Excellent Study – Every Christian Needs to See October 16, 2011
By C. Long
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified PurchaseOne of the best Christian t.v./movie type things I’ve ever seen! The spiritual value in this product is too high for me to even try and quantify. “Baby” Christians as well as mature ones will find value here. This can literally be a “life changing” product – and I don’t say that lightly at all. An EXCELLENT study either for church groups or individuals.

There are 6 episodes that are each 30 minutes long (give or take). The 6 episodes weave together a very interesting story that will draw you in immediately, and when you reach the end of 1 episode you will find yourself WANTING to see the next one to find out more.

Although the cost of this is expensive (at least $50 at this writing) and after ordering I wondered if I would regret it, I found it worth every penny and actually much more! However, from a practical perspective, it really bothers me that the creators would price it so high, as that fact alone, by necessity, will GREATLY limit the amount of ministry potential that this excellent product has. I don’t know if the creators/Kyle Idleman realize that or not, but they need to. This is a series that all Christians should watch. But at such high prices, many that otherwise might, won’t due to the price – which is a real shame given the vital importance of the message which it was developed to bring.

Note: There is a Not a Fan “movie”, which is much less expensive – I have watched it also and while it is OK (it is missing approximately half the footage), I do not believe it is nearly as effective as the study.

Although this is billed as a “small groups study” that was developed for churches – and I believe it would be excellent when used that way – it can just as easily be viewed independently at home (that’s what I did). In fact, it might even be more effective that way. Personally, I watched one a day and after watching each one, I mentally went through the included guide & exercise book, both of which ask some good questions and had some worthwhile exercises that I found truly helpful to help reinforce what I watched. In general they were an excellent companion to the DVD. With that said, I do have one warning: Personally I believe a few of the “crazier” exercises that are suggested in the companion book are not only not wise to do, but can open doors to the enemy that shouldn’t be opened. The exercises that say things like “this may seem awkward to do, but do it anyway”, I believe you should be very careful with doing them – please make sure you are very sensitive to the Lord on those things – our words and actions matter a lot (far more than we often realize) and although the intended goal of those exercises is good, some of them I believe can actually, albeit in ignorance, possibly open doors to the enemy. For instance, one of the wilder exercises suggests creating an altar to things you might be enslaved such as alcohol and trying to worship at that altar. The goal of the exercise is noble – it is to have you realize how silly it is to actually worship something like alcohol. But I personally believe such actions are unwise, even in such a context.

All in all, this is an EXCELLENT show/study with a message that couldn’t be more timely for the Church right now. Highly recommended!

Made to Crave is the missing link between a woman’s desire to be healthy and the spiritual empowerment necessary to make that happen. The reality is we were made to crave. Craving isn’t a bad thing. But we must realize God created us to crave more of him. Many of us have misplaced that craving by overindulging in physical pleasures instead of lasting spiritual satisfaction. If you are struggling with unhealthy eating habits, you can break the ‘I’ll start again Monday’ cycle, and start feeling good about yourself today. Learn to stop beating yourself up over the numbers on the scale. Discover that your weight loss struggle isn’t a curse but rather a blessing in the making, and replace justifications that lead to diet failure with empowering go-to scripts that lead to victory. You can reach your healthy weight goal — and grow closer to God in the process. This is not a how-to book. This is not the latest and greatest dieting plan. This book is the necessary companion for you to use alongside whatever healthy lifestyle plan you choose. This is a book and Bible study to help you find the ‘want to’ in making healthy lifestyle choices.

Subscription Term Name:1 yearFor a Saturday afternoon of light, but encouraging reading, buy a subscription to “Guideposts.” There are deeper magazines, bt don’t be fooled… every article here connects richly with the soul.

This is the kind of magazine both Catholics and Protestants can both love. It is great gift for your friend who attends the church across the street from yours.

Short vignettes and more involved profiles color this magazine in much the same way a Reader’s Digest might, except with a clear spiritual flavor.

It is ecumenical yet uncompromising: I fully recommend “Guideposts.” You won’t be disappointed.

A practical approach to creating wealth-based on the established principles of ancient Jewish wisdom-made accessible to people of all backgrounds

The ups and downs of the economy prove Rabbi Daniel Lapin’s famous principle that the more things change, the more we need to depend upon the things that never change. There’s no better source for both practical and spiritual financial wisdom than the time-tested knowledge found in the ancient Jewish faith and its culture. In the Second Edition of Thou Shall Prosper, Lapin offers a practical approach to creating wealth based on the established principles of ancient Jewish wisdom. This book details the ten permanent principles that never change, the ten commandments of making money if you will, and explores the economic and philosophic vision of business that has been part of Jewish culture for centuries. The book’s focus is on making accessible to individuals of all backgrounds, the timeless truths that Jews have used for centuries to excel in business.

Outlines ten fundamental “commandments” relating to business and money
Includes insights that will increase your potential for creating wealth, no matter what your faith or background may be
Blends contemporary business stories and Lapin’s own business experiences with the wisdom of the Torah and Talmudic prescriptions
This Second Edition provides new examples, especially of Internet related business opportunities. In addition, each chapter highlights specific action steps that can lead to wealth opportunities in both difficult economic times and periods of prosperity.

Editorial Reviews
From Publishers Weekly
Combining pop psychology, snippets of Jewish lore, homespun homilies and quotations from a daunting variety of sources, Lapin offers a manual on how to make money by succeeding in business. Lapin, a super-conservative Orthodox rabbi and talk show host, insists that everyone is in business “unless you are a Supreme Court judge [sic] or a tenured university professor.” (Excluding professors fits with Lapin’s devaluation of them, since he believes that higher education doesn’t prepare for “real life.”) The material is organized into 10 chapters of advice, beginning with the notion that “business is moral, noble and worthy,” and ending with the admonition not to retire. Throughout, Lapin urges behavior that will produce more business and, thus, more money. For example, he unabashedly recommends attending synagogue or church services in order to make business contacts. Similarly, he encourages giving charity to an organization that has members who “are in the best position to advance your business objectives.” Lapin justifies these dubious actions by interpreting the fifth commandment (“Honor thy father and thy mother”) as a mandate to form relationships for business purposes. His struggle to ground his financial advice in Jewish tradition is abandoned as he expounds an anti-environmentalist stance. He digresses still further from both Judaism and wealth-building when he gives tips for public speaking based on what his father taught him (talking without a manuscript or notes and not grasping the rostrum). Lapin’s book may appeal to patient readers who share his conservative political and economic views.

This review is from: Thou Shall Prosper: Ten Commandments for Making Money (Hardcover)
As a business owner in a service industry I have gained more from this book than almost any other personal finance or business management book that I have read. Unlike so many others, Rabbi Daniel Lapin does not offer any quick tricks or simple solutions. He describes a powerful process of self improvement and real change that I have found to be personally exhilarating as well as already profitable. I can see how my many financially successful Jewish friends seem to follow the rabbi’s prescriptions almost subconsciously. Now after seeing the business process through Rabbi Lapin’s eyes I find myself finding opportunity where I never saw it before. Through the practical steps that conclude each chapter I have been able to adjust my intuitive response to people and situations and this has allowed me to negotiate more effectively. The most amazing thing is how often during my first read of Thou Shall Prosper, I exclaimed “Wow! He’s right!” This stuff isn’t rocket science but it is often counterintuitive. I could have used some more diagrams and clarification of some of the more complex principles but with a few rereadings, it was fine. I recommend this book for its practical ability to make you really prosper whereas before you might just have been doing OK. He says that if you want to make different things happen to you it isn’t enough to do different things, you must actually become different. If you want to change, this book can help you do so. It is going to be my present of choice for many friends and relatives during this holiday season. You won’t regret having it in your business library.

The untold story of how John Ramsey survived unspeakable tragedy and learned to hope again.

Like the biblical Job, John Ramsey had it all-wealthy, social position, a loving family. And like Job, Ramsey was destined for great affliction, as many of the most precious things in his life were cruelly taken from him.

First came the death of his eldest daughter in a car accident in 1992. Then, four years later, his beloved six-year-old, JonBenét, was murdered; Ramsey was the one who discovered her body, concealed in the basement of his family’s home. The case drew international media attention, and-compounding Ramsey’s woe-suspicion unfairly focused on Ramsey and his wife, Patsy. Although they were ultimately cleared of any connection with the crime, Ramsey’s sorrows did not end. In 2006, Patsy died, at 49, of ovarian cancer.

In this remarkable book, Ramsey reveals how he was sustained by faith during the long period of spiritual darkness, and he offers hope and encouragement to others who suffer tragedy and injustice.

Editorial Reviews
Review
“Part memoir, part murder mystery and part diatribe, this book targets socially conservative Christians, but much of its content will undoubtedly engender sympathy in a broader audience. . . .As we read their account of the hellishness of their lives since their daughter’s murder, we realize that nothing about this situation has ever been fair and simply mourn that they had occasion to write this book at all.” (Publishers Weekly on The Death of Innocence )

This review is from: The Other Side of Suffering: The Father of JonBenet Ramsey Tells the Story of His Journey from Grief to Grace (Hardcover)
On Christmas night 1996, six-year-old JonBenét Ramsey was violently murdered in the basement of her Boulder, Colorado, home while the rest of her family slept upstairs in their beds. Her father, John Ramsey, was placed under an umbrella of suspicion as being her killer. Her mother, Patsy Ramsey, who was battling ovarian cancer at the time, was publicly placed under that same umbrella. The Other Side of Suffering is John Ramsey’s story of the tremendous suffering and heartache he has endured in his life. But this is not just the story of a singular horrific event, and it is not the story you’ve heard over and over from the news media. It is, in a story never before told, John Ramsey’s personal journey of suffering, courage, and faith.

Extremely well written and filled with emotion, this book contains many sad and incredible stories told to illustrate John Ramsey’s journey through suffering and faith. Although I initially approached reading this book with skepticism, I soon found myself reading through tear-filled blurry eyes. By the time I had finished reading, I had openly wept several times throughout the book.

This book was written as an encouragement to those who might otherwise abandon their faith in God in times of crisis and tragedy. The author elucidates the fact that life is not always fair, life is not always easy, but God is always good.

“People ask me how long it takes to get over the loss of a child. My response is, you never get over it.” ~John Ramsey

Book Description

T.D. Jakes, New York Times bestselling author of Reposition Yourself, Making Great Decisions, and more than a dozen other titles, now presents this book on forgiveness, demonstrating once again why he is called “a spiritual genius,” a “master of meeting mankind eye to eye,” and one of America’s best preachers.
He understands that he and fellow Christians share spiritual truths “that transcend time and culture and reflect a universal understanding of human nature.” The spiritual truth he explores in Let It Go concerns forgiveness and why it is important for those on the receiving end of wrongful behavior as well as those who commit acts of wrongdoing.

“Forgiveness is a big idea and it works best when it is invested into people who have the courage to grasp the seven-foot-high idea of what’s best for their future rather than the four-foot-high idea of recompense for what has happened in their past,” Jakes writes in Let It Go. This book explores forgiveness as an idea and at the same time offers specific and clear actions for readers who seek to apply the idea in their daily lives. Offenses are a part of life, he says. But conflicts can be resolved and relationships do have a future, if we learn how to forgive. No matter how great or small the injustice, Jakes shows how the matter can be put behind you for the sake of a better tomorrow if you can Let It Go.

Many books have been written on conservative politics. Many more have been written calling Christians to holiness and spiritual revival. Few, however, have managed to combine a clear explanation of the conservative political perspective with its corresponding personal and spiritual virtue.

In INDIVISIBLE, James Robison, the founder and president of LIFE Outreach International, partners with Jay Richards, Ph.D., a writer who has appeared in both the New York Times and The Washington Post. Together, they tackle tough, controversial political issues facing conservative Christians today, including abortion, stem cell research, education, economics, health care, the environment, judicial activism, marriage, and others. Written to appeal to a broad spectrum of believers, INDIVISIBLE not only argues political questions from a Scriptural standpoint, it also provides simple arguments that Christians can use to support their beliefs in public settings.

Most significantly, Robison and Richards recognize that the point of origin for spiritual and moral transformation is the individual. “We are convinced by historical precedent that long term cultural change requires not merely sound thinking and public good works but rather, God’s spiritual and moral transformation of us as individuals, which will then transform our churches, our communities, our culture, and ultimately our politics.”

James Robison is the founder and president of LIFE Outreach International, a worldwide Christian relief organization. He is also the host of LIFE Today, a daily syndicated television program that reaches 300 million homes in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Australia. He is the author of many books, including The Absolutes, True Prosperity, and Living in Love, and has spoken to millions of people through evangelistic crusades since entering public ministry in 1962.

Jay W. Richards, Ph.D., is a Senior Fellow at the Discovery Institute and the author of many books, including the award-winning Money, Greed, and God and The Privileged Planet. He is the executive director of the documentaries The Call of the Entrepreneur and The Birth of Freedom. He has been featured in the New York Times and the Washington Post and has appeared on Larry King Live. He has also lectured on economic myths to members of the U.S. Congress.

Editorial Reviews
Review
“INDIVISIBLE can change forever how you see the world. Grasp the wisdom shared in this book, and the scripture ‘My people perish for lack of knowledge’ will no longer apply. This can prove to be the much-needed game changer for America.” (Gov. Mike Huckabee )

“At the very least, every person of faith in America needs to read INDIVISIBLE. Whether the issue is the sanctity of human life, religious freedom, education, or economics, Robison and Richards provide biblical answers to often controversial issues. INDIVISIBLE is the kind of book that can alter the course of a nation if it is read and embraced by our nation’s citizens.” (Richard Land, President of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission )

“I read this book from cover to cover, in one sitting, in awe of what God was up to in these pages. INDIVISIBLE builds a sure bridge of faith and reason over which our country can walk, from our present state of confusion and peril into a new era of peace and prosperity. My friends James Robison and Jay Richards have given the Christian community–indeed, all of us–an invaluable tool for hope.” (Father Jonathan Morris, Fox News Analyst and Author of God Wants You Happy )

“James Robison and Jay Richards chop up and stir some of the most indigestible issues of our time-sex, money, race, gender, education, you name it-and then bite down on the hot and highly seasoned casserole with relish and realism. You’ll be talking to the chapters as you go along, cheering them on, and thinking about your Uncle Harry or an errant kid in college who needs to get INDIVISIBLE as a gift. I personally want to see it in the hands of those misguided politicos and media conservatives who think that social issues and economic issues can be separated. They can’t, and these irenic and ecumenical authors-an evangelical and a Catholic-make that case persuasively, concussively clear. Presidential candidates, take note.” (George Gilder, Co-founder of Discovery Institute
and Author of Wealth & Poverty and The Israel Test )

“INDIVISIBLE can be a turning point in the moral, cultural, and economic decline of the United States-if its readers make it so. The authors-a leading Evangelical and a prominent Catholic-fairly and thoroughly lay out the fundamental principles without which family, freedom, and prosperity will virtually disappear in this country. If men and women of good will, aware of the historic challenges we face, cannot unite behind these principles-indivisibly social, moral, and economic-and elect leaders who will implement them, future generations will only know of the greatness of this nation as the fading story of a lost treasure.” (Father Joseph Fessio, S.J., Founder and Editor, Ignatius Press )

“Biblical clarity is a great gift today in the midst of our country’s complex set of moral and social issues. In this book, Jay Richards and James Robison have given that gift to serious Christians who want to follow and serve Jesus Christ in America with wisdom, courage, and compassion.” (Dr. E. Andrew McQuitty, Pastor, Irving Bible Church )

“WOW! James Robison and Jay Richards’ book, INDIVISIBLE, makes a courageous stand for the foundation of America. This is a recipe for restoring our culture.” (Dave Stone, Senior Minister of Southeast Christian Church, Louisville, KY )

“James Robison and Jay Richards have presented to every believer and concerned citizen the issues that must be placed on the table of reason and as focal points for prayer. This is a must read and if these truths are embraced, both the church and nation will experience much needed restoration.” (Dr. Tony Evans, President, The Urban Alternative and Senior Pastor of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship, Dallas, Texas )

“A personal relationship with the Lord should affect every area of life, including the political. Politics can be confusing for many-even more so for Christians-as we struggle to make faith and political actions work together in a healthy way. Indivisible delivers concise, godly truth that will cut through the noise and help you develop a biblical perspective on political responsibilities.” (Robert Morris, Senior Pastor, Gateway Church, Southlake, Texas )

“James Robison and Jay Richards inspire us to find the necessary common ground to address our serious challenges. It is not a question of right vs. left, it is right vs. wrong. INDIVISIBLE provides the understanding that concerned people of faith need to help correct our nation’s perilous course.” (Dr. Jim Garlow, Pastor of Skyline Church, San Diego and Chairman of Renewing American Leadership, Washington, DC )

“People are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Knowledge is damaged if not destroyed when it is detached from reality. Reality is God’s perspective of life and how it is designed to function in His kingdom order. The book INDIVISIBLE contains knowledge, reality and life. For the classroom, living room, board room of corporations, or the war room of governmental decisions, James Robison and Jay Richards have addressed issues that must be faced. (Jim Hylton, Pastor of Skyline Fellowship, Fort Worth, Texas and author of The Supernatural Skyline )

“A powerful, well-informed, persuasive argument that the `social’ and `economic’issues ultimately will stand or fall together. James Robison and Jay Richards provide a fascinating analysis of all the major political issues today and show that conservative policies are both beneficial for the nation and consistent with Christian moral teachings.” (Wayne Grudem, Ph.D., Research Professor of Theology and Biblical Studies, Phoenix Seminary, Phoenix, Arizona )

“It is relatively easy to observe that our society is fast reaching a climactic moment. How to discern a wise, credible, effective and prudent course of action to avoid disaster is not so easy to come across. Jay Richards and James Robison make an important contribution in pointing the way to avoid the worst effects of a coming cultural and economic tsunami.” (Rev. Robert A. Sirico, President, Acton Institute )

“Everywhere I go, Christians have a sense of urgency concerning reclaiming the prophetic voice of the Church in the culture. INDIVISIBLE gives us a framework for understanding and advancing God’s agenda in our lifetime. As an African-American leader, I applaud the sensitivity and clarity with which James Robison and Jay Richards have addressed “biblical justice” issues. Their heart for the poor and the least among us is clear, and their biblical solutions are revolutionary. It’s time for the true `rainbow coalition’to come forth. This coalition is indivisible as it relates to believing God’s covenant. It is indivisible as it relates to unity in the body of Christ. Finally, it’s indivisible as it relates to walking our talk in the communities in which we live. As you peruse the pages of this excellent work, may you receive the inspiration to become an agent of His will in your own life, in your family, in your church and in our nation.” (Bishop Harry R. Jackson, Jr., Senior Pastor, Hope Christian Church, President, High, Impact Leadership Coalition, Presiding Bishop of the International Communion of Evangelical Churches )

“In a era when Washington’s reach continues to exceed its grasp, INDIVISIBLE defines the right role of government, explains why social and fiscal conservatives should embrace both the morality of markets and the efficiency of the markets-and why doing so requires no simple act of faith.” (Arthur Brooks, President, American Enterprise Institute )

“Rather than accept the common view that faith and politics are ever to be divided, James Robison and Jay Richards appeal convincingly to indivisible principles to show not only that our moral beliefs are compatible with a free market, but also that-now more than ever-religious believers and the advocates of economic freedom must work together to help get our country back on course.” (Matthew Spalding, Vice President of American Studies at The Heritage Foundation and author of We Still Hold These Truths: Rediscovering Our Principles, Reclaiming Our Future )

“Finally, someone has provided the road map for how America gets through the difficulties we are currently experiencing. With their book INDIVISIBLE, James Robison and Jay Richards review American history in great depth, as a prelude to outlining the process for recapturing American Exceptionalism. This book is a critical read for every concerned American and a blueprint for the Christian church. I am encouraged by the unity of effort between these two men of different theologies who put aside their differences in order to help save the nation. Great job, guys!” (LTG(R) Jerry Boykin, Former Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence and founding member of the US Army’s Delta Force )

“James Robison and Jay Richards remind us that good stewardship of freedom’s blessings means recognizing that the moral and economic foundations of American liberty are indeed, indivisible.” (Jennifer Marshall, Director, Domestic Policy Studies
The Heritage Foundation )

“For years I was a bystander concerning national issues. I felt it wasn’t necessary for me to get involved, especially since my husband is on the front lines. The Lord has shown me how important it is to know the issues so I can pray and stand up for what is right. INDIVISIBLE will equip you with what you need to know so you can present, discuss, and defend your beliefs effectively in these trying times. You, too, can make a difference!” (Betty Robison, Co-host, “LIFE Today” Television,
Fort Worth, Texas )

“James Robison and Jay Richards have given America a tremendous gift. INDIVISIBLE is a stunning synthesis and super clear explanation of the most important issues facing us today, full of wisdom and grace and truth. It should give all who read it real hope that God has not forsaken this nation and that there is indeed a way forward. I pray that book groups will study this book and use it to become part of the solution, so that America might again fulfill God’s call upon her, to be a beacon of hope and freedom for the world.” (Eric Metaxas, New York Times bestselling author of Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy and Amazing Grace: William Wilberforce and the Heroic Campaign to End Slavery )

“This is no grocery store romance novel. But it is full of love and truth–the twin sources of every great romance. So… ‘read and heed’… and step up to an active role in restoring America to her glorious roots–`with liberty and justice for all.'” (Stu Weber, pastor and author )

“We cannot have a strong national defense without a strong economy. We cannot have a strong economy without a healthy culture and vibrant, in-tact families. These assertions are demonstrable; a blizzard of research proves them. In their moving new book, INDIVISIBLE, James Robison and Jay Richards make a compelling case that Christians must continue working – with grace, humility, diligence and determination – to advance the sanctity of life, the dignity of marriage and the traditional family and the centrality of religious liberty to our nation.” (Tony Perkins, President, Family Research Council )

“I have read dozens of books on how to apply a Christian worldview to public policy, but INDIVISIBLE is by far the most clear, simple, and compelling book of its kind. I especially appreciate how James and Jay acknowledge thearguments against their position and respond in a reasonable fashion. You may disagree with what they say, but you’ll have to admit that they’ve been agreeable in the way they said it. INDIVISIBLE not only sound a clear note, it does so in a way that brings civility to anoften uncivil arena.” (Jeff Myers, Ph.D., President of Summit Ministries )

This review is from: Indivisible: Restoring Faith, Family, and Freedom Before It’s Too Late (Hardcover)
This book is a thorough survey of what has become the greatest debate of our time–the role of the government in our lives and the prospect for personal freedom. This is unabashedly a Christian conservative book. As such, it will be disregarded off hand by anyone who leans away from the religious right. But that would be a terrible mistake. Like another awesome book on the modern political system, Juggernaut: Why the System Crushes the Only People Who Can Save It, this book delves into some of the most fascinating paradoxes of the modern world and shows just how twisted it has become. It is an argument that everyone can appreciate, no matter what his political stripe is.

The insight begins with the title. What exactly is indivisible anyway? The authors bring up the fact that freedom cannot be divided between fiscal and social issues. If you want freedom, you must strive for freedom in both. This is where the interesting part comes in. When the authors say that one must strive for freedom, they are not saying that one must be able to do whatever they want to do. As they put it, freedom is “getting to do what you don’t want to do, not to do what you want to do.” And by taking this frame, the authors make the claim that, in order to defend freedom, you not only have to prevent government intrusion on the fiscal and economic plane, but also on the social plane.

To be sure, the authors oppose government intervention in fiscal areas, but they also oppose government intrusion in the social realm as well. What is interesting is that they don’t take this to mean that we should legalize everything from abortion to gay marriage. To the authors, defending freedom in the social realm is to in fact defend laws against things like abortion and gay marriage.

This might seem a little counter-intuitive at first glance. This is how the logic works: The authors bring up an important point: In the beginning of the country, religious freedom was seen as important so that no state government could impose its brand of religion on its citizens. Now the situation has flipped. No longer is there a need to prevent state governments from imposing its religion, it is necessary to prevent state governments from imposing its atheism on its subjects. It used to be that free thinkers were the main beneficiaries of religious freedom; now the truly religious are the only ones who can benefit. Ultimately, the moral of the story is the same: the only way that people can exist side-by-side together in a complex society is if they are able to practice their religion freely without encumbrance from the government. If you have this foundation, you have a thriving people, determined to produce for themselves and capable of conducting the trade essential for productivity and growth. Without this foundation, you have a calumnious people, determined to fight each other until their way of life is protected.

Government is supposed to be non-religious, that is true. But it is also supposed to be limited. When government expands the way it has in the last several decades, its non-religious foundation means that there are atheistic standards infiltrating our day-to-day activities. Sure, we can be religious outside of our affiliations with government, but, increasingly, it is becoming harder to do anything outside of government’s purview.

An excellent read for anyone interested in the big battle going on these days.

What is Jesus worth to you?

It’s easy for American Christians to forget how Jesus said his followers would actually live, what their new lifestyle would actually look like. They would, he said, leave behind security, money, convenience, even family for him. They would abandon everything for the gospel. They would take up their crosses daily…

But who do you know who lives like that? Do you?

In Radical, David Platt challenges you to consider with an open heart how we have manipulated the gospel to fit our cultural preferences. He shows what Jesus actually said about being his disciple–then invites you to believe and obey what you have heard. And he tells the dramatic story of what is happening as a “successful” suburban church decides to get serious about the gospel according to Jesus.

Finally, he urges you to join in The Radical Experiment–a one-year journey in authentic discipleship that will transform how you live in a world that desperately needs the Good News Jesus came to bring.

Responses to Radical

“In his compelling new book, Radical, David Platt delivers a powerful picture of the church in America today that, on key points, stands in sharp contrast to what the Bible shows us about the person and purpose of Jesus Christ. David challenges Christians to wake up, trade in false values rooted in the American dream, and embrace the notion that each of us is blessed by God for a global purpose—to make Christ’s glory known to all the nations! This is a must-read for every believer!”
—Wess Stafford, president and CEO, Compassion Intl.

“We have moved into a generation of young leaders who have a passion to surrender the American dream if necessary in order to embrace fully, compassionately, and wholeheartedly a bigger dream—the Great Commission. I have never been challenged by an author more than I have by David Platt. Read Radical, be blessed, and be changed.”
—Johnny Hunt, president, Southern Baptist Convention, and pastor, First Baptist Church of Woodstock

“Radical will cause you to bounce on a spectrum between two words: ouch and amen. Tough truths do that. They challenge us to examine our lives and then choose the lasting over the temporary. Read Radical if you’re ready to live differently.”
—Gregg Matte, senior pastor, First Baptist Church of Houston

“David Platt’s book will leave anyone who sincerely engages with his challenge dissatisfied—and faced with a decision: What will authentic faith look like in my life? This book has the potential to revitalize churches today to practice a radical, biblical lifestyle that can transform society and reach a lost world.”
—Jerry Rankin, president, International Mission Board, Southern Baptist Convention

“The church of the Lord Jesus has been seduced by a skilled seductress: the American dream. David Platt exposes this enemy of authentic Christianity and provides a way of escape through a radical faith that leads to a radical obedience. I am not the same after reading it. I trust that will also be true for you.”
—Daniel L. Akin, president, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary

“It is almost impossible to keep the idols of our own culture from influencing us, whether we want it to happen or not. This is certainly true when it comes to the so-called American dream. We need our eyes opened! We need to be called out! In this challenging and thoughtful book, David Platt shows us the way to live for Someone and something bigger.”
—Darrin Patrick, founding pastor, The Journey, St. Louis

“Sometimes people will commend a book by saying, ‘You won’t want to put it down.’ I can’t say that about this book. You’ll want to put it down, many times. If you’re like me, as you read David Platt’s Radical, you’ll find yourself uncomfortably targeted by the Holy Spirit. You’ll see just how acclimated you are to the American dream. But you’ll find here another Way, one you know to be true, because you’ve heard it before in the words of the Lord Jesus, perhaps most forcefully in the simple call ‘Follow me.’”
—Russell D. Moore, dean, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

“Through solid examination of the Scriptures and compelling testimonies from believers enduring persecution, my friend David Platt pulls back the curtain on subtle dangers weakening the church in our Western culture. Radical is the urgent call we need to care more about the spiritually lost and physically impoverished people of the world.”
—Ed Stetzer, president, LifeWay Research

Customer Reviews:
This review is from: Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream (Paperback)
In Radical, David Platt looks at how Christianity in America has become far too comfortable. He suggests that Americans have become more interested in pursuing the “American dream” than in fulfilling their obligations to Christ. Platt mentions that many Christians will go so far as to twist the Word of God to mean what they desire it to mean. With this in mind, Platt challenges the reader to a year-long journey to make radical changes for the cause of Christ.

Radical is the no-excuse, no-holds-barred work of a pastor who is fed up with what Christianity has become in America. In his passionate way, David Platt shares his burden about a Christian religion that has strayed far from what it is supposed to be. His book teaches and convicts readers. His goal is to help Christians see what they’re missing out on by holding back in their faith.

The book contains stories that will make you weep, as well as those that will shock you. It gives the readers a bold look at where Christians are failing in today’s society and how to bring about a positive change. Platt speaks with no apologies, and his message will undoubtedly raise some eyebrows, especially among the “religious” crowd. However, I found his radical statements to be true and straight down the line of what the Bible teaches.

Say “goodbye” to watered-down theology and “feel good” messages. While Platt’s message may not be popular, I believe it is God-sent.

This review is from: Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream (Paperback)
Radical, David Platt’s new book (his first) is a challenge to the American church to take back our faith from the “American Dream.” Platt, the pastor of four-thousand member The Church of Brook Hills in Birmingham, Alabama, pulls no punches, and somehow manages to disturb without offending.

In nine short and very readable chapters, he makes the case for a radical Christian faith–which SHOULD be the norm. He shows the shameful poverty of our faith amid the affluence of our lifestyles. He advocates a Great Commission mindset far beyond the tidy routines of our comfortable Christianity. He says, for example,

If Jesus is who he said he is, and if his promises are as rewarding as the Bible claims they are, then we may discover that satisfaction in our lives and success in the church are not found in what our culture deems most important but in radical abandonment to Jesus.

If people are dying and going to hell without ever even knowing there is a gospel, then we clearly have no time to waste our lives on an American dream.

Why would we ever want to settle for Christianity according to our ability or settle for church according to our resources?

After eight compelling chapters filled with writing like the above, Radical concludes with The Radical Experiment, a clarion call to “One year to a life lived upside down,” in which the reader is urged to commit to:

Pray for the entire world
Read through the entire Word
Sacrifice your money for a specific purpose
Spend your time in another context
Commit your life to multiplying community

One might expect those challenges to seem like asking too much, particularly in light of some examples he gives. On the contrary, however, it is far more likely that the reader will be champing at the bit to rise to the challenge and respond to the call. In other words, ready to be radical.

By Jennifer “A Pampering Chef” (Old Hickory, TN) –   Wow #1s (Audio CD)
I love this CD! It has such a variety of songs, all awesome. As soon as I found I had to have it. As much as I love Amazon, I just couldn’t wait. The titles of the songs are listed for you, so I won’t add them. These are uplifting and outreaching songs. So spiritual! You feel like you are right there. The amount of songs for such a low price is outstanding also. I feel so bad for not leaving an outstanding and helpful review, I just can’t think of anything better to say than to “go buy it, you will love it!”
