Best-selling author Kathy Bostrom offers this book of devotions to help women create calm in the chaos of their busy lives. The book comprises twenty-eight days of devotions for each month of the year, so that readers can begin using the book during any month. Each week’s devotions, prayers, quotations, and “Spirit Boosters” focus on one Bible passage, which is read each day of that week. Each week ends with a “Sabbath Celebration,” a time for quiet prayer, reflection, and renewal. The “Spirit Boosters” for each week are divided into “Reaching In” and “Reaching Out” sections. They offer suggestions for ways to be kind to yourself and to others while nurturing your own faith. This book is ideal for women’s prayer groups, to give as a gift, or to give to yourself.

Editorial Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
“This is the equation of my life,” writes Bostrom: “One husband plus two jobs plus three children plus half a dozen projects all going on at once.” It’s no wonder that she feels exhausted, and she is not alone in such fatigue. How can women find spiritual refreshment in the midst of laundry, bills, school conferences and work? The Bible, says Bostrom, offers wisdom for finding “calm in the chaos” as early as the opening verse of Genesis, when God creates the earth from a formless void. Bostrom doesn’t want this devotional to add to the stress that women already feel, or become just another item on their never-ending to-do lists. To this end, it has a slightly different sensibility than other Christian devotionals: rather than incorporating the obligatory scripture du jour, Bostrom uses a single scripture for an entire week. This way, she says, readers can really delve into the passage and let its meaning wash over them for a substantial period of time. Also, she wants readers to engage in a weekly “Sabbath celebration,” to set Sunday apart as a true respite from the clamor of the week. She speaks openly from her own experiences of being busy and tired, noting that she suffers from a chronic illness that forces her to choose only those activities that are most meaningful. Literary readers will enjoy the well-chosen quotations from the likes of William Sloane Coffin, Madeleine L’Engle, Thomas Aquinas, Wendell Berry, Thomas Merton and Frederick Buechner.

From the Back Cover
“In this inspiring book of devotions, Kathy Bostrom becomes our daily companion and guide. Her delightful reflections are grounded in her very real life as a woman, a mother, and a minister. This book is a gentle and stress-free way to take moments of quiet reflection, even in the busiest of lives.” –Denise Roy, author of My Monastery Is a Minivan
“The reader will want this book for the collection of quotations alone, but Kathy Bostrom has given us much, much more. She has lived the pushing pulling chaos of life, and yet she has emerged with a voice of calm faithfulness. Her warm personal stories relating carefully chosen weekly scripture, poetry, prayer, quotation and Sabbath Celebration to the unrelenting everydayness of women’s lives is a reminder of God’s gifts: the incredible availability of God and a peacefulness that is ours for the taking, an inner God-blessed peacefulness. –Ann Weems, author of Kneeling in Bethlehem, Searching for Shalom, and Psalms of Lament

“Kathy Bostrom’s new book is a superb addition to the spiritual treasury of the church. Within a practical daily prayer discipline she provides a rich resource of readings – prayers, poetry and prose – drawn from the saints both ancient and modern, and also a series of personal meditations, rooted in daily life, which reach deep into the soul and the life of faith. I was enchanted, and found it hard to resist the temptation to read ahead.” –J. Barrie Shepherd, author of Diary of Daily Prayer

“Kathleen Bostrom sets forth her intent early–to help us “create calm in the chaos, not add to it” by simply giving us one more thing to do. She succeeds. This is not one of those trite devotionals that wraps everything up nicely with a bow on top and leaves you longing for something deeper, more lasting. I found myself eagerly strategizing a way to carve out my next few moments (I have four kids and a neurotic dog!) to sit with that day’s devotion and let Kathleen’s words soak into my soul like rain into thirsty soil. Kathleen offers a grace-filled practical plan that guides us through each week, creating space for God to cultivate His peace, His calm in our lives.” –Lisa Espinoza Johnson, speaker, recording artist, and author of Days of Whine and Noses–Pep Talks for Tuckered Out Moms

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful devotional book for women — and men! February 3, 2006
By Leah B. Wyckoff
Format:PaperbackKathy Bostrom has written a wonderful devotional book that encourages readers to reflect on and engage with scripture and prayer in their daily lives. One of the book’s strengths is that Bostrom has the reader reflect on one scripture in a variety of ways over the course of a week. New understandings and ideas may be revealed with each day’s reading of the scripture. At the end of each week is a Sabbath Celebration, a time to incorporate light, prayer, scripture and silence into one’s personal worship. I appreciate Kathy Bostrom’s writing, which illuminates the sacred in daily living and encourages the reader to enjoy the gift of daily devotional time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Christian Devotional November 9, 2006
By M. N. Miller
Format:PaperbackThis devotional is truly exceptional. It is written using a weekly format that makes it easy to use, with some variety in the components of the weekly devotions. There are personal anecdotes that are full of warmth and wisdom, scripture lessons, and much wisdom. I have loved this book so much that I’ve started giving it to friends as gifts. I highly recommend it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Prepare to have your faith challenged and life shaken! July 18, 1999
By A Customer
Format:HardcoverThis book is probably the most spirit filled and guided work I’ve read in a long time. You can not help but hear the voice of God calling you to a deeper relationship with Him as you read this amazing classic. From begining to end each page is an impassioned plea for the reader to abandon “comfortable Christianity” in order to truly know God as He desires to be known. You can see right away that truly Mr. Tozer wrote this book on his knees. I found myself challenged to look at my own faith in Christ and what I should be doing with that faith in every chapter. Sometimes with weeping and confessing and always compelled to deep times of prayer and renewel in God’s presence. The chapter entitled “The Blessedness of Possesing Nothing” should be required reading for anyone confessing Christ as their Lord. I was totally blown away and my life with Christ and my own pursuit of God has been forever enriched. I have read this book over and over and shared much of it with friends and family. If you are “stuck” in you walk with the Lord, let the Spirit of God use this book to shake you loose and move you onward and upward.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book Saturated with God’s Presence! December 15, 1999
By Cameron B. Clark VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified PurchaseThis is one of a few books I’ve read that, upon reading it, actually manifested God’s presence. In line with the teaching of the book, God impressed upon me his love and his desire for a more intimate relationship. I broke into tears. Few books have had that impact. The chapter entitled “The Blessedness of Possessing Nothing” is a profound call to absolute simplicity and abandonment to God who owns everything you may think you “possess”, including yourself! Surrender it all to God and see what miracles will be wrought for His glory. Let God possess you! For those who want other recommendations, try “The Christian’s Secret to a Happy Life” by Hannah Whitall Smith, “A Testament of Devotion” by Thomas Kelly, “Abandonment to Divine Providence” by Jean-Pierre de Caussade, “The Practice of the Presence of God” by Brother Lawrence and, for those who want to experience God’s holiness in a powerful way, “The Holiness of God” by R.C. Sproul. – Brad Clark
5.0 out of 5 stars The Pursuit of God – made easier to know and practice. April 1, 2011
By Mike
Format:Kindle EditionDidn’t realize that when they called this book a classic they really meant it. Many ideas and also clear direction to a more full walk with God (which, I think, is what we all really want). For the believer, God’s “distance” is never the issue. It is only that we are to tune in to Him and the reassurance of His already immediate presence is known and felt by us. The idea of God’s Throne in one’s life (and there is room only for One on the throne at any time) is simplified. Yes, we want to walk with God. But remember it is He who reaches out to us before we can know Him in the first place. No wonder this book is so highly regarded

Biography
Watchman Nee (1903-1972) is remembered for his leadership of an indigenous church movement in China, as well as for his books, which continue to enrich Christians throughout the world. Beginning in the 1930s, Nee helped establish local churches in China that were independent of foreign missionary organizations and were used to bring many into the Kingdom of God. From these roots sprang many of the house churches that continued to meet after Western missionaries were forced to leave the country during the Cultural Revolution. Arrested in 1952 and found guilty of a large number of false charges, Watchman Nee was imprisoned until his death in 1972.

And the Truth shall set you Free January 20, 2007
By The Publisher
Format:PaperbackThe most fascinating thing about this book is the writers interplay of the word “truth” and “reality” and the depth it reveals in familiar Christian terms and rituals such as Babtism, The Church,Worship, The Blood of Jesus, Humility, Prayer, Crucifixion and others. He makes the point that too many miss out on the spiritual realities behind them and convincingly outlines how to enter into that reality.

The sub-chapter “Supply and Reality” can be especially helpful in placing the individual christians role in the body of christ in the right perspective.

In the appendix was an amazing insight with examples from both the Old and New Testament into what he calls “obsession” which he defines as “what one thinks and does is totally wrong and yet one thinks that they are very right”.Some of the areas of obsession given are sickness, fear, speculations, other peoples words, imagined sin and many others. After explaining the causes, the writer goes on to explain how God’s light can provide the deliverance needed.

A devotional my kids ASK me to read each night February 3, 2009
By Sam & Julia’s mom
Format:HardcoverIf you want your children to connect their daily lives to Biblical principals in language your preschooler will understand, then this is the book for you. The author, a speaker and writer for MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) grabbed my son’s attention from the first sentence. The beauty of the short, but sweet devotions is that they are interactive. Simple questions get right to the heart of the day’s story and offer a chance for your child to share their feelings.

Here’s an example from December 27th’s devotional titled, “Win or Lose”

“Parker and Jack are having a snowball fight. Each boy hopes he will win! Do you like to win when you play games? Everyone likes to win. But when you play games, everyone loses now and then. Did you know there is something you can never lose? You can never loes God’s love. No matter who may be against you. God will always be on your side.”

Notice that this is a Winter story? I’ve found that the more relevant the situation the more my son get’s out of our devotional time. The day about “Working for Fun” caught his attention since he loves to bake cookies:

“Kaitlyn, Jack and Parker are making Christmas cookies. It will take a lot of work. But when the cookies are done, they will get a reward – they’ll have cookies to eat together! The Bible says that hard work often brings happy rewards. When the kids eat their cookies, do you think they will be happy they worked so hard?”

Seeds are being planted in my son and that makes me one happy Mama! But what about actual scripture verses, you ask? Not to worry! At the bottom of each page is a Bible verse and a prayer. The prayers rhymes, which I love. I have my son repeat every few words after me.

“Lord, when there’s work that needs to be done, help me remember that work can be fun. (December 18th’s Working for Fun devotional)”

Product Description
Just out of college and completely alone in the world, Maggie Montgomery has one shot left to save her life from an abyss of poverty and hopelessness. Clinging to the last shred of fuel and hope, she arrives at the mansion of Texas billionaire Conrad Ayers. Although Maggie is clearly not what Mr. Ayers and his wife have in mind for a nanny, they agree to hire her temporarily until they can find someone more appropriate to fill the position. However, Maggie’s whole world is about to be up-ended by two way-over-scheduled children and one incredibly handsome hired hand. As she struggles to fit into a world she was never made to fit in, Maggie wonders if she can ever learn to become a perfect version of herself so she can keep the job, or is she doomed to always be searching for a life she can never quite grasp?

Keith Ayers despises his life. As the son of Texas billionaire Conrad Ayers and the fiance to a Senator from Texas’ daughter, it looks great on the outside, but inside, he is dying. He would vastly prefer to manage and train his father’s racehorses. However, everyone else thinks that is beneath him. He needs to get into industry and build on his father’s success. Suffocating under the constrictions of his life, he meets Maggie who begins to teach him that wealth and power is not everything in this life. But can Keith defy the most powerful men in Texas to follow his heart?

An Unbelievable Intersection of Lives March 20, 2012
By Mary C. Findley
Format:Kindle EditionThis is the third contemporary romance I have read recently, and the second by a Christian writer. Normally I don’t read this genre because the stories tend to focus on the self-centered “sufferings” of a heroine who doesn’t have any real sufferings. I have been blessed, however, to find two out of three gems in the genre.
You know Maggie Montgomery has seen real trouble from the very beginning. But you also know she’s learned to “pray without ceasing” in the most down to earth sense. Don’t make the mistake of thinking this is “The Nanny” with tacked-on Christianity. This is no comedy. Grab your box of tissues and follow Maggie through her stunning discoveries and what people discover about her, themselves, and her God. Who becomes her only real friend? Someone who’s totally off-limits. Who does she teach to pray? Not just the sweet little four-year-old boy she cares for. Whose lives does she change? Almost the entire rest of the cast of the book.
I thought the scenes at church were a little strange. They never met a single church member. Didn’t even shake hands with the pastor or say his name. Some of the sermon illustrations were application rather than strictly correct interpretation, but the points made were easy to understand. The focus was on Maggie’s living faith, and that shined clear. Romantic tension seesaws through everything, but was a little repetitive in the way was portrayed sometimes.
The characters were well-rounded, even the secondary ones. Plenty of internal and external conflicts keep the reader going and guessing. It’s an excellent read with a resolution of so much more than just the impossible romance.

I Loved Deep in the Heart March 19, 2012
By Cindy
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified PurchaseWhat does forgiveness have to do with hurt, anger and scars from the past too ugly to be revealed? How can love wrap itself around grudges, secrets and the quest for monetary wealth until it’s the only thing that matters? Searching only for a job and a roof over her head, Maggie shows up at the door of the Ayers mansion alone, penniless and utterly dependent upon the mercy of the rich family too concerned about their own fortune to have compassion on such a thing as a human soul. How could they know that their lavish quest for worldly goods and social status is about to come crashing down around them at the selfless love and kindness of the lowly woman hired as their nanny?
Deep in the Heart is a gut-wrenching, tear-jerking story of forbidden yet undeniable romance between the one who has it all and the one who has nothing. And yet, which is which? Is it Keith, the handsome son of one of the richest men in Texas with racehorses to tend, a beautiful fiancée on his arm and a future of wealth and power at his fingertips? Or could it be Maggie, the girl with no money, no family, no home and yet possesses a heart of peace and fulfillment, brimming with love for others and for her God?
Once again, Staci reaches `deep in her heart’ to spill emotion onto the pages that pulls you into her story with a grasp that will not let go. Your heart will ache along with Maggie as she falls hopelessly in love with the man she can never have and along with Keith as he seeks to fill the void in his heart with things that can never satisfy. What twist of irony awaits Keith and Maggie that causes their pasts to collide with their futures in a way they never could have predicted?
Deep in the Heart is Staci Stallings at her finest. The memory of the anguish and joy poured out by her pen will remain in your heart long after the final page has been turned.
