powerful book that helped me get out of depression due to abusive relationship!

I had been abused in many ways by my husband and though I tried very hard, it was very difficult for me to be free from all the painful memories. I would often wonder, ‘Why would God just let him be when he is so destructive and evil?’
At one point, I did have to run away from him with our child for the sake of sanity as well as safety. Life became frustrating because I am in no man’s land – not divorced, not separated, yet I’m practically a single mother in every sense.
I read Karen’s post and totally understand what she’s saying about the danger of reconnecting with dangerous exes. I believe that God will never force us to meet and reconnect with husbands or exes unless hearts are ready and God’s timing is ripe. I believe what Joyce is saying here is to prepare our hearts the way God wants us to so that He can work in our relationships and bring healing.
It takes a lot of effort on my part to finally accept and say that despite what happened, God is good and His goodness and faithfulness will prevail in this mess of my life.

After reading this book, I was able to set aside all the excuses. Finally, I decided and declared that I forgive and bless my husband and let the past pass. It does not mean I am running back to him right now because he, unchanged and unrepentant, will definitely harm me.
It just means I am not gonna spend nights crying, hurting, and hating my husband. I am so tired of it and I want to be free. I have no idea how long I have to live like this, but I will put my hope and trust in God – something I could not do prior to reading this book.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to take off huge burdens of offenses, anger, turmoils, and painful memories resulted by strained relationships: While they never just disappear,it feels so much better and lighter to set them aside and let God take care of these heavy loads.
Joyce is right, we must forgive because God commands us to forgive as the ones who are forgiven. But in the process, we will realize that we are actually doing ourselves a huge favor by forgiving… Freedom from depression, self-pity, and pain!

A generation stands on the brink of a “rebelution.” A growing movement of young people is rebelling against the low expectations of today’s culture by choosing to “do hard things” for the glory of God. And Alex and Brett Harris are leading the charge.

Do Hard Things is the Harris twins’ revolutionary message in its purest and most compelling form, giving readers a tangible glimpse of what is possible for teens who actively resist cultural lies that limit their potential.

Combating the idea of adolescence as a vacation from responsibility, the authors weave together biblical insights, history, and modern examples to redefine the teen years as the launching pad of life. Then they map out five powerful ways teens can respond for personal and social change.

Written by teens for teens, Do Hard Things is packed with humorous personal anecdotes, practical examples, and stories of real-life rebelutionaries in action. This rallying cry from the heart of an already-happening teen revolution challenges a generation to lay claim to a brighter future, starting today.

“Most people don’t expect you to understand what we’re going to tell you in this book. And even if you understand, they don’t expect you to care. And even if you care, they don’t expect you to do anything about it. And even if you do something about it, they don’t expect it to last. We do.” – Alex and Brett

Review
Praise for Do Hard Things

“Do Hard Things is an extraordinary book. In fact, I believe it will prove to be one of the most life-changing, family-changing, church-changing, and culture-changing books of this generation. I’d love for every teenager to read this book, but I’m just as eager for every parent, church leader, and educator to read it.”
– Randy Alcorn, best-selling author of Heaven and The Treasure Principle

“This book is one I would recommend to any of my friends, teen or not. If it doesn’t help you, you are lying.”
– Carter B., age 14, North Carolina

“Do Hard Things is so important. It is challenging teenagers to rebel against the low expectations placed on them. And the voices that are asking teens to rise to meet this challenge are voices from their own generation. That thrills me.”
– Chuck Colson, best-selling author of How Now Shall We Live?

“I love the way it is written. It is crystal clear, to the point, interesting, funny, challenging, encouraging, and an easy read.”
– Lisa R., age 15, Australia

“Adult expectations for youth are too low. And these twins are out to raise them. Don’t adapt to the low cultural expectations for youth. Set high ones. Youth can become examples for adults. Think that way. Dream that way. Or as the Harris brothers would say, ‘Rebel against low expectations.’”
– John Piper, best-selling author of Don’t Waste Your Life

“The message of Do Hard Things is going to awaken the dreams and passions of thousands of young people all over the world. How do I know this? This radical, yet relatively simple idea, has changed my life.”
– Erika H., age 18, Michigan

“In a culture where laziness and ease is often the order of the day for teenagers, Do Hard Things presents a radical and provocative alternative. I heartily recommend this book.”
– R. Albert Mohler, Jr., president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

“This book has totally changed the way I think. I recommend it to any and every teen who has a desire to turn their life around and make a difference.”
– Ashley W., age 13, Georgia

“Alex and Brett capture the passion and potential of our generation perfectly in this book. In Do Hard Thingsthey encourage us to go above and beyond the status quo in everything from schoolwork to serving the poor. This is a truly unique and sorely needed book.”
– Zach Hunter, author of Be the Change and Generation Change

“This book is amazing. It changes your whole way of thinking. I believe that every single teen needs to buy a copy of this book. Thanks, Alex and Brett for challenging us!”
– Stacie L., age 15, Kentucky

“This is an important book. And not just for those wanting to launch successfully into adulthood, but also for discontent twenty- and thirty-somethings who long to be catapulted into significance.”
– Ted Slater, editor of Boundless, Focus on the Family

“I’m not exactly a teenager anymore. But as I was reading I began to see how this can apply to anyone. It’s never too late to start. I absolutely cannot wait to suggest this book to the ‘kidults’ in my life.”
– Matt R., age 26, Georgia

“Alex and Brett are the real deal and Do Hard Things is a real wake up call, not just for young people, but for all God’s people. I can’t recommend it highly enough.”
– Shannon Ethridge, best-selling author of the Every Woman’s Battle series

“This book is a wake up call to a generation that is down in the dumps. It’s like a coach screaming from the sidelines, ‘You can do it!!!’. I’d recommend it to anyone, young or old.”
– Douglas A., age 17, England

“Do Hard Things is the textbook for anyone who works with teens; it’s a philosophical and foundational must-read.”
– Timothy Eldred, executive director of Christian Endeavor International

Rocking A World of Low Expectations April 22, 2008
By Tim Challies TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:HardcoverI’ve often reflected on something I experienced when I was studying in college. With a busy semester ahead of me, I decided to take “Death and Dying,” an elective that had the reputation of being an exceptionally easy course (a “bird course” we called it back then). On the first day we arrived in the lecture hall, the professor handed out a reading list and what he assured us were the lecture notes for the entire course. With these in hand, we were told, there was little use in showing up for the rest of the year unless we were really and truly interested in the subject matter. It was not a difficult course, he said, and we could probably do fine if we just turned in the assignments and showed up to write the exam. Needless to say, most of us took this as an opportunity to have an evening to ourselves each week rather than actually sitting through long and boring lectures on a subject that was of little interest. Also needless to say, most of us earned very poor grades. I’ve contrasted this in my mind to courses where the professor challenged us on the first day that his would be an exceedingly difficult course and one that would require the best we had. With such a challenge, many students rose to the challenge. Knowing that expectations were high and knowing that we faced a long and difficult fight, we reacted by putting out more effort and ultimately by doing better.

High expectations, it seems, often results in greater performance. Tragically, we live at a time where we expect very little of teenagers. The teen years, we seem to think, are a time where we can and must expect little. If our teenagers manage to avoid dangerous drugs, manage to avoid pregnancy and manage to avoid completely derailing their lives, we consider these years a success. We maintain low expectations and are not surprised when teenagers deliver very little.

Do Hard Things is a book for teens–and a distinctly different kind of book for teens. “Check online or walk through your local bookstore. You’ll find plenty of books written by fortysomethings who, like, totally understand what it’s like being a teenager. You’ll find a lot of cheap, throwaway books for teens, because young people today aren’t supposed to care about books, or to see any reason to keep them around. And you’ll find a wide selection of books where you never have to read anything twice–because the message is dumbed down. Like, just for you.” But this book is a challenging book, and one written by teens and for teens. It is written by Brett and Alex Harris, whose greatest claim to fame (other than being the younger brothers of Joshua Harris) is being the minds behind The Rebelution–one of the internet’s most popular sites for teens and now a series of conferences. This book continues the message they’ve been communicating in every other forum.

That message is simple but far too often overlooked in society today: rebel against low expectations. They cast a vision of a better way of doing the teen years in which so many teens have been “conditioned to believe what is false, to stop when things feel hard, and to miss out on God’s incredible purpose for [the] teen years.” They look at five kinds of hard–five different kinds of hard things that can challenge the expectations of those around them: things that are outside of your comfort zone, things that are beyond what is expected or required, things that are too big to accomplish alone, things that don’t earn an immediate pay off and things that challenge the cultural norm. They describe each of these through stories and examples drawn primarily from their lives and from the lives of other “rebelutionaries” who have shared their stories with the authors.

Though this book is targeted squarely at teens, I can’t deny that the message rubbed off even on this reader whose teen years are far behind. There is something inspiring in watching teens shake off the low expectations that plague their lives and there is something in it that makes me want to examine where I may also have fallen prey to low expectations. Writing as the proud older brother of these authors, Joshua Harris says truly that “Every former teen needs this book, too. I know I do. There’s no age-limit on the Rebelution. It’s never to late to do hard things.”

For too long our expectations of teens, and their expectations of themselves, have been far too low. In Do Hard Things Alex and Brett Harris rebel against low expectations and encourage their peers to meet the challenge of doing tough things for God’s sake and for God’s glory. I wish I could have read this book when I was a teen. I’m glad that my children will have the opportunity. I pray it will stir them and stir a whole generation of young people, to use their teen years to do the hard things God calls them to do. And I pray that the teen years are only the beginning, only the foundation, of lives lived to the glory of God.

Fantastic book — great graduation gift! April 15, 2008
By Cara Putman VINE™ VOICE
Format:HardcoverThis book is incredible. Many of us have seen teens, young adults, even thirty-somethings who are floundering through life. They can’t seem to get any traction. Frankly, this approach to life drives my crazy, because I live on the other extreme. The Harris twins pinpoint the problem as a plague of low expectations when we’re teenagers. As a result, we aren’t trained to push ourselves and ask how God can use us — especially during our teen years.

The verse that motivates their ministry is I Timothy 4:12. I smiled when I saw that as it was my life verse until I was 30 and decided I might need a different verse since I wasn’t exactly a youth anymore. I’ve often wondered what my parents did or didn’t do that made me believe anything I wanted to do/be was possible if it lined up with God’s Word and will.

There was an expectation that everything was training. The teen years weren’t a time to goof off. Instead, they were a time to prove myself and gain increasing independence as I proved myself faithful. Everything I’ve done, accomplished, am doing is a direct result of that philosophy.

In a sense this is exactly what Do Hard Things is about. It challenges teens to intentionally do 5 kinds of hard things:

1. Things that are outside your comfort zone.
2. Things that go beyond what is expected or required.
3. Things that are too big to accomplish alone.
4. Things that don’t earn an immediate payoff.
5. Things that challenge the cultural norm.

We’d all benefit from applying those principles to our lives. But how much better if we taught them to young people. I’ve talked about this book since starting it. Eric is lined up to read it. I’ll be giving it as graduation gifts. And it will land in my children’s hands by the time they are twelve, so we can fully discuss and apply these principles in their lives.

Fantastic Bible Study September 4, 2005
By Colleen
Format:PaperbackI begame a Beth Moore groupie with her first Bible Study on the Old Testiment Tabernacle and have followed her with each successive study that she has written. I’ve also traveled to see her speak, and gone to a similcast or two. That’s the kind of lady she is. If you read her, you’ll love her too, and be trying your best to keep up with her.

This study did not, at the time it was released, have videos to accompany it, so I consequently passed it over and moved on to the next one. I think it’s been more than a year now that Beth finally put videos to this study and made it available as an online study. I completed it last year. It is excellent, as is all her stuff.

I recommend it HIGHLY for the working woman, like me, who hardly has the time to get the laundry done or bills paid on time. You can do each lesson at whatever pace you want and when you have finally completed it then you can log on and watch the video. It took me about 8 months to complete this 10-week study at my own pace. Although I missed the fellowship of the ladies in sharing our stories and meeting in person, it was still very rewarding to have spent the time in God’s word. I still benefited from THAT immensely. ( To sign up for the online study go to: […])

You can’t do a Beth Moore study without growing closer to Jesus and wanting to have the relationship with HIM that Beth has with HIM. She actually has two available online, this one and BELIEVING GOD.

In this remarkable New York Times bestseller, Joel Osteen offers unique insights and encouragement that will help readers overcome every obstacle in their lives.

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com Review
Houston televangelist Joel Osteen is well qualified to write this book, having used the seven principles he shares to achieve his own “rags-to-riches” story. At the heart of Osteen’s message is that achieving a successful, prosperous life of fulfillment can only occur when we stop worrying about the past or future to make the most of each present moment by using our God-given strengths and talents to achieve our goals. The key to doing so are the seven steps Osteen outlines: Enlarge Your Vision, Develop a Healthy Self-Image, Discover the Power of Your Thoughts and Words, Let go of the Past, Find Strength Through Adversity, Live to Give, and Choose to Be Happy. Mixing biblical teachings with his own personal experiences, Osteen explains each of these seven steps in an encouraging, optimistic manner that makes them accessible to anyone interested in principles of personal growth. Although written with a Christian slant, the seven steps Osteen shares will have value to anyone wanting to know more about practical steps of self-betterment, regardless of their denomination.–Larry Trivieri Jr.
From Publishers Weekly
Houston megachurch pastor and inspirational TV host Osteen offers an overblown and redundant self-help debut. Many Christian readers will undoubtedly be put off by the book’s shallow name-it-and-claim-it theology; although the first chapter claims that “we serve the God that created the universe,” the book as a rule suggests the reverse: it’s a treatise on how to get God to serve the demands of self-centered individuals. Osteen tells readers that God wants them to prosper, offering examples of obtaining an elegant mansion or a larger salary (“don’t ever get satisfied with where you are,” he cautions). In seven parts, he details how readers should enlarge their vision, develop self-esteem, discover the power of thought, let go of the past, find strength through adversity, give back to others and choose to be happy. The section on giving comes as too little, too late—Osteen’s message to remember others and “get your mind off yourself” flies in the face of the previous 200 pages. There are some good pockets of advice, such as letting go of past hurts and avoiding bitterness. Editorially, the book would have packed more of a punch if a third of its repetitive slogans and stories had been pruned. Theologically, its materialism and superficial portrayal of God as the granter of earthly wishes will alienate many Christian readers who can imagine a much bigger God.

Biography
Joel Osteen is a native Texan and the Pastor of Lakewood Church, which according to Church Growth Today is America’s largest and fastest growing church with over 38,000 attendees. On July 16, 2005 after completing $95 million dollars in renovations, Joel moved Lakewood Church into its new 16,000 seat home — the former Compaq Center which is now the largest regularly-used worship center in the United States. According to Nielsen Media Research, Joel is the most watched inspirational figure in America. His weekly sermon is broadcast into television markets across the U.S. where it is viewed by seven million Americans each week and more than 20 million each month. His weekly broadcast is also seen in almost 100 nations around the world. In 2004 his first book, Your Best Life Now was released by Time Warner debuting at the top of the New York Times Bestsellers List and quickly rising to #1. It remained on the New York Times Bestseller for more than 2 years and has sold more than 4 million copies. Most recently, Joel was named as one of Barbara Walters’ “10 Most Fascinating People of 2006” and he was selected as the “Most Influential Christian in 2006” by the readers of Church Report Magazine. The son of John Osteen — a highly respected minister of the Gospel and the founder of Lakewood Church — Joel attended Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma where he studied radio and television communications. In 1982, Joel returned to Houston and founded Lakewood’s television ministry where he produced John Osteen’s televised sermons for 17 years until January 1999 when his father passed away. For many years John Osteen encouraged Joel to preach, but he always declined preferring to work behind the scenes. In early 1999, Joel felt compelled to accept his father’s invitation and he preached his first sermon on January 17th of that year. Little did anyone know that would be the last Sunday of John Osteen’s life. Two weeks later Joel began preaching and later that year was installed as the new Senior Pastor of Lakewood Church. Almost immediately, weekly attendance began to grow at an extraordinary rate and, in 2005 Joel moved Lakewood Church into its present location, the former Compaq Center, a 16,000 seat arena that was once home to the Houston Rockets professional basketball team. Now, with his wife Victoria and the leadership staff of Lakewood, this innovative church is poised for the new millennium. Joel’s extraordinary success can be found in his core message: That our God is a good God who desires to bless those who are obedient and faithful to Him through Jesus Christ. It is Joel’s deepest desire that his own life be an example of that principle and that everyone who hears this message of hope and encouragement would choose to accept God’s goodness and mercy and to become all that God wants them to be.

Don’t dismiss its simplicity October 2, 2006
By D. Wilburn
Format:Audio CDI am a lifelong Christian and have read and studied the Word from many angles and sources over the years.

I don’t know if it was just timing, or what, but I couldn’t help but notice this ‘happy preacher’ on TV. For years, I passed him by while scanning the channels, but I DID slowly begin to stop and listen- a little more each time. I was taken by Mr. Osteen’s simple messages, delivered with a humility and genuiness that I just don’t think can be faked. Anyway, I began to enjoy the half hour I spent with him on TV, but still couldn’t force myself to buy the book or even take his theology seriously for that matter – it was just ‘soul candy’ as far as I was concerned.

Finally, I gave in a little over a year ago and bought the book. I coincidentally began a new job that included a company paid daily bus pass. I began to read a chapter a day during my commute. I have now read this book at least a dozen times. Yes, it still has that candy-like comfort, but beyond that I have learned to respect the man and his theology. To those who cast it off as ‘name it and claim drivel’, I can only say that I receive a much deeper message from his words. Maybe it’s because I’ve never been a part of anything remotely like the ‘name and claim’ theology, or perhaps it’s because I’d like to believe that my own theology is deeper and therefore believe that his is too. What I’ll say is that while I have learned to appreciate how much God DOES love me and how much he wants for me, I realize that monetary wealth is just one of many types of wealth that’s being referred to in the book. And I hear the distinction loud and clear in his words. But I don’t think that’s necessarily his point. I don’t hear him PROMISING good things in this book. What I hear (and what makes the difference for me personally) is simply, – what kind of attitude are you going to have as you go through life (regardless of outcomes)? Personally, while I can’t say that his theology is totally supported in every detail by scripture, I can’t say that it contradicts it either, and it helps me immensely. Call it “Positve Thinking”. Call it what you want. It’s working for me and I can see its (positive) effect on me, my life and those I love and live with each day.

Life changing June 4, 2005
By Carolyn R. Scheidies
Format:HardcoverI don’t even know where to begin on this book. There was a time I understood the principles Osteen shares. I believed them, held to them firmly, until life happened, until exhaustion and opportunities denied or lost sapped away that faith. Until I read this book, I hadn’t realized how far I’d drifted from basics I knew were true and that made a positive difference. I hadn’t realized how negative some of my attitudes had become, attitudes I began to see reflected in my adult children.

Osteen brought me back to center, to my foundation: God is good; He loves me and wants the very best for me. He also wants me to trust Him, even in when bad things happen. God desires to bless, but my negative choices and attitudes can block that blessing. No longer.

Osteen makes clear … (…)

The Fine Line October 23, 2004
By Pete Smith
Format:HardcoverWhat I think many people miss about Joel Osteen’s message (as well as the spelling of his name) is the fine line between a name-it and claim-it theology and the simple message of the Bible that God loves you. If God loves you and sent His Son to die for you (the Christian Gospel), then why would He just want Christian ministers to focus on suffering and sin instead of having a postive attitude of faith and trusting God for more. “If a earthly father gives good gifts…”

I think Joel believes that Jesus is the way, the truth and the life, that there is only one way to heaven and that sin and the battle of the flesh is important, but just doesn’t focus on those things – Lord knows there are plenty of hell fire and damnation preachers out there.

Joel doesn’t say that if you claim something in Jesus name you’ll get it. Instead, he says to have faith that God will bring you through your circumstances and wants good things for you. “Faith is the substance of things hoped for…” We’ve lost the hope that we should get from God’s love. It is after all GOOD news.

Many people (and several reviewers) criticize Joel for not being overtly evangelistic to save souls or not preaching more on sin. Funny how few ministries are seeing the thousands come to the Christian faith like are coming through Joel’s church, television programs and events and even more find the encouragement to change their lives for the better. Perhaps honey does work better than vinegar?

As far as being applicable to people of other faiths or no faith at all, truth is truth. If I don’t touch the flame, I don’t get burned whether I’m a Christian or not.

In a world full of uncertainty, it is good to have a messenger who will inspire us to Live Our Best Lives Now! A nation in the war on terror needs it.

Is it possible…

That there exists an ancient mystery that holds the secret of America’s future?
That this mystery lies behind everything from 9/11 to the collapse of the global economy?
That ancient harbingers of judgment are now manifesting in America?
That God is sending America a prophetic message of what is yet to come?

Before its end as a nation, there appeared in ancient Israel nine specific warnings and omens of national destruction – These same nine Harbingers are now manifesting in America with profound ramifications for America’s future and end-time prophecy.

Hidden in an ancient biblical prophecy from Isaiah, the mysteries revealed in The Harbinger are so precise that they foretell recent American events down to the exact days… the 3,000-year-old mystery that revealed the exact date of the stock market collapse of 2008… the ancient prophecy that was proclaimed from the floor of the US Senate and then came true…and more. The revelations are so specific that even the most hardened skeptic will find it hard to put down. Though it sounds like the plot of a Hollywood thriller – IT’S REAL.

The prophetic mysteries are factual but revealed through a riveting narrative the reader will find hard to put down. The Harbinger opens with the appearance of a man burdened with a message he has received from a mysterious figure called The Prophet. The Prophet has given him nine seals, each containing a message about America s future. As he tells of his encounters with the Prophet, from a skyscraper in New York City, to a rural mountaintop, to Capitol Hill, to Ground Zero, the mystery behind each seal is revealed. As the story unfolds, each revelation becomes another piece in a larger and larger puzzle, the ramifications of which are, even now, altering the course of America and the world.

Love is His nature; Justice is His necessity — We have been warned January 4, 2012
By L. Weeks
Format:PaperbackFull disclosure – I’ve been a member and/or attending Beth Israel under Jonathan Cahn’s leadership for a decade. I have never seen or read anyone that can unpack information with the facility he does. Having been familiar with much of the information and facts contained in The Harbinger through Rabbi Cahn’s sermons over the years, I am still blown away by the amount of seemingly new information in this book as well as the method and order of its revealing. He brilliantly unfolds this message that needs to be (and is) as resoundingly clear as can be: God is warning this country to turn back to Him. As anyone with ears to hear and eyes to see can tell, we are living in perilous times. This narrative and the true, checkable facts it is built around demonstrate that even in chaos, there is order … and that nothing happens (or will happen) apart from God’s allowance. He is in control.

If you doubt His being in control – or if you doubt the parallels between God’s dealings with ancient Israel and the events in America since and including 9/11, reading The Harbinger with an open mind will change that. Reading it with an open heart might just change your life.

Shalom

It’s time to wake up America! November 7, 2011
By Bigcheese
Format:Kindle Edition”The Harbinger” by Jonathan Cahn was written for a time such as this, mesmerizing and fascinating from beginning to end. In light of current events, this book is an eye opener for every American. The book is presented in a narrative fashion and uses scripture to demonstrate the ties between the destruction of ancient Israel and America. Anyone searching for answers in the midst of the chaos, unrest and fear that is prevalent in America today will find “The Harbinger” provides a glimmer of hope. Cahn offers these words from scripture “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14. This book surely is a wake up call for Americans to get on their knees and reclaim this great nation before it’s too late.

The Harbinger & 9/11. Ten Years after the first warning. September 7, 2011
By Dennis
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified PurchaseThe American Dream is looking more and more like a national nightmare. Ten years since 9/11 and our nation spirals ever more downward each day with millions looking for an answer to our future. If you have been questioning current events,The Harbinger provides the answers and a remedy.
The reader is taken on a journey that begins over two thousand years ago linking it with our nation today as Jonathan Cahn unlocks an ancient mystery linked to America and her future.
If you were sitting in a jury box, with America on trial, and listened to the facts presented by the author, the only verdict possible is GUILTY-beyond a reasonable doubt.
It is not too late for our nation and its people to self-correct. The warning has been sent. Ignore it at your own peril.

Book Description
Publication Date:July 4, 2012
The summer of 2012 has become the Summer of 43—as in the summer of R.A. Dickey, the 37-year-old knuckleball pitcher who wears Number 43 on the mound for the New York Mets.

As his knuckleballs flutter and drop through the strike zone, befuddling batters and producing a 12–1 record by the All Star break, Dickey has become one of the greatest feel-good stories of baseball history: the man who found redemption, after years of adversity, by mastering one of the strangest and most difficult pitches in the game.

But it’s not just his own redemption that R.A. Dickey has discovered. After the Days of Steroids—the era when baseball went brazen mad and lost itself in a noonday sin—America’s game has needed a new narrative. Baseball has been desperate for a better storyline, a new shaping tale. Baseball has needed, for those who love the game, a way to signal its own redemption and its return to the hearts of baseball fans.

A little faith in God—and thereby, a little faith in himself—coupled with years of work, and R.A. Dickey’s surrender to the mysteries of the knuckleball has given the man another chance at the greatness that eluded him early in his career. Given baseball itself another chance, for that matter, and promised us all that second chances really do come around in this life.

In “The Summer of 43,” the widely published essayist and poet Joseph Bottum takes up this story with verve and skill. The bestselling author of “The Gospel According to Tim” and “The Christmas Plains,” he is, as the essayist Andrew Ferguson has noted “one of America’s most gifted writers, with a perfect ear and a matchless style.” And in his account of R.A. Dickey, Bottum uncovers both the tragedy and the comedy of baseball—and the joy of a story like R.A. Dickey’s.

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com Review
Having penned the popular Kindle Single The Gospel According to Tim (Tebow), Joseph Bottum knows his way around the nexus of faith and sports. In The Summer of 43, he would have us believe that baseball is a moral game. Who knew? At one end of the spectrum, I suppose, are those comedians who insist that performance-enhancing drugs should be mandatory for all athletes, and at the other, there’s Bottum’s taxonomical assignment of various pitches into “moral categories.” All of which brings us to one R.A. Dickey (the number 43 of the title), whose increasingly unhittable knuckleball has taken Major League Baseball circa 2012 by storm, providing–Bottum argues–the long-awaited antidote to a decade-plus doping story that brought baseball all the way to Congress. Nevertheless, Bottum’s passionate essay is more than a purist’s screed on “steroids, the sin against which R.A. Dickey is throwing his knuckleball this year.” It’s also a lofty testament to the dizzying emotional and metaphorical heights that some fans still find in the game. –Jason Kirk

Grand slam July 6, 2012
By Dr. Syntax
Format:Kindle EditionThis is a wonderfully descriptive, authoritative picture of the mysteries of the knuckleball and the resurgence of #43’s career after concentrating on regularly hurling that flabbergasting pitch. A fascinating story very well told.

Art of Baseball July 6, 2012
By Denise L. Wiktor
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified PurchaseI love baseball, have loved it since I was young and would hang with my father as he puttered and listened to baseball. He would watch golf on TV but never baseball, it had to be listened to. Of course that was a time when baseball commentary was king. Joseph Bottum’s essay is more for the fan of the ART of baseball, not the mere statistician. So for me the description of the Miamiacs and their stadium I loved. It is also about the paid of the steroid scandals and how it has made us doubt who is playing. Only a pitcher, it seems to me, can avoid that and we get a animated description of how the knuckle ball and one pitcher can give us faith in the game again, to redeem it.

I do take one exception, in the part where he describes “Before 1998, only fifteen players over the previous hundred years of baseball had managed 500 home runs in a career.” he fails to mention the one bone of contention I do have with statistics, which there are more games in a season that there used to be so the record (with or without drugs) has more of an opportunity to be broken.

I enjoyed the essay and I think that anyone who likes the sport of baseball, the art of baseball will enjoy it too with the colorful and descriptive passages, which, by his own admission, meander. The meandering gives context and emotion to the narrative. All for $1.99.

The intersection of faith and baseball in a compelling essay July 6, 2012
By Robert C. Ross TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified PurchaseJoseph Bottum has written a good review of his own essay, which appears for free on his Blog on the CatholicVote website:

“I’m not sure when the editors for the Kindle Singles elected me their go-to guy for any story about the intersection of sports and religion, but it’s fun to write on these topics: first Tebow and now Dickey. And the thesis is one I think I’m right to hold: ‘A fastball is a power pitch. A curveball is an artist’s pitch. And a knuckleball — ah, yes, a knuckleball is a pitch of faith.’

“Along the way, R.A. Dickey is showing us the 2012 redemption of baseball from the Days of Steroids: the era in which the game went brazen mad and lost itself in a noonday sin. If you haven’t been aware of Dickey’s story — and, even more, if you haven’t watched him pitch, throwing his fluttering knuckleball past the hitters of the National League — now’s the time to start. It’s like watching faith on the fly.”

After reflecting on his essay for 24 hours (and deleting my original ungenerous review), here is one explanation for why the editors made the choice of this essay:

First, Joseph Bottum is a wonderful writer, and this essay is as good as his earlier effort The Gospel According to Tim (Kindle Single) on the intersection between sports and religion. (For me, the baseball part of The Summer of 43 was stronger than the religion part, whereas in The Gospel According to Tim the faith part was stronger than the football part.)

Second, the baseball parts of the essay are absolutely superb. Bottum summarizes several of the major scandals that have so rocked baseball over the past several years, most dealing with drugs and the hypocrisy of owners and to a certain extent the players. He is absolutely brilliant describing the various basic pitches, especially the knuckleball, that most unpredictable of all pitches, and the one that has garnered some of the best quotations that exist in the long lore of baseball.

Bottum also writes a compelling summary of Dickey’s past career and makes a strong case for why and how Dickey’s faith has enabled him to grow from a marginal pitcher into, at the moment, one of the very best in baseball. And, he shows how fleeting that excellence may be, especially with a pitch that is so unpredictable, not only for the hitter or the catcher, but for the pitcher as well.

Fate always plays a part in baseball; as Bottum writes in this same blog entry: “Dickey was close to a disaster [in a game the Mets stole from the Phillies], giving up a career high of 11 hits and 5 runs in 7 innings. Not, in other words, the Dickey we’ve been seeing–who just had one of the best months of any pitcher in baseball history: 5-0 for June, with a 0.93 ERA and the first back-to-back one-hitters in 25 years. In the event, for the second time in three starts, his teammates’ heroics in the ninth brought a win for the Mets’ reliever and saved Dickey from recording what would have been his first loss since April 13.”

There is a great deal of interest here, not only for folks who may not know too much about baseball, but also for folks like me who have been a baseball fan for over 50 years.

Robert C. Ross
July 2012

PS: I’ve substantially revised this review, and have re-purchased the essay — it resides in my memory, like many other essays Bottum has written.

It is well worth following Bottum on his blog, and taking a look at some of his poetry. I’ve purchased a copy of his The Second Spring, which is a collection of twenty-four poems set to fairly simple music. For folks without tin ears, they probably are easy to sing, but for me, they are much more fun to recite aloud. Some of them are set in Appalachia, and these sound particularly good on my hikes in the Ramapos. R.

A devotional my kids ASK me to read each night February 3, 2009
By Sam & Julia’s mom
Format:HardcoverIf you want your children to connect their daily lives to Biblical principals in language your preschooler will understand, then this is the book for you. The author, a speaker and writer for MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) grabbed my son’s attention from the first sentence. The beauty of the short, but sweet devotions is that they are interactive. Simple questions get right to the heart of the day’s story and offer a chance for your child to share their feelings.

Here’s an example from December 27th’s devotional titled, “Win or Lose”

“Parker and Jack are having a snowball fight. Each boy hopes he will win! Do you like to win when you play games? Everyone likes to win. But when you play games, everyone loses now and then. Did you know there is something you can never lose? You can never loes God’s love. No matter who may be against you. God will always be on your side.”

Notice that this is a Winter story? I’ve found that the more relevant the situation the more my son get’s out of our devotional time. The day about “Working for Fun” caught his attention since he loves to bake cookies:

“Kaitlyn, Jack and Parker are making Christmas cookies. It will take a lot of work. But when the cookies are done, they will get a reward – they’ll have cookies to eat together! The Bible says that hard work often brings happy rewards. When the kids eat their cookies, do you think they will be happy they worked so hard?”

Seeds are being planted in my son and that makes me one happy Mama! But what about actual scripture verses, you ask? Not to worry! At the bottom of each page is a Bible verse and a prayer. The prayers rhymes, which I love. I have my son repeat every few words after me.

“Lord, when there’s work that needs to be done, help me remember that work can be fun. (December 18th’s Working for Fun devotional)”

Devotions written as if Jesus is speaking directly to a child’s heart.

Based on her original Jesus Calling, this version has been adapted in a language and fashion that kids and tweens can relate to their everyday lives.

After many years of writing in her prayer journal, missionary Sarah Young decided to listen to God with pen in hand, writing down what she believed He was saying to her through Scripture. Others were blessed as she shared her writings, until people all over the world were using her devotionals. They are written from Jesus’ point of view, thus the title Jesus Calling. It is Sarah’s fervent prayer that our Savior may bless readers, and now young readers, with His presence and His peace in ever deeper measure.

Good material, Strange Presentation… October 19, 2010
By Lorrie Miller
Format:HardcoverThis devotional book for kids is filled with a year’s worth of devotions–one each day! They are dated with the day of the year, but not the day of the week–so it can be used year after year (a great thing, in my opinion because God speaks to us in new ways from the same passage, many times!)

The devotions contain a short scripture printed at the top and a one page message taken from the theme verse. Scripture references follow for further study–a great thing for older children, especially! I used the devotional book with my own four children and found the short verse and message appropriate for the kids aged five through ten (my three year old’s attention span was much too short!) I, as an adult, also really appreciated the messages and often found God speaking to my heart through them!

The one thing I disliked about this book is that it is written from the first person–as if Jesus himself is speaking the words in the devotional thought. This was really confusing for my kids, who kept asking if Jesus wrote this or said this. It was difficult to explain that it was a woman who wrote it from the perspective of Jesus. I ended up changing it to read from the third person point of view instead and this seemed to be much better understood (and I felt more comfortable with it, too, since they really are not the words of Jesus!)

Overall, I enjoyed this book that Booksneeze sent to me for free to review!

Refreshing Reminders of Encouragement December 22, 2010
By Andrea VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What’s this?)This is a book of 365 devotions, one for each day of the year. Each devotion is wonderful – they deal with things such as trusting God, not people-pleasing, knowing you’re good enough, being thankful, God’s comfort, God’s promises, spending time with God, just to name a few.

This book is wonderful, because of all the negative impact and discouragement we all get in the world, we need to be reminded Who loves us and keeps us taken care of. There are Bible verses to back up each devotion.

Even though this book says “for kids”, I feel that adults can also benefit from it. Even adults need encouragement, sometimes even more so than kids. Adults are the ones who have to worry about certain things that kids don’t. And the way a lot of “adult” inpirational books are written, a lot of adults don’t have the time or energy to read them. But this one is written in such a way that does not require a lot of time or energy. And, I don’t think it is written all that “kiddy”. An adult (or a kid) can read it at their leisure, take as many or as few “days” each day. Even if you only read one “day” a day, it will only take you a year to read the book, and get a lot of encouragement along the way, being reminded that God loves you, and you don’t have to worry about anything but Him.

I love this whole book, and I could actually say that all the “days” are my favorites. But one “day” in particular that I consider one of my favorites, is September 7: “I Set You Free”, in which we are encouraged to free ourselves from the guilt of our past mistakes/sins.

In this time of discouragement and evil, this book is refreshing and encouraging, regardless of your age. Kids and adults, I highly recommend this book.

A Good Place to Start September 30, 2010
By John A. Bird
Format:HardcoverThe habit of spending time with the Lord on a daily basis cannot be formed too early. For children who need a good place to start, Tama Fortner’s adaptation of Sarah Young’s Jesus Calling may be the perfect book.

Jesus Calling is a 365 day devotional for kids. Each devotion begins with a verse followed by commentary written in first person, as if Jesus were speaking directly to the child:

“Talk to Me about your struggles, about the times when you feel that you just aren’t good enough. Little by little, I will take those struggles and turn them to strengths.”

Each devotion also includes suggested Scripture passages for further reading.

Young’s writings are comforting, full of practical help, and promote worship. Jesus is often presented as a friend–“I am your best Friend–pour out your heart to Me,”–but He is also presented as the Sovereign King. This adaptation by Tama Fortner strikes the perfect balance for children.

Jesus Calling is probably most suitable for children between the ages of 6 and 12. Older children will also benefit from it, but it may be too advanced for younger children. We have started using it during our family devotional time. It makes a great addition.

I received a complimentary copy of this book through the Thomas Nelson Booksneeze program.

‘The Jesus Storybook Bible is unlike any other storybook. True, that’s to be expected when you combine the mesmerizing illustrations of Jago and the award-winning writing of Sally Lloyd-Jones, a Brit with an uncanny knack for storytelling. Not only is each story as vividly illustrated as it is portrayed, but also each tale is telling one Big Story—the Story of Jesus. Even the Old Testament stories of ‘The young hero and the horrible giant’ and ‘Daniel and the scary sleepover’ come full circle to Jesus, the greatest Hero, King, Lover and Rescuer the world has ever known. — More to Life Magazine

(More to Life Magazine )

”The Jesus Storybook Bible: Every Story Whispers His Name’ disproves the adage that you can’t judge a book by its cover. Jago’s award-winning cover art is a foretaste of the whimsically insightful and richly colored drawings that await you on every one of the book’s 351 pages. The illustrations alone are worth the price of the book….Jago the illustrator, and Sally Lloyd-Jones the author, are a good pair. She brings the same creativity and sense of humor to her telling of the Bible’s stories….But Lloyd-Jones’s writing isn’t cutesy. She has a grasp of the profound. How does one explain to a child the agony of Jesus in Gethsemane, and his prayer of surrender to his Father? Lloyd-Jones does it as well as any biblical commentator….The title and subtitle are even better than the book’s delightful illustrations and narrative — because they provide, in one deft stroke, the interpretive key that unlocks the meaning of the whole Bible. ‘The Jesus Storybook Bible’ says it all: The Scriptures are not merely a collection of stories designed to teach moral lessons. As Jesus explained to the men walking the road to Emmaus on Resurrection Sunday, the whole Bible is about Jesus. In the words of the subtitle, every story whispers his name….Lloyd-Jones manages to show again and again the presence of Christ in all the Old Testament Scriptures, and the presence of the Old Testament Scriptures in the life of Christ.’ — Christianity Today

The Jesus Storybook Bible is, in my opinion, one of the best resources available to help both children and adults see the Jesus-centered story line of the Bible. Tullian Tchividjian , Senior Pastor of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church — PCA, Fort Lauderdale, FL.

The quality and originality of this retelling of the Bible is impressive. Difficult concepts for children are clearly explained within the context of their stories. The text blends perfectly with the strong color and texture of the illustrations, which are original and lively and a million miles from ‘traditional’. The book, enhanced by the audio retelling will appeal to all children, not just those from a Christian background. — School Library Journal UK

Review
‘I would urge not just families with young children to get this book, but every Christian–from pew warmers, to ministry leaders, seminarians and even theologians! Sally Lloyd-Jones has captured the heart of what it means to find Christ in all the scriptures, and has made clear even to little children that all God’s revelation has been about Jesus from the beginning–a truth not all that commonly recognized even among the very learned.’ — Dr. Tim Keller, Redeemer, NY, NY

Wow! and Wow! October 12, 2009
By Elyse Fitzpatrick
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified PurchaseAs a grandmother of six, I’m always on the search for edifying Christ-centered material, which is why I bought the Jesus Storybook Bible for my little darlings…Then I heard David Suchet’s reading of it and this wonderful book, which had already earned a “Wow!” from me got another really big “Wow!”…and so, it’s a good thing that I can order with one-click because I ordered copies for the kids (again!) and for my pal the preschool teacher and for…and for…
Really, Suchet’s readings made these stories spring to life and I’ve put them on my MP3 player and listen in the grocery store and at night when I can’t sleep and when I’m on the airplane and need to be reminded of God’s great love for me in Christ Jesus, my Rescuer.
You really must get this — even if you don’t have little ones. The child He calls you as needs to hear the story again and again.

I love, love, love this children’s Bible! October 27, 2009
By Sam K.
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified PurchaseI got this last week and we’ve been listening to the stories in the car. Everyone is captivated! The car gets so quiet so we can all listen (adults and kids alike). The narrator did a wonderful job. I’ve given out well over a dozen copies of the Jesus Storybook Bible and now I will most definitely switch to buying and gifting the Deluxe Edition.

Best Children’s Bible Out there March 18, 2010
By Dana E. Ellis
Format:HardcoverThe Deluxe Edition is a complete package of the reading on CDs and a read-along book. And, since we’ve put the girls to bed and down for naps with books on CDs since they were old enough to hold the book, I knew this set would be right up their alley. I must admit that when I received the book, just before Christmas, I set Emma up with the book and CD’s and saved my reading with her for something that she couldn’t do on her own. However, when I picked the book up to review, I decided that it was something that we needed to read together.

It is a nice bonus that the reader is David Suchet, one of Great Britain’s most distinguished actors, best known for playing Agatha Christie’s super-sleuth, Hercule Poirot. Since Emma finds a British accent as one of the upmost pleasurable things in life (apparently all princesses have British accents), she was hooked upon hearing the first lines of the introduction..

Illustrated by award winning, Jago, the illustrations are whimsical interpretations that serve to help bring the stories alive. While I know that illustrations are an important part of wrapping children into a book, personally, I am typically drawn to the words without paying much attention to the illustrations. However, Jago’s illustrations are so truly captivating and compliment the story so well, that I found myself reading the story through the pictures before I even began reading the words. I also found myself flipping back through to admire his artwork (something I do very rarely).

Those elements alone are worth the cost of the book. But, most surprisingly, I found the most beautiful description of the way that I want my children to view the Bible, right within the first pages of the book.

It’s taken all of my will power not to write the whole introduction right here and now. But, please allow me to share just a couple of pieces in which Sally Lloyd-Jones seemed to have looked straight into my heart and somehow put the passion that I have for my children to know God as a loving and compassionate father into words that I had not yet found.

Sally Lloyd-Jones writes:
“The Bible isn’t mainly about you and what you should be doing. It’s about God and what he has done.”

“Now, some people think the Bible is a book of rules, telling you what you should and shouldn’t do. The Bible certainly does have some rules in it. They show you how life works best. But the Bible isn’t mainly about you and what you should be doing. It’s about God and what he has done.

Other people think the Bible is a book of heroes, showing you people you should copy. The Bible does have some heroes in it, but (as you’ll soon find out) most of the people in the Bible aren’t heroes at all. They make some big mistakes (sometimes on purpose), they get afraid and run away. At times, they’re downright mean.

No, the Bible isn’t a book of rules, or a book of heroes. The Bible is most of all a Story. It’s an adventure story about a young Hero who comes from a far country to win back his lost treasure. It’s a love story about a brave Prince who leaves his palace, his throne-everything-to rescues the ones he loves. It’s like the most wonderful of fairy tales that has come true in real life”.

I completely agree with Dr. Tim Keller’s endorsement of the book below:

“I would urge not just families with young children to get this book, but every Christian–from pew warmers, to ministry leaders, seminarians and even theologians! Sally Lloyd-Jones has captured the heart of what it means to find Christ in all the scriptures, and has made clear even to little children that all God’s revelation has been about Jesus from the beginning–a truth not all that commonly recognized even among the very learned.” — Dr. Tim Keller, Redeemer, NY, NY

Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified PurchaseAt the same time that Dr. Mary Neal was drowning in a river in Chile, her husband, Bill, appeared to me in a dream. Bill is an old friend of mine from high school. We had shared many adventures and confidences over the years, but neither he nor any other friend had ever stared at me in a dream and woke me up. I shook it off at the time, only to learn a few days or weeks later why I had seen him.

The story of her experiences from the drowning, through the repeated revivals and her ultimate survival are the events upon which this book is anchored. But the meat and meaning of it are in the unfolding of her life as guided and protected by her God. I’m obviously no disinterested party. Skeptics can be reassured by my report that if it came from Mary’s pen, it will be the truth and the whole truth. I doubt, however, that her or anyone’s personal account can penetrate fully into the modern psyche. That is, into those who think that they need proof of what we call God. As an account of a brush with the Hereafter, here have been many others similar to it, and they’re well enough known to be used as shorthand in bad films.

What Mary and those like her have experienced are gifts from somewhere, given not just to them. She gives it back to us disguised as a simple offering. She doesn’t baffle the reader with melodrama, hyperbole, fantasy, or excessive adjectives. She tells her story in a concise & detailed way, with a voice of eloquent and unadorned sincerity. In this way, it’s easy to read and difficult to put down, vividly descriptive and completely convincing, humbling and inspiring.

Fortunately for us, she kept waking up in the middle of the night until she couldn’t keep from writing it down for us. The reason to read this remarkable account is witness, which is one of the few ways that we have left to hack a little hole in our jungle of unbelief.

Format:PaperbackIn our analytical, data driven world, we are lulled into the belief that we know it all, or at least we can research what we don’t know. That eliminates the leap of faith it takes to take part in many of the most rewarding experiences in life. If we spent time analyzing all the possible problems associated with experiences like having and raising children, getting married, moving to a new town and starting a career, most of us would stay in bed. Mary Neal has shown us that there is so much in our world that we can’t actually see, but must take a leap of faith and believe. Her story is told in such a way that we are drawn in and vicariously experience all that she went through. After finishing the book, it’s impossible not to continue to mentally revisit her experiences, and notice all that is holy in our own lives. This book shows you that faith comes in many forms, and can be strengthened through our interactions with those in our lives. It is hard to put this book down once you start it.

Just out of college and completely alone in the world, Maggie Montgomery has one shot left to save her life from an abyss of poverty and hopelessness. Clinging to the last shred of fuel and hope, she arrives at the mansion of Texas billionaire Conrad Ayers. Although Maggie is clearly not what Mr. Ayers and his wife have in mind for a nanny, they agree to hire her temporarily until they can find someone more appropriate to fill the position. However, Maggie’s whole world is about to be up-ended by two way-over-scheduled children and one incredibly handsome hired hand. As she struggles to fit into a world she was never made to fit in, Maggie wonders if she can ever learn to become a perfect version of herself so she can keep the job, or is she doomed to always be searching for a life she can never quite grasp?

Keith Ayers despises his life. As the son of Texas billionaire Conrad Ayers and the fiance to a Senator from Texas’ daughter, it looks great on the outside, but inside, he is dying. He would vastly prefer to manage and train his father’s racehorses. However, everyone else thinks that is beneath him. He needs to get into industry and build on his father’s success. Suffocating under the constrictions of his life, he meets Maggie who begins to teach him that wealth and power is not everything in this life. But can Keith defy the most powerful men in Texas to follow his heart?

An Unbelievable Intersection of Lives March 20, 2012
By Mary C. Findley
Format:Kindle EditionThis is the third contemporary romance I have read recently, and the second by a Christian writer. Normally I don’t read this genre because the stories tend to focus on the self-centered “sufferings” of a heroine who doesn’t have any real sufferings. I have been blessed, however, to find two out of three gems in the genre.
You know Maggie Montgomery has seen real trouble from the very beginning. But you also know she’s learned to “pray without ceasing” in the most down to earth sense. Don’t make the mistake of thinking this is “The Nanny” with tacked-on Christianity. This is no comedy. Grab your box of tissues and follow Maggie through her stunning discoveries and what people discover about her, themselves, and her God. Who becomes her only real friend? Someone who’s totally off-limits. Who does she teach to pray? Not just the sweet little four-year-old boy she cares for. Whose lives does she change? Almost the entire rest of the cast of the book.
I thought the scenes at church were a little strange. They never met a single church member. Didn’t even shake hands with the pastor or say his name. Some of the sermon illustrations were application rather than strictly correct interpretation, but the points made were easy to understand. The focus was on Maggie’s living faith, and that shined clear. Romantic tension seesaws through everything, but was a little repetitive in the way was portrayed sometimes.
The characters were well-rounded, even the secondary ones. Plenty of internal and external conflicts keep the reader going and guessing. It’s an excellent read with a resolution of so much more than just the impossible romance.

I Loved Deep in the Heart March 19, 2012
By Cindy
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified PurchaseWhat does forgiveness have to do with hurt, anger and scars from the past too ugly to be revealed? How can love wrap itself around grudges, secrets and the quest for monetary wealth until it’s the only thing that matters? Searching only for a job and a roof over her head, Maggie shows up at the door of the Ayers mansion alone, penniless and utterly dependent upon the mercy of the rich family too concerned about their own fortune to have compassion on such a thing as a human soul. How could they know that their lavish quest for worldly goods and social status is about to come crashing down around them at the selfless love and kindness of the lowly woman hired as their nanny?
Deep in the Heart is a gut-wrenching, tear-jerking story of forbidden yet undeniable romance between the one who has it all and the one who has nothing. And yet, which is which? Is it Keith, the handsome son of one of the richest men in Texas with racehorses to tend, a beautiful fiancée on his arm and a future of wealth and power at his fingertips? Or could it be Maggie, the girl with no money, no family, no home and yet possesses a heart of peace and fulfillment, brimming with love for others and for her God?
Once again, Staci reaches `deep in her heart’ to spill emotion onto the pages that pulls you into her story with a grasp that will not let go. Your heart will ache along with Maggie as she falls hopelessly in love with the man she can never have and along with Keith as he seeks to fill the void in his heart with things that can never satisfy. What twist of irony awaits Keith and Maggie that causes their pasts to collide with their futures in a way they never could have predicted?
Deep in the Heart is Staci Stallings at her finest. The memory of the anguish and joy poured out by her pen will remain in your heart long after the final page has been turned.

Product Description
The Samurai were soldiers of feudal Japan who dedicated their lives entirely to their lords. In fact, the very title of samurai means “one who serves.” Legends of their skill, sacrifice, and service have been passed down for hundreds of years. As Christians, we are called to be both servants and soldiers of Christ. As this book demonstrates, there is much we can learn from the teachings and example of these legendary servant-warriors of Japan. We can respond to the call of our Lord, Jesus Christ, as Christian Samurai.

Unique, Sound, and Very Practical August 22, 2007
By B. S. Copeland
Format:Paperback”If one were to say in a word what the condition of being a samurai is, its basis lies in seriously devoting one’s body and soul to his master…”

This quote, taken from Hagakure: The Book of the Samurai, appears on the back cover of WCS. As the quote illustrates, the teachings of the samurai are extremely relevant for Christians, for their single purpose in life was to serve their master and those around them. As the author points our in the book’s introduction, the title “samurai” literally means “one who serves.” The relevance of such a philosophy is obvious for Christians. We are called to deny ourselves and to serve God and our neighbor. However, in our selfish, individualistic culture, the idea of servant hood is entirely foreign to us and we tend to minimize the emphasis on the selfless nature of such servant hood.

The value of this book is in its ability to show us what true servant hood is by examples of the writings of the samurai of old. Of course, we have the perfect example of servant hood in Jesus Christ. Unfortunately, it seems like we mythologize his selflessness because of the fact that Jesus is God. Its true that he is God, and that we can’t live up to his perfect display of sacrifice is undeniable. Nonetheless, we are called to live by his example and promised that the trials we face by imitating his self-denial will mature us to be more like him. I’m afraid that we Westerners have trouble living by Christ’s example because the mythological nature that we attach to his servant hood. What would help us is to see examples of people throughout history who lived by the philosophy of being servants who deny themselves on a daily basis to better serve their masters. God has provided us such examples in the samurai of the feudal period of Japan.

In the book, Paul Nowak deals with three main works written by the samurai and shows how their philosophy is practical to Christians. He also shows Scripture passages that parallel these teachings. Amazingly, many of the excerpts from the samurai works are basically rewordings of passages of Scripture. Quickly after I began reading the book I was absolutely amazed by the level of devotion that they aimed to live by. By no means am I more impressed with their example than I am by our Lord’s example. Rather, I was encouraged to see that these men actually displayed the self-denial and loyalty to their master that we are called to do. Keep in mind also, that the samurai were this committed to a fallen human. Our master is the perfect risen King who helps us by sending us his Spirit! How much better should our example of servant hood be? To me, it should be much better. Yet from the examples given in this book, we have a lot of work to do in order to surpass the pagan samurai in our devotion to our master.

After reading it, I have a much better sense of what service and self-denial is. More importantly, it has helped me see more clearly the example that Jesus set, and has encouraged me that I can do much more in imitating it. Also note that this is not one of those lame self-help books. It is thoroughly Christ-centered. It is also a very unique book. I’m pretty sure that it will be a while before I come across a book this unique in content, yet this sound in its message. I suggest this book to everyone but especially to people who are interested in Japanese culture, because it deals a lot with the writings of the legendary samurai who helped make the culture famous.

Holy Warriors October 25, 2007
By Labarum VINE™ VOICE
Format:PaperbackA lot of people will get nervous about a book that suggests Christians have something to learn from the Samurai about how to serve the Lord. After all, weren’t the Samauri pagans? And doesn’t all of this reek of the sort of syncretism that attempts to equate all religions? It might except for two facts: Not all pagans were monsters and the modern West (including most of the Christians living there) have a lot to learn from the Samauri about the time honored concept of willing servitude.

Paul Nowak attempts to remedy that situation with The Way of the Christian Samurai. Consisting on excerpts from noted samauri masters (the samurai were a class of elite warriors in feudal Japan) with commentary noting applications to the Christian life, the book demonstrates how much modern society has lost in its quest for unrestrained egalitarianism. Certain passages in the New Testament – particularly those showing the deference given by the Apostles and others to Jesus (even before they knew His true nature as the Son of God) – can be misconstrued without understanding the cultural milieu wherein a respected figure was shown honor by those he visited and subservience by his followers. This is at odds with our own tradition on self-reliance to the point of self-centeredness that has led to the highly individualistic form of Christianity that has taken root in America (both on the liberal and conservative ends of the spectrum). The result is the claim of Jesus as Lord without fully grasping the import of claiming someone as Lord.

The samauri may not have been Christian but they did understand concepts that are applicable to the Christian life – often better than we. Integrity, loyalty, honor, service, courage, and self-sacrifice are all things that the samurai were instructed to live. Naturally, many failed in their personal lives but that is as true of Christian clerics as of samurai warriors. The important thing was that they understood the standard for which they strived while in many cases we in the postmodern world are oblivious to the existence of standards.

The excerpts on serving one’s lord are eye-openers for any Christian with a “soft” view of service that rarely goes beyond activities at their local church. The willingness of a warrior to give himself completely to his lord underscores what it means to make oneself part of the “body of Christ”. The Church, in this context, is not an abstract collection of like-minded individuals, but a concrete force sent out to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ a dying world.

To Nowak’s credit, he constantly emphasizes that the Samurai are not in any way Christian and the Samurai way is infinitely inferior to the Way of Christ. The samurai way is at times at odds with the Christian way and in these instances we are to reject the samurai teaching. However, we can learn how we are to serve our lord by the standards the samurai set in serving theirs. It is not a direct application of samurai teachings but one by analogy. It in a sense becomes comparable to how the early Church was able to utilize classical pagan philosopy in systematizing its own theology.

In all this talk of service, one might ask: What about freedom? Indeed, the Christian faith is certainly about freedom. It is about being freed from the bondage of sin but this freedom is found in placing oneself under the headship of Christ. Christians find freedom in becoming part of Christ’s body the Church when we place ourselves in service to Him. This does not at all correlate with the modern idea of freedom that insists we must follow our own desires, but looks back to a time when willingly placing oneself in the service of a great leader was considered a virtue not a vice.

The Way of the Christian Samurai is truly an unusual book among the many published that seek to link Christianity to various Eastern religions or philosophies. It’s uniqueness lies not in any success in doing so, but in its insistence that any such linkage must be judged by the known truths of the Christian faith. Given the limited focus of the book, its acknowledgment of the superiority Biblical teaching, and its usefulness in shedding light on often ignored facets of the Christian way, it is an important book that can be read with profit by those in the Church.

This review is from: Christianity Today (Magazine)
“Christianity Today” is much like “Time Magazine.” Founded in part by Billy Graham and Carl Henry, its basis is evangelical. However, as the Christian world is farther reaching than evangelicalism, so reaches “Christianity Today.” CT remains steady and solid in its views, and helps educates the well-read Christian.

Mixing pop-news, hard-hitting issues, and intriguing features, CT manages to cover and assess the present state of Christianity. With a core of intelligent thinkers, and seasoned journalists, CT has been the leader in Christian journalism, and sets the pace for its peers.

Articles are often passed around Sunday School and CCD classes to educate the layman what is going on in the modern Christian life, helping connect the year 33 AD with 2002 AD.

Though coming from a protestant slant, Catholics and Orthodox Christians would be well-served to explore this magazine, as the movements of world Christianity are followed and reported. For example, they have done a great job reporting and analyzing the issues surrounding the Irish Catholic-Protestant conflict, separating the socio-political from the religious points of view.

A great buy. I fully recommend “Christianity Today.”

This review is from: Christianity Today (Magazine)
For a general-purpose Christian magazine, its hard to go wrong with Christianity Today. It has a little bit of everything that touches the Christian world, whether news, theology, morality, or the devotional life. Editorials and articles are well thought-out and presented in a very intellectually engaging manner. In a couple of issues that followed the 09/11 tragedy, the magazine dealt with questions that were on the minds of many: Is Islam a religion of peace? and Is the God of Mohammad the same God as the God of Jesus Christ? The articles on those questions really nailed the issue for me. Also recently there have been ongoing discussions of Openness Theology which have been helpful. The alternating columns by Philip Yancey and Chuck Colson are worth the price of the magazine. One area that could stand some expansion is the reviews section, particularly book reviews. Besides that, its hard to find fault with this magazine.

This review is from: Christianity Today (Magazine)
I have read CT for years, and appreciate its ability to report on the broad Christian world, as well as current events, from an evangelical perspective that informs believers, and offers credible material for those who want to know what we think. The blend of church news, world news, culture, and theological discussion is amazing. While covering controversies within denominations and movements, CT also helps bring the broad evangelical movement together through its explication and analysis.
Some reviewers complain that CT promotes a prosperity gospel, denominational strife, or other such unbalanced views. Such mistaken views come from reading one article, or one or two issues. Magazines sometimes write interview articles on individual thinkers, and what comes across should be seen as a report of the subject’s perspective, not an editorial endorsement by the interviewer. CT instructs the church, by allowing us to see what others are saying. It does so with crisp, concise and thoughtful style.

Bottom-line: Evangelicals will learn much about the world and themselves from this publication. Those interesting in knowing the thoughts, struggles and issues within evangelicalism will find Christianity Today a good starting place

Biography
Joyce Meyer is one of the world’s leading practical Bible teachers. A New York Times bestselling author, her books have helped millions of people find hope and restoration through Jesus Christ.
Through Joyce Meyer Ministries, she teaches on hundreds of subjects, has authored over seventy books and conducts close to fifteen conferences per year. To date, more than 12 million of her books have been distributed worldwide, and in 2007 over 3.2 million copies were sold. Joyce also has a television and radio program, Enjoying Everyday Life®, that is broadcast worldwide to a potential audience of 3 billion people. In addition, her programs can be accessed around the clock at www.joycemeyer.org.
Having suffered sexual abuse as a child and the pain of an emotionally abusive first marriage, Joyce discovered the freedom to live victoriously by applying God’s Word to her life and in turn desires to help others do the same. From her battle with breast cancer to the struggles of everyday life, she speaks openly and practically about her experiences so others can apply what she has learned to their lives.
Over the years, God has provided Joyce with many opportunities to share her testimony and the life-changing message of the Gospel. In fact, Time magazine selected her as one of the most influential evangelical leaders in America. She is an incredible testimony of the dynamic, redeeming work of Jesus Christ. She believes and teaches that regardless of a person’s background or past mistakes, God has a place for them and can help them on their path to enjoying everyday life.
Joyce holds an earned PhD in theology from Life Christian University in Tampa, Florida; an honorary doctorate in divinity from Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma; and an honorary doctorate in sacred theology from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona. Joyce and her husband, Dave, have been married for over forty years, and they are the parents of four grown children. Dave and Joyce Meyer make their home in St. Louis, Missouri.

Do you take aspirin, Tylenol or Advil when you have a headache?

Well, this book is medicine for the spirit!

It is broken down into categories for easy reference. IE: Hope, anger, encouragement, faith and so on.

So many times we get “attacked” during the day… I pull out my book find the appropriate scriptures, say them out load (that’s the key) and immediately feel the peace of God.

This review is from: The Secret Power of Speaking God’s Word (Hardcover)
When I first received this book, I was a little disappointed because it wasn’t what I expected. It has turned out to be even better than I expected. This book has become my pocket reference for POWERFUL scriptures. I carried it one day to a business seminar, during one of the breaks my co-worker learned some disappointing news. I could see her spirit was down and she needed some encouragement. I started to quote some of the powerful scriptures on faith from the book. She asked to see the book, she read over the scriptures and began meditating on them. Her spirit quickly became uplifted.
The size of the book is perfect, you can discretly pull it out and look up a scripture for whatever you may be dealing with at the time. There are scriptures on, insecurity, patience, favor, wisdom, courage, and depression to name a few.

This review is from: Passion:
It’s that good. And while, of course, that isn’t the goal of the Passion Movement (and this humility makes the album’s “victory” all the more resounding), the analogy fits. “White Flag” surpasses ALL in its scope and heavenly grandeur.

At times powerfully intimate in its vivid and emotional display of worship, it’s also quite musically diverse and a lot of fun in the process. The lineup is perfect; it’s more varied than last year’s “Here For You,” but it seems natural that, with Chris Tomlin being attributed lead/major songwriting credit on at least nine of the songs, the album still feels something like a personal EP for the Texas native (which I’m nowhere near complaining about). Each of these nineteen songs (including the bonus content and two extra music videos) feels fresh and every artist is at the top of his or her game–all pointing to a God who’s always been at the top of his. I can’t speak for anyone else, but this album–and the beauty and passion displayed within, as well as the movement’s commitment to end modern-day slavery throughout the world–has again reminded me of why I waved my own “white flag” in the first place. It has stirred within me a desire and passion for both God and his unrelenting love, and to share that love, unconditionally, with every person I encounter.

“White Flag” is, without a doubt, the best addition so far in the 268 Generation’s repertoire of modern worship anthems, and it will certainly find its place in a Sunday morning, corporate setting. Every song in this collection serves as poignant, heart-wrenching worship that speaks directly about a message of hope and life–true LIFE–found in surrender, in laying down one’s life before the Cross. Before a God who laid himself down for us–who waved HIS white flag to buy OUR victory.

To buy OUR freedom.

Product Description
In this four week mini Bible Study you will examine your faith and what it means to have faith in God.

He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.” Matthew 17:20

Our faith begins with what we know and believe about God. Our faith will carry us how far we are willing to let it take us. Faith is a choice and we need to begin by choosing to believe in Jesus and His power to move mountains, heal the sick, and save us from all our sins through His sacrifice on the cross.

When we believe in God we then learn to walk in faith and trust God. But first we must believe, and it’s up to us, we can either choose to believe in Him or not. But faith will mean nothing until we believe with all our heart that God is who He says He is.

This review is from: Faith – Four Week Mini Bible Study (Becoming Press Mini Bible Studies) (Kindle Edition)
This week, I read Heather Bixler’s Mini Bible Study on FAITH. This is one of my favorite subjects, and having been a Christian for many years, I didn’t suppose there was much I hadn’t already heard about it, but it’s nice to hear it, again. My goodness, was I wrong! While the scriptures were familiar, I loved the wonderfully fresh perspectives on them that can only come from someone who is truly “in touch” with the Lord. How can I say something like that? Well, I’ll tell you. It’s because I came away with something life-changing.

It was the suggestion that faith is a choice.

Now, having always considered faith to be something that “grew” in you, something you had to personally work hard to cultivate, this was a highly refreshing thought for me to think about. If all I had to do was choose (like picking chocolate over vanilla), I would choose faith all day long. Then it occurred to me that maybe I simply had the habit of looking where I had been, to figure out where I was going, instead of looking ahead. So, I started making a conscious decision to “choose faith” if ever I spotted an opportunity on my horizon. What a boon to realize there were little opportunities everywhere, once I started looking for them! And what a surprise to discover how much I liked doing it. There was a bonus, too.

Choosing faith has made me feel joyful. It makes me smile when I think about it, and gives me something to look forward to every day. What’s more, it doesn’t go away, like so many other enjoyable things do after they’re over. In short, this little Bible study made me think, and discover new things about my own Christianity. And that’s how I knew for sure where this secret truly came from. Perhaps if you read this book (and I hope you will), God will whisper something joyful to your heart, as well. Meanwhile, I’m very glad Heather Bixler took the time to share what she heard.

Thank you, Heather!

The untold story of how John Ramsey survived unspeakable tragedy and learned to hope again.

Like the biblical Job, John Ramsey had it all-wealthy, social position, a loving family. And like Job, Ramsey was destined for great affliction, as many of the most precious things in his life were cruelly taken from him.

First came the death of his eldest daughter in a car accident in 1992. Then, four years later, his beloved six-year-old, JonBenét, was murdered; Ramsey was the one who discovered her body, concealed in the basement of his family’s home. The case drew international media attention, and-compounding Ramsey’s woe-suspicion unfairly focused on Ramsey and his wife, Patsy. Although they were ultimately cleared of any connection with the crime, Ramsey’s sorrows did not end. In 2006, Patsy died, at 49, of ovarian cancer.

In this remarkable book, Ramsey reveals how he was sustained by faith during the long period of spiritual darkness, and he offers hope and encouragement to others who suffer tragedy and injustice.

Editorial Reviews
Review
“Part memoir, part murder mystery and part diatribe, this book targets socially conservative Christians, but much of its content will undoubtedly engender sympathy in a broader audience. . . .As we read their account of the hellishness of their lives since their daughter’s murder, we realize that nothing about this situation has ever been fair and simply mourn that they had occasion to write this book at all.” (Publishers Weekly on The Death of Innocence )

This review is from: The Other Side of Suffering: The Father of JonBenet Ramsey Tells the Story of His Journey from Grief to Grace (Hardcover)
On Christmas night 1996, six-year-old JonBenét Ramsey was violently murdered in the basement of her Boulder, Colorado, home while the rest of her family slept upstairs in their beds. Her father, John Ramsey, was placed under an umbrella of suspicion as being her killer. Her mother, Patsy Ramsey, who was battling ovarian cancer at the time, was publicly placed under that same umbrella. The Other Side of Suffering is John Ramsey’s story of the tremendous suffering and heartache he has endured in his life. But this is not just the story of a singular horrific event, and it is not the story you’ve heard over and over from the news media. It is, in a story never before told, John Ramsey’s personal journey of suffering, courage, and faith.

Extremely well written and filled with emotion, this book contains many sad and incredible stories told to illustrate John Ramsey’s journey through suffering and faith. Although I initially approached reading this book with skepticism, I soon found myself reading through tear-filled blurry eyes. By the time I had finished reading, I had openly wept several times throughout the book.

This book was written as an encouragement to those who might otherwise abandon their faith in God in times of crisis and tragedy. The author elucidates the fact that life is not always fair, life is not always easy, but God is always good.

“People ask me how long it takes to get over the loss of a child. My response is, you never get over it.” ~John Ramsey

Wonderful Book! Must Read!!!

11/30/2011

In Behind the Veils of Yemen, author, Audra Grace Shelby shares her journey as a Christian woman in a culture very different from her own. Audra, her husband and their children uprooted their lives in the U.S. for a life of missions deep in the heart of conservative Islam. This 238 page book details Audra’s journey, struggles and intense doubts while trying to get “behind the veils” of muslim women. Audras’s deep desire to know these women on a personal level and share her love of Jesus Christ with them was truly inspiring. She definitely built some strong relationships and I was very impressed with her level of commitment to uphold their conservative appearance.

I could not put this book down, it was incredibly fascinating to learn more about the Muslim faith and their views on Christianity. Audra doesn’t share a lot about her family in the book and I guess that would be my only complaint, I would love to know how her children felt and coped with being in culture so different and dangerous. As a Christian, I am reminded that God loves people of every religion, background and nation. It’s very easy to not see past our borders, I am in awe of what this woman was committed to doing for the Kingdom of God. I would recommend this book to anyone. I have never been interested in missions but I have a completely different view after reading this. The story flowed very well and was a fast read for me. I LOVED IT!

I received this book from Bethany House publishers review program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

Just a girl. The only one strong enough to break the cycle.

In Depression-era Mississippi, Millie Reynolds longs to escape the madness that marks her world. With an abusive father and a “nothing mama,” she struggles to find a place where she really belongs.

For answers, Millie turns to the Gypsies who caravan through town each spring. The travelers lead Millie to a key that unlocks generations of shocking family secrets. When tragedy strikes, the mysterious contents of the box give Millie the tools she needs to break her family’s longstanding cycle of madness and abuse.

Through it all, Millie experiences the thrill of first love while fighting to trust the God she believes has abandoned her. With the power of forgiveness, can Millie finally make her way into the free?

Saturated in Southern ambiance and written in the vein of other Southern literary bestsellers like The Help by Kathryn Stockett and Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter by Tom Franklin, Julie Cantrell has created a story that will sweep you away long after the novel ends.

Editorial Reviews
Review
“A visceral and gripping journey of a young woman’s revelations about God and self, this novel will surely excite any reader who appreciates a compelling story about personal struggle and spiritual resilience.”

Publishers’ Weekly

“Julie Cantrell beautifully renders a vivid past, but her subjects are immediate and eternal—family secrets, love’s many losses, revenge and revelation, and finally redemption. Her characters may buck and brawl and bray against the notion of God in their lives, but there’s no denying He continues to send them into each other’s path, and Cantrell masterfully introduces them to one another in her wonderfully woven narrative. This book is full of insightful detail and wondrous turns, with an ending that moves in all directions through time like God’s grace.”

Mark Richard, author of House of Prayer No. 2

“Exquisitely written, Julie Cantrell has created a haunting story that will linger in your heart long after you’ve turned the last page.”

Karen White, New York Times bestselling author of The Beach Trees

This review is from: Into the Free: A Novel (Paperback)
My disclaimer regarding bias: I grew up with the author, and thought the world of her long before she published anything. Now, I am simply in awe of her. Most reviews I’ve written have been solicited by authors known to me personally. This review is unsolicited. I hope that my inadequate typed words are able to convey the depth of passion I have for this book.

The bottom line: I have no recollection of being so powerfully moved by written words in my lifetime.
I read the first four chapters after a long day at the office, when I greatly desired only to sleep. I forced myself to put the book away, only after awakening my bride to share a few passages with her. I rationalized savoring the experience, meteing out only a few chapters a night. Today, instead, I finished the book. I cried no less than three times. I stopped to get into the floor and play with my kid, tears in my eyes, and to hold him- telling him that I love him. Mrs. Perkin’s Millie Reynolds represents to me hundreds of victims of domestic abuse/neglect and child witnesses of domestic violence that have streamed through my office seeking therapeutic services. My tears and anguish for Millie are the tears I’ve never let myself cry for them- the depth of pain that I felt here something professional boundaries limit me from in my practice.

Julie writes with an authenticity and genuineness that perfectly captures the experience of many children who grow up in violent homes. Millie’s growth from child to late adolescent in the book tracks perfectly with the psychologic development of kids in her position. I’ve developed workshops and delivered countless trainings in this particular subject area. With Into the Free, I could instead take a front row seat in Julie’s classroom, witnessing firsthand, transfixed, the personification of everything I’ve ever learned from my clients about their experience. One of my favorite professors described empathy as walking with our clients, trying to understand their experience. With the characters in this book, I was able to walk a mile in their shoes- wanting desperately to flee from the text, but unable to abandon the young protagonist when she was so desperately alone.

I am considering making this book required reading for a class that I teach at a local university. There is no better way to experience the journey of so many of the people we work with. For those blessed to never live in Millie’s circumstance, it offers insight into the human condition. For those who have or still do, it may offer some roadmap to healing their own invisible wounds.

This is an outstanding read, its characters complex and evolving. It is easy to love young Millie Reynolds, to be afraid for her, to cheer for her, to want to hold her tightly until the storms in her life pass. The reader is treated to an age-accurate view of the world that matures as Millie does- from a dichotomous perspective that categorizes people as good or bad, to one more accurately reflecting the people that we all are- significanly more than can be described with a few adjectives.

Buy this book- the publisher guarantees to credit your purchase price if you don’t believe it worth the time most will certainly invest into it. My warning: don’t buy it if you are afraid to connect with the protagonist at a visceral level. I don’t suspect many will read the book without going through a spectrum of emotions.

This review is from: Into the Free: A Novel (Paperback)
Julie Cantrell has written a great novel. It is a story of grief, love, conflict, and forgiveness. And as it is Southern, it is especially a story of faith. It is difficult to write a review of such a story, as the risk of leaving out critical concepts is greater with the myriad of them Julie has woven so well into this tale; so brevity herein. Her characters are masterful: from her father (whom she calls by his given name, Jack)and mother to her almost-mystical, Sloth, to a knight (my appellation) named Bump the reader will attach himself to them as well as others. I don’t know where Julie came up with the idea to write INTO THE FREE, but God gave her the talent to write it.

Many books have been written on conservative politics. Many more have been written calling Christians to holiness and spiritual revival. Few, however, have managed to combine a clear explanation of the conservative political perspective with its corresponding personal and spiritual virtue.

In INDIVISIBLE, James Robison, the founder and president of LIFE Outreach International, partners with Jay Richards, Ph.D., a writer who has appeared in both the New York Times and The Washington Post. Together, they tackle tough, controversial political issues facing conservative Christians today, including abortion, stem cell research, education, economics, health care, the environment, judicial activism, marriage, and others. Written to appeal to a broad spectrum of believers, INDIVISIBLE not only argues political questions from a Scriptural standpoint, it also provides simple arguments that Christians can use to support their beliefs in public settings.

Most significantly, Robison and Richards recognize that the point of origin for spiritual and moral transformation is the individual. “We are convinced by historical precedent that long term cultural change requires not merely sound thinking and public good works but rather, God’s spiritual and moral transformation of us as individuals, which will then transform our churches, our communities, our culture, and ultimately our politics.”

James Robison is the founder and president of LIFE Outreach International, a worldwide Christian relief organization. He is also the host of LIFE Today, a daily syndicated television program that reaches 300 million homes in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Australia. He is the author of many books, including The Absolutes, True Prosperity, and Living in Love, and has spoken to millions of people through evangelistic crusades since entering public ministry in 1962.

Jay W. Richards, Ph.D., is a Senior Fellow at the Discovery Institute and the author of many books, including the award-winning Money, Greed, and God and The Privileged Planet. He is the executive director of the documentaries The Call of the Entrepreneur and The Birth of Freedom. He has been featured in the New York Times and the Washington Post and has appeared on Larry King Live. He has also lectured on economic myths to members of the U.S. Congress.

Editorial Reviews
Review
“INDIVISIBLE can change forever how you see the world. Grasp the wisdom shared in this book, and the scripture ‘My people perish for lack of knowledge’ will no longer apply. This can prove to be the much-needed game changer for America.” (Gov. Mike Huckabee )

“At the very least, every person of faith in America needs to read INDIVISIBLE. Whether the issue is the sanctity of human life, religious freedom, education, or economics, Robison and Richards provide biblical answers to often controversial issues. INDIVISIBLE is the kind of book that can alter the course of a nation if it is read and embraced by our nation’s citizens.” (Richard Land, President of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission )

“I read this book from cover to cover, in one sitting, in awe of what God was up to in these pages. INDIVISIBLE builds a sure bridge of faith and reason over which our country can walk, from our present state of confusion and peril into a new era of peace and prosperity. My friends James Robison and Jay Richards have given the Christian community–indeed, all of us–an invaluable tool for hope.” (Father Jonathan Morris, Fox News Analyst and Author of God Wants You Happy )

“James Robison and Jay Richards chop up and stir some of the most indigestible issues of our time-sex, money, race, gender, education, you name it-and then bite down on the hot and highly seasoned casserole with relish and realism. You’ll be talking to the chapters as you go along, cheering them on, and thinking about your Uncle Harry or an errant kid in college who needs to get INDIVISIBLE as a gift. I personally want to see it in the hands of those misguided politicos and media conservatives who think that social issues and economic issues can be separated. They can’t, and these irenic and ecumenical authors-an evangelical and a Catholic-make that case persuasively, concussively clear. Presidential candidates, take note.” (George Gilder, Co-founder of Discovery Institute
and Author of Wealth & Poverty and The Israel Test )

“INDIVISIBLE can be a turning point in the moral, cultural, and economic decline of the United States-if its readers make it so. The authors-a leading Evangelical and a prominent Catholic-fairly and thoroughly lay out the fundamental principles without which family, freedom, and prosperity will virtually disappear in this country. If men and women of good will, aware of the historic challenges we face, cannot unite behind these principles-indivisibly social, moral, and economic-and elect leaders who will implement them, future generations will only know of the greatness of this nation as the fading story of a lost treasure.” (Father Joseph Fessio, S.J., Founder and Editor, Ignatius Press )

“Biblical clarity is a great gift today in the midst of our country’s complex set of moral and social issues. In this book, Jay Richards and James Robison have given that gift to serious Christians who want to follow and serve Jesus Christ in America with wisdom, courage, and compassion.” (Dr. E. Andrew McQuitty, Pastor, Irving Bible Church )

“WOW! James Robison and Jay Richards’ book, INDIVISIBLE, makes a courageous stand for the foundation of America. This is a recipe for restoring our culture.” (Dave Stone, Senior Minister of Southeast Christian Church, Louisville, KY )

“James Robison and Jay Richards have presented to every believer and concerned citizen the issues that must be placed on the table of reason and as focal points for prayer. This is a must read and if these truths are embraced, both the church and nation will experience much needed restoration.” (Dr. Tony Evans, President, The Urban Alternative and Senior Pastor of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship, Dallas, Texas )

“A personal relationship with the Lord should affect every area of life, including the political. Politics can be confusing for many-even more so for Christians-as we struggle to make faith and political actions work together in a healthy way. Indivisible delivers concise, godly truth that will cut through the noise and help you develop a biblical perspective on political responsibilities.” (Robert Morris, Senior Pastor, Gateway Church, Southlake, Texas )

“James Robison and Jay Richards inspire us to find the necessary common ground to address our serious challenges. It is not a question of right vs. left, it is right vs. wrong. INDIVISIBLE provides the understanding that concerned people of faith need to help correct our nation’s perilous course.” (Dr. Jim Garlow, Pastor of Skyline Church, San Diego and Chairman of Renewing American Leadership, Washington, DC )

“People are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Knowledge is damaged if not destroyed when it is detached from reality. Reality is God’s perspective of life and how it is designed to function in His kingdom order. The book INDIVISIBLE contains knowledge, reality and life. For the classroom, living room, board room of corporations, or the war room of governmental decisions, James Robison and Jay Richards have addressed issues that must be faced. (Jim Hylton, Pastor of Skyline Fellowship, Fort Worth, Texas and author of The Supernatural Skyline )

“A powerful, well-informed, persuasive argument that the `social’ and `economic’issues ultimately will stand or fall together. James Robison and Jay Richards provide a fascinating analysis of all the major political issues today and show that conservative policies are both beneficial for the nation and consistent with Christian moral teachings.” (Wayne Grudem, Ph.D., Research Professor of Theology and Biblical Studies, Phoenix Seminary, Phoenix, Arizona )

“It is relatively easy to observe that our society is fast reaching a climactic moment. How to discern a wise, credible, effective and prudent course of action to avoid disaster is not so easy to come across. Jay Richards and James Robison make an important contribution in pointing the way to avoid the worst effects of a coming cultural and economic tsunami.” (Rev. Robert A. Sirico, President, Acton Institute )

“Everywhere I go, Christians have a sense of urgency concerning reclaiming the prophetic voice of the Church in the culture. INDIVISIBLE gives us a framework for understanding and advancing God’s agenda in our lifetime. As an African-American leader, I applaud the sensitivity and clarity with which James Robison and Jay Richards have addressed “biblical justice” issues. Their heart for the poor and the least among us is clear, and their biblical solutions are revolutionary. It’s time for the true `rainbow coalition’to come forth. This coalition is indivisible as it relates to believing God’s covenant. It is indivisible as it relates to unity in the body of Christ. Finally, it’s indivisible as it relates to walking our talk in the communities in which we live. As you peruse the pages of this excellent work, may you receive the inspiration to become an agent of His will in your own life, in your family, in your church and in our nation.” (Bishop Harry R. Jackson, Jr., Senior Pastor, Hope Christian Church, President, High, Impact Leadership Coalition, Presiding Bishop of the International Communion of Evangelical Churches )

“In a era when Washington’s reach continues to exceed its grasp, INDIVISIBLE defines the right role of government, explains why social and fiscal conservatives should embrace both the morality of markets and the efficiency of the markets-and why doing so requires no simple act of faith.” (Arthur Brooks, President, American Enterprise Institute )

“Rather than accept the common view that faith and politics are ever to be divided, James Robison and Jay Richards appeal convincingly to indivisible principles to show not only that our moral beliefs are compatible with a free market, but also that-now more than ever-religious believers and the advocates of economic freedom must work together to help get our country back on course.” (Matthew Spalding, Vice President of American Studies at The Heritage Foundation and author of We Still Hold These Truths: Rediscovering Our Principles, Reclaiming Our Future )

“Finally, someone has provided the road map for how America gets through the difficulties we are currently experiencing. With their book INDIVISIBLE, James Robison and Jay Richards review American history in great depth, as a prelude to outlining the process for recapturing American Exceptionalism. This book is a critical read for every concerned American and a blueprint for the Christian church. I am encouraged by the unity of effort between these two men of different theologies who put aside their differences in order to help save the nation. Great job, guys!” (LTG(R) Jerry Boykin, Former Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence and founding member of the US Army’s Delta Force )

“James Robison and Jay Richards remind us that good stewardship of freedom’s blessings means recognizing that the moral and economic foundations of American liberty are indeed, indivisible.” (Jennifer Marshall, Director, Domestic Policy Studies
The Heritage Foundation )

“For years I was a bystander concerning national issues. I felt it wasn’t necessary for me to get involved, especially since my husband is on the front lines. The Lord has shown me how important it is to know the issues so I can pray and stand up for what is right. INDIVISIBLE will equip you with what you need to know so you can present, discuss, and defend your beliefs effectively in these trying times. You, too, can make a difference!” (Betty Robison, Co-host, “LIFE Today” Television,
Fort Worth, Texas )

“James Robison and Jay Richards have given America a tremendous gift. INDIVISIBLE is a stunning synthesis and super clear explanation of the most important issues facing us today, full of wisdom and grace and truth. It should give all who read it real hope that God has not forsaken this nation and that there is indeed a way forward. I pray that book groups will study this book and use it to become part of the solution, so that America might again fulfill God’s call upon her, to be a beacon of hope and freedom for the world.” (Eric Metaxas, New York Times bestselling author of Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy and Amazing Grace: William Wilberforce and the Heroic Campaign to End Slavery )

“This is no grocery store romance novel. But it is full of love and truth–the twin sources of every great romance. So… ‘read and heed’… and step up to an active role in restoring America to her glorious roots–`with liberty and justice for all.'” (Stu Weber, pastor and author )

“We cannot have a strong national defense without a strong economy. We cannot have a strong economy without a healthy culture and vibrant, in-tact families. These assertions are demonstrable; a blizzard of research proves them. In their moving new book, INDIVISIBLE, James Robison and Jay Richards make a compelling case that Christians must continue working – with grace, humility, diligence and determination – to advance the sanctity of life, the dignity of marriage and the traditional family and the centrality of religious liberty to our nation.” (Tony Perkins, President, Family Research Council )

“I have read dozens of books on how to apply a Christian worldview to public policy, but INDIVISIBLE is by far the most clear, simple, and compelling book of its kind. I especially appreciate how James and Jay acknowledge thearguments against their position and respond in a reasonable fashion. You may disagree with what they say, but you’ll have to admit that they’ve been agreeable in the way they said it. INDIVISIBLE not only sound a clear note, it does so in a way that brings civility to anoften uncivil arena.” (Jeff Myers, Ph.D., President of Summit Ministries )

This review is from: Indivisible: Restoring Faith, Family, and Freedom Before It’s Too Late (Hardcover)
This book is a thorough survey of what has become the greatest debate of our time–the role of the government in our lives and the prospect for personal freedom. This is unabashedly a Christian conservative book. As such, it will be disregarded off hand by anyone who leans away from the religious right. But that would be a terrible mistake. Like another awesome book on the modern political system, Juggernaut: Why the System Crushes the Only People Who Can Save It, this book delves into some of the most fascinating paradoxes of the modern world and shows just how twisted it has become. It is an argument that everyone can appreciate, no matter what his political stripe is.

The insight begins with the title. What exactly is indivisible anyway? The authors bring up the fact that freedom cannot be divided between fiscal and social issues. If you want freedom, you must strive for freedom in both. This is where the interesting part comes in. When the authors say that one must strive for freedom, they are not saying that one must be able to do whatever they want to do. As they put it, freedom is “getting to do what you don’t want to do, not to do what you want to do.” And by taking this frame, the authors make the claim that, in order to defend freedom, you not only have to prevent government intrusion on the fiscal and economic plane, but also on the social plane.

To be sure, the authors oppose government intervention in fiscal areas, but they also oppose government intrusion in the social realm as well. What is interesting is that they don’t take this to mean that we should legalize everything from abortion to gay marriage. To the authors, defending freedom in the social realm is to in fact defend laws against things like abortion and gay marriage.

This might seem a little counter-intuitive at first glance. This is how the logic works: The authors bring up an important point: In the beginning of the country, religious freedom was seen as important so that no state government could impose its brand of religion on its citizens. Now the situation has flipped. No longer is there a need to prevent state governments from imposing its religion, it is necessary to prevent state governments from imposing its atheism on its subjects. It used to be that free thinkers were the main beneficiaries of religious freedom; now the truly religious are the only ones who can benefit. Ultimately, the moral of the story is the same: the only way that people can exist side-by-side together in a complex society is if they are able to practice their religion freely without encumbrance from the government. If you have this foundation, you have a thriving people, determined to produce for themselves and capable of conducting the trade essential for productivity and growth. Without this foundation, you have a calumnious people, determined to fight each other until their way of life is protected.

Government is supposed to be non-religious, that is true. But it is also supposed to be limited. When government expands the way it has in the last several decades, its non-religious foundation means that there are atheistic standards infiltrating our day-to-day activities. Sure, we can be religious outside of our affiliations with government, but, increasingly, it is becoming harder to do anything outside of government’s purview.

An excellent read for anyone interested in the big battle going on these days.

Uniquely inspired treasures from heaven for every day of the year by missionary Sarah Young.

Jesus Calling is a devotional filled with uniquely inspired treasures from heaven for every day of the year. After many years of writing in her prayer journal, missionary Sarah Young decided to listen to God with pen in hand, writing down whatever she believed He was saying to her. It was awkward at first, but gradually her journaling changed from monologue to dialogue. She knew her writings were not inspired as Scripture is, but journaling helped her grow closer to God. Others were blessed as she shared her writings, until people all over the world were using her messages. They are written from Jesus’ point of view, thus the title Jesus Calling. It is Sarah’s fervent prayer that our Savior may bless readers with His presence and His peace in ever deeper measure.

This review is from: Jesus Calling: Enjoying Peace in His Presence (Hardcover)
“Jesus Calling” is a relatively unique devotional book in that Sarah Young has written her devotions from the point of view of Jesus Christ. Using this technique gives the book a sense of immediacy and intimacy with the Lord, and this is the great strength of the book.

Many of these short sayings that Young puts in the mouth of Jesus are things the Lord would say and has said to me during a life of listening to Him, reading the Scriptures, and keeping a journal. How often have I heard Him remind me to worship Him alone, to trust in Him at all times, and that He is always with me. To hear these words as if they are Jesus’ own can be beneficial to the soul.

However, there are 4 reasons I can give “Jesus Calling” only 3 stars and not 4 or 5 stars, (even though I’m vastly outnumbered in the reviews on Amazon).

1. Young has Jesus say only a limited range of things compared to what God actually teaches in the entirety of the Bible. I love to hear Jesus say things like, “Relax; Trust Me; Listen to Me; I am with you; I am calling you; and Wait for Me.” But this seems to be all that Young’s Jesus ever says. Where are the specific commandments of Jesus, and not just “affirmations”? Where does this Jesus ever talk about the practical ways we should love our neighbor, and not just love God? And why is it always a solitary call to be alone with Him, when we’re called to be the Church?

2. “Jesus Calling” shows Young’s bias and doesn’t have Jesus say the hard things He must often say. Where are His reminders and commandments to seek forgiveness and to forgive, to love regardless of the cost, etc? This Jesus doesn’t seem ask us to do anything difficult or to sacrifice very much. It’s all “You are on the right path.” Where are the times when Jesus has to chastise, correct, and discipline us? Where are the times when He says things like, “Repent!” or “You’re being too selfish and must take up your cross for Me today.”?

3. “Jesus Calling” doesn’t give any hint that sometimes God may withdraw His sweet fruit from our lives so we will depend only on Him, and not on His gifts. The saints have often experienced the “dark night of the soul” when we can’t always feel God’s blessed Presence? What then? Young’s devotional doesn’t account for this.

4. The devotionals are not directly scriptural. Thankfully, these devotionals aren’t heretical or unsound: they’re just incomplete. It’s true that there are some Scripture references tacked on at the end of each devotional, but I don’t sense that the whole counsel of God comes through in these devotionals. I like what God has told Young, but sometimes it’s all too easy to interpret your own voice as being that of the Lord’s. Occasionally, the words presented as Jesus’ are jarring and don’t sound like Jesus, such as: “This is a paradigm shift that will revolutionize your life” (devotional for March 22).

“Jesus Calling” has undoubtedly blessed many lives and will continue to do so. However, it gives a narrow view of the entirety of what Jesus Christ has to say to us.

Life as Kim and Krickitt Carpenter knew it was shattered beyond recognition on November 24, 1993. Two months after their marriage, a devastating car wreck left Krickitt with a massive head injury and in a coma for weeks.

When she finally awoke, she had no idea who Kim was. With no recollection of their relationship and while Krickitt experienced personality changes common to those who suffer head injuries, Kim realized the woman he had married essentially died in the accident.

And yet, against all odds, but through the common faith in Christ that sustained them, Kim and Krickitt fell in love all over again. Even though Kim stood by Krickitt through the darkest times a husband can ever imagine, he insists, “I’m no hero. I made a vow.”

Now available in trade paper with a new chapter and photo insert, The Vow is the true story that inspired the major motion picture of the same name starring Rachel McAdams (The Notebook), Channing Tatum (Dear John), Sam Neill (Jurassic Park), and Academy Award winner Jessica Lange.

This review is from: The Vow: The True Events that Inspired the Movie (Paperback)
Married for just a few short months, Kim and Krickitt Carpenter were involved in a devastating life-altering automobile accident. As the physical wounds healed, it became clear that Krickitt had lost 18 months of memory. She didn’t remember meeting, dating or marrying her husband, Kim. This is their true story of how their love persevered.

Quote: “Krickitt, who’s your husband?” Krickitt looked at me again and back at the therapist. I was sure everyone could hear my heart thudding as I waited for my wife’s answer in silence and desperation. “I’m not married.” (The Vow, Page 2 and 83)

Every once in a while you read a story that is so astonishing that it just doesn’t seem real. The Vow: The Kim and Krickitt Carpenter Story is one of those stories with an amazing tale of a horrific accident, intense hospitalizations and medical bills and a wife with amnesia that leaves her with no recollection of ever even meeting her husband.

The book chronicles Kim and Krickitt’s life together. Beginning with their first initial meeting and their first wedding, the vast majority of this book covers their struggles after the accident, which occurred when they had been married only two months. Once it is clear that Krickitt’s memory is forever altered, the Carpenter’s struggle to date again, love again and eventually marry again.

The Carpenters are devout Christians and believe that God uses them infinitely through their incredible story. Throughout the book, the entire Carpenter family leans on God through good times and bad, with heartbreaking honesty. Their story is one of doubting God’s plan, but having faith that God does indeed have a plan.

I found that the unsaid question at the core of this book is “What would you do?”. Would you have survived the accident? Would you trust God? Would you have stayed true to your vows? Would you fall in love with your spouse all over again? Read this book to see how Kim and Krickitt Carpenter responded with grace, dignity and perseverance.

Please note: I have not seen the movie yet so I can’t make any comparisons. From a quick check on the internet I can see that names, locations and a few important facts have been changed from the book. According to the book (page 164-165), the Carpenters signed a movie deal in 1996 and learned fourteen years later than the movie would be produced. The Carpenters were able to visit the movie set during filming. To quote Kim Carpenter from the book, “Though many changes were made, as is typically the case when true events are adapted for the silver screen, the basic framework was still in place and Krickitt and I felt it to be an excellent portrayal of the message of our story.”

Source: I received this book complimentary from Lowell/Fairchild Communications in exchange for an honest review but the opinion is all mine.

Book Description
Publication Date: November 2, 2011
Jesus said, “You must love the Lord your God with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” – Luke10:27

If one had to choose a single verse in the Bible that is a formula for successful living, this would be the one to live by, says Joyce Meyer: love God, yourself and others – in that order.

Many Christians get mixed up about love. They know they should love God and others, but many do not understand that loving oneself is one-third of God’s equation. They mistakenly think of it as selfishness or self-aggrandizement.

Joyce Meyer believes that this misconception is one of the greatest pitfalls in the Christian journey. Loving oneself in a balanced, healthy manner is essential in order to have healthy relationships with God, ourselves and others.

Drawing upon her previous work and teaching series as well as original devotions, the author of Power Thoughts examines the three loves that we’ve been commanded to exhibit.

Book Description

The average person has 70,000 thoughts every day, and many of those thoughts trigger a corresponding emotion. No wonder so many of us often feel like we’re controlled by our emotions. Our lives would be much improved is we controlled them.

In LIVING BEYOND YOUR FEELINGS, Joyce Meyer examines the gamut of feelings that human beings experience. She discusses the way that the brain processes and stores memories and thoughts, and then – emotion by emotion – she explains how we can manage our reactions to those emotions. By doing that, she gives the reader a toolbox for managing the way we react to the onslaught of feelings that can wreak havoc on our lives.

In this book, Meyer blends the wisdom of the Bible with the latest psychological research and discusses: the 4 personality types and their influence on one’s outlook, the impact of stress on physical and emotional health, the power of memories, the influence of words on emotions, anger & resentment, sadness, loss & grief, fear, guilt & regret, the power of replacing reactions with pro-actions, and the benefits of happiness.

This review is from: Living Beyond Your Feelings: Controlling Emotions So They Don’t Control You (Hardcover)
I recently discovered Joyce Meyer Ministries a couple of months ago and her teaching is making such a difference in my life! Before this book, I bought one of her other books called Battlefield of the Mind and it is helping me in tremendous ways! I definitely recommend anything you can get by Joyce Meyer because it will truly impact your life in a positive way! I was so excited to hear about this book because this is one area I have trouble with, especially when I wake up in the morning and it’s overcast or rainy or I’m exhausted–it’s hard to ignore and rise above the negative feelings that usually come along with those things. I have started reading this book and it’s amazing! I definitely want to learn how I can control the emotions that come and not let them ruin my day or dictate my attitude! I highly recommend this book! Who would have thought we actually have control over our emotions?! Also, I highly recommend her teaching called “The Power of Words: What You Say Can Make All the Difference.” This is extremely helpful as well!!

God is love. Crazy, relentless, all-powerful love. Have you ever wondered if we’re missing it? It’s crazy, if you think about it. The God of the universe–the Creator of nitrogen and pine needles, galaxies and E-minor–loves us with a radical, unconditional, self-sacrificing love. And what is our typical response? We go to church, sing songs, and try not to cuss. Whether you’ve verbalized it yet or not…we all know somethings wrong. Does something deep inside your heart long to break free from the status quo? Are you hungry for an authentic faith that addresses the problems of our world with tangible, even radical, solutions? God is calling you to a passionate love relationship with Himself. Because the answer to religious complacency isn’t working harder at a list of do’s and don’ts–it’s falling in love with God. And once you encounter His love, as Francis Chan describes it, you will never be the same. Because when you’re wildly in love with someone, it changes everything.

Editorial Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
Chan, senior pastor of Cornerstone Church in Simi Valley, Calif., offers a radical call for evangelicals to consider and emulate in this debut guide to living crazy for God. Chan’s own life compels him to live with urgency, and with good reason. His mother died giving birth to him, his stepmother died when he was nine, and his dad when he was 12. As a pastor, Chan says that conducting weekly funerals for people younger than himself has likewise sobered him to life’s unexpectedness and frailty. Chan writes with infectious exuberance, challenging Christians to take the Bible seriously. He describes at length the sorry state of lukewarm Christians who strive for a life characterized by control, safety and an absence of suffering. In stark contrast, the book offers real-life accounts of believers who have given all—time, money, health, even their lives—in obedience to Christ’s call.Chan also recounts his own attempts to live crazy by significantly downsizing his home and giving away his resources to the poor.Earnest Christians will find valuable take-home lessons from Chan’s excellent book. This review is from: Crazy Love: Overwhelmed by a Relentless God (Paperback)
There are many voices critiquing the North American church today. The voices come from both within and without; from those who love the church and those who hate it. We all know that there is something wrong. But what? In many cases the prescription is the same while the cure varies widely. In his new book Crazy Love, first-time author Francis Chan, pastor of Cornerstone Church in Simi Valley, California, regular speaker at Passion conferences and other events, and the guy who recorded that “Just Stop and Think” evangelistic video where he walks for miles holding a surfboard, takes his opportunity to challenge the church. “This book,” he says, “is written for those who want more Jesus. It is for those who are bored with what American Christianity offers. It is for those who don’t want to plateau, who would rather die before their convictions do.” It is a book that is meant to change the way Christians live their lives.

There are two ways of critiquing the church. We can critique out of love or out of disgust. Chan is committed to critiquing the church as an act of love. In a recent interview, when asked about the emergent church, he said this: “As a pastor I hear a lot of emergent leaders talk about what is wrong with the church. It comes across as someone who doesn’t love the church. I’m a pastor first and foremost, and I’m trying to offer a solution or a model of what church should look like. I’m going back to scripture and seeing what the church was in its simplest form and trying to recreate that in my own church. I’m not coming up with anything new. I’m calling people to go back to the way it was. I’m not bashing the church. I’m loving it.” And his love for the church is obvious throughout this book.

The format of Crazy Love is straightforward and effective. Chan dedicates three chapters to renewing our understanding of the character of God and seven chapters calling Christians to examine themselves. Within the book are two ongoing themes that are going to get people talking.

The first theme is that we must painstakingly examine ourselves. We cannot assume we are saved, or to use the biblical metaphor, we cannot assume that we are the good soil. Chan calls the reader to a serious self-inventory through a chapter that provides a profile of the lukewarm. He concludes, “a lukewarm Christian is an oxymoron; there’s no such thing. To put it plainly, churchgoers who are `lukewarm’ are not Christians. We will not see them in heaven.” God wants all or nothing.

The second theme is deeply counter-cultural, going against the stream of both Christian and secular culture. It is this: live your best life later. Chan wants to see Christians living differently–living in a way that is markedly different from those around them. He wants to see Christians forgoing much of what we consider necessary, what we consider our due, in order to focus on treasures that are eternal. He wants us to get outside the realm of what is comfortable to us and focus instead on radical obedience. “God doesn’t call us to be comfortable. He calls us to trust Him so completely that we are unafraid to put ourselves in situations where we will be in trouble if He doesn’t come through.”

These two themes and a focus on the Scriptures serve to create a powerful and deeply challenging book. There is a very obvious commitment here to teach Scriptural principles from the Scriptures and to invite the reader to verify what he is writing from those same Scriptures. Not surprisingly, the book’s weakest chapter is the one that depends least on the Bible. It is a chapter providing examples of men and women who have made radical choices to live radically different. At least a couple of examples are of people who are probably not the best examples overall because as they’ve jettisoned their old lives, they’ve also jettisoned too much good theology.

That small critique aside, I found that this is a paradigm-shaking book with a message that Christians desperately need to hear. Too many of us are living too safely and too easily. But for the brief moments we spend at church each week, we are practically indistinguishable from the unbelievers around us. This is not the way it is meant to be. The church could use a loving exhortation and Chan delivers well.

Joyce Meyer has a knack for coining phrases-her fans call them “Joyceisms”-and one of her best loved is “Where the mind goes, the man follows.” This was the basis for Battlefield of the Mind, and in her latest book, Meyer provides “power thoughts,” bringing the reader to a new level of ability to use the mind as a tool to achievement.
In POWER THOUGHTS, she outlines a flexible program to turn thoughts into habits, and habits into success. Sections include:

· The Power of a Positive You
· 5 Rules for Keeping Your Attitude at the Right Altitude
· More Power To You bulleted keys to successful thinking in each chapter
· The Power of Perspective

Nobody has more of a “can-do” attitude than Joyce Meyer. Now you can, too.

Editorial Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
Bestselling author and TV preacher Meyer takes a step beyond her bestseller Battlefield of the Mind. She offers a 12-step program to help readers conquer the negativity that naturally plagues the mind, leaving readers free to enjoy life and pursue their goals. Using themes from other books in her ample catalogue–worry, perseverance, managing emotions–Meyer breaks her suggestions into several digestible lists, backed by a “Power Pack” of Bible verses at the end of each chapter. She offers enthusiastic encouragement, but also requires action, here in the form of practice, discipline, and continual meditation on the 12 motivational thoughts. Critics of the positive thinking movement (Meyer obliquely acknowledges a debt to the pioneering Norman Vincent Peale) will continue to find downsides in this book, among them failure to sufficiently acknowledge the pain of suffering and an ignorance of intractable mental illness. Critics of Meyer will say she sounds like an infomercial (“You will see amazing results”). Yet her many fans will continue to appreciate her upbeat attitude and her ability to offer practical tips on the toughest topics.

Customer Reviews

This latest book by Joyce Meyer is her follow-up to her best-selling “Battlefield of the Mind”–the “next step”–which gives you “specific insights and strategies to help you build powerful mind-sets to empower you to live in a place of strength, success, and victory every day”. And it truly delivers. The author writes that the mind “can be a junkyard or a treasure chest” and in this book, she shows how. I would consider this not a book to be read over lightly, but a manual to be read once and then studied, digested, and most of all–practiced in daily life.

The book has two parts. The first part gives a general overview of why the mind is a battlefield, why we as Christians must take every thought captive, and how this is done. It has been years and years since “Battlefield of the Mind” came out (and thus years and years since I read it) but it seems to me that the first part would be an overview or refresher on what that book covered. Once you understand the basic principles involved, you are ready to go on to the second part. The second part is the meat of the book–a group of specific tools–12 beliefs that are vital in a Christian’s life in order to live in victory. Each belief is one chapter and at the end of the chapter there is a “Power Pack” of Scriptures that the belief is based on for you to memorize. I found the structure of the book really helpful in being able to use it on an ongoing basis.

I read the book last night and today, but am going to be working with it for far longer. I’m going to write the Scriptures down for memorization and (as the book suggests) focus each week for the next 12 weeks on one of the beliefs. The first one is “I can do whatever I need to do in life through Christ”. Another is, “I am difficult to offend.” The last is “I put God first in my life.” Now these may seem elementary and obvious, but it is surprising when you read the book and answer the thought questions interspersed throughout each chapter, how many of them we might forget in daily life. These questions are called “Think About It’ and help you apply each belief to your own life. For example, I identified that I don’t believe the best of other people; instead, I believe the worst so that I’m prepared no matter what happens, and then am pleasantly surprised if something better happens. This might work for me on some levels, but it isn’t Scriptural! (Or effective!)

The author is like a personal coach or “cheerleader in a book” who is endlessly upbeat, cheering you on as you read. If you are a newcomer to Christ, or to victorious Christian living, you will find much support in this book. On the other hand, if you are a mature Christian, long-time veteran of different Bible studies and programs, you won’t find new or unusual information here, but fresh encouragement and/or (as I did) a kick and a jump-start to help you get unstuck from the rut you may be in in your Christian walk. In practical terms, this books walks you through, step by step, everything you need to do to take every thought captive and to begin thinking thoughts that are based on Biblical truth and that lead to a joyful and abundant life.

This book is definitely for any Christian reader; it is interdenominational and doesn’t reflect a Pentecostal theology (as do some of the author’s books). This is information we can all agree on!

Highly recommended.

I was able to see a free viewing of this movie thru LifeWay ministries through our local church. AMAZING MOVIE!!! Just like with FLYWHEEL, FACING THE GIANTS and FIREPROOF these brothers have made a movie that can change peoples lives. This movie is about fathers and their role in the family. What would happen if fathers actually connected with their wives and kids……what a diffrence they would make! I would reccommend this movie to everyone!!!!Comes out in theatres september 30th, 2011.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fatherhood theme via a Christian Faith-based dramatic backdrop, September 30, 2011

(TOP 50 REVIEWER) This review is from: Courageous (DVD)
Expect in-your-face fatherhood morals bursting from an action/emotion story.
Expect the F-words: Faith, Fatherhood, Fears, Failings, Family, Forgiveness.
Expecting goodness, I entered the theater for the 1st opening day matinee. Found it great.
Sheriff Deputies know the necessity of partnership. They take it to heart by forming a small group of men, adding one ethnic carpenter outsider, and strive to make a difference in the lives of their families. They base their “Resolutions” vows upon the Bible. Unfortunately it takes some tragic circumstances to get the men to this point. Their courageous open faith position will not always be taken well…as Dep. Adam Mitchell (Alex Kendrick-Dir, Writer, Editor, Actor) states, “some will mock, some will have no resolve, others will say `I WILL’. Men of courage with God’s help.” He notes they will (and do) face conflict, challenge, controversy, & need courage. Each man has his own family issues, each an individual path of struggle.

A debate is sure to develop. Which is best, “Courageous” or “Fireproof” (2008); the last 2 films by the Kendrick brothers. I vote, equal. Alex does it all in this 4th Faith-based film adventure, while Stephen writes and produces. They also did “Flywheel” 2003; and “Facing the Giants” 2006. Is this film a moral and faith statement from the writers? YES! Of course! That’s what they and their church intend. Expect it, and perhaps be blessed.

This film begins immediately with ACTION, life-threatening, a crashing peak, and then an emotional end to the scene. Hold on to your hat, because you have almost 2 hours of emotion, action, and even some comedy ahead after that. Ken Bevel, as Hayes (Yes, from Fireproof) is new to this police squad. No big HOLLYWOOD stars in this low-budget film that relies on none of the typical theater gimmicks. This film, as in preceding Kendrick film successes, relies on spiritual subject matter, PG13 rating, and the targeting of the Christian Theater viewer, eager for BIGGER-FASTER-STRONGER, but also family and faith oriented. It’s worked for the Kendricks’ casts & crews in the past, it will work again. Expect “COURAGEOUS” in the theater for a few weeks, and then the DVD will be bought by those same viewers…and more.

Viewership will grow, word of mouth, father to father, mom to mom, pew to pew, family to family.

5.0 out of 5 stars I liked it a lot., September 22, 2011

This review is from: Know Your Bible: All 66 Books Explained (VALUE BOOKS) (Mass Market Paperback)
The Bible has over a thousand chapters which is a lot of information to digest. However this book will help you get a quick handle on what’s going on in each of its sixty-six books.

How is the book set up? Well, each of the sixty-six books of the Bible gets is explained in 1-2 pages. On these pages, the book follows an outline that covers seven items:

-the author
-the date when the book was written
-in ten words or less what each book’s key theme is
-details of the key events, people, and messages of that particular book (this is the longest section)
-several key verses from that particular book
-any unique and unusual facts in the book
-and an inspirational or devotional thought for each book

Know that this is a small and short book, but then again, that’s the whole point of it. It is meant to give you a nice, concise synopsis of each book of the Bible – and I felt like it succeeds nicely in doing just that. Other short books I really liked include The Prayer Project: How Each One of Us Can Make The World a Better Place to Live – In a Few Minutes a Day.
